"You really think that I'm a foolish jerk who doesn't care about my grandfather's company, right?" He said while playing the ballpen in his hand with his feet resting on the table.
"Mr. Forger, let me remind you that this is my playground and I will not let you do what you want to destroy this company."
The man in front of him was shaking. He was guilty of what he did and did not expect that he would be caught for the thing he did weeks ago, but it was not his intention, he was just really desperate that time.
"You're a good friend of my grandfather, Mr. Forger, in fact, he treated you like one of his sons and you're one of his most trusted employees. People nowadays can't be trusted. I didn't expect that the person he trusted the most would betray him." He said as he walked towards the glass window.
"You know that I can put you in jail with just a flick of my finger, right? The thing you did is not a little thing that I can forgive Mr. Forger but as you can see--"
"I know I made a big mistake and I am begging you.. My family depends on me. I would do anything you want me to do. Just please don't send me to jail. My wife is sick and I need money and I have no choice but to do that--"
"But I don't do charity work, Mr. Forger, if you're trying to get my sympathy, sorry to disappoint you, but I am not like my grandfather."
"I'm begging you.." He pleaded and kneeled in front of him when, suddenly, the door of Mr. Forger's office opened. Both women are a bit shocked by what they saw, but one of them is the most surprised. Her eyes grew wide seeing the old man kneeling in front of the young man.
"Miss, I told you to not go inside. I'm sorry sir, but she insisted on going inside."
"Let her be." He said, still wearing his usual cold aura.
Mr. Forger's secretary immediately left and closed the door behind them.
"Mind introducing yourself, lady?"
Instead of answering his question, the lady's attention stuck to the old man kneeling on the floor. She doesn't have an idea about what's happening, but she's hurt seeing her dad looking so helpless in front of other people, in front of her.
"Dad, what are you doing? Why are you--"
The man cut her off and gave her a forced smile.
"You shouldn't be here. I promise you that everything will be okay. Go home now and back to your mom. I'm sure she'll look for you.."
"You never told me that you have a gorgeous daughter, Mr. Forger."
"Who are you and why are you doing this to my dad?" She asked with a dagger look, yet for him she looked like a little kitten ready to scratch you with her paws.
"Sweetie, this is just between me and him. Don't involve yourself here. Go home now and look after your mom and you have a class tomorrow, right?" The old man said, trying to lighten up the mood because he knew that at any moment his precious daughter would shed a bucket of tears.
"No. I will not leave without you, so let's go home now dad." She said and pulled the old man up but the latter resisted. He's still kneeling in front of him and, because of too much frustration, she yelled at the young man who's responsible for her father's actions.
"WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM HUH?! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO HIM?!"
"I didn't ask him to kneel, he did it by himself and why don't you ask your dad, huh?"
"Dad--"
"Don't be hard-headed, Anya!"
"But I need to know! Don't keep the problem to yourself.." She said and now her tears are starting to fall down on her cheeks.
"I know we are having a tough time because of mom, but she's okay now, right? Can't you do the same? Be okay with her because she's also worried about you.."
"But I'm okay.." He said, trying to force a smile as he wiped the tears from his daughter's cheek.
"I just have to do something.."
"Then let me help you--"
"Okay, enough of the drama, as you can see here, miss, your father Mr. Forger was caught stealing in my grandfather's company.." He said and looked at the old man who was now looking down. "And his case. It's not easy. I could put him in jail any moment now, but then I can't because surely my grandfather will die of a heart attack knowing that his most trusted employee fooled him."
Caleb's grandfather trusted Mr. Forger so much that he even treated him like his very own son. He trusted to him all the finances of the company and he didn't know why Mr. Forger fooled him.
"Now tell me, how should I punish your father?"
"He can't do that.. Dad, tell him you can't do that.." She looked at her father and she was hurt when she saw her dad crying.
"Dad.."
"I am sorry.. That's the only choice I have so that we can continue to support your mom's treatment. That's the only thing I could think of..
Anya's tears were flowing down her cheek and she gave her selfless father a tight hug. She helped her dad to stand up and gave him her sweetest smile despite the tears that were continuously flowing from her eyes.
"Don't you know that we're lucky because we have you? And saying thank you is not enough.. Even though we're not your true child, you still love us like your very own. Thank you dad for everything and now let me take it from here." She said and slowly pushed the old man out of the room.
"Let me talk to him, dad, and use my charm for him. Maybe he'll forgive you." She said playfully and gave her father a pinch on the cheek. "Now let me say that everything will be alright.."
Her father wanted to protest but she was already inside the room and locked the door.
She took a deep breath before facing the young man. She needs to be brave for her family, especially for her mom who's still fighting her illness. Without hesitation, she kneeled in front of him and pleaded on her father's behalf.
"I know kneeling in front of you won't be enough, but please, I'm begging you don't send my dad to jail.."
"If saying sorry for every mistake you make will be enough, people won't learn their lesson and will still do it again. That's the reason why punishment is being implemented."
"I'll do whatever you want, just forgive my dad. If you want, I'll work for you for free." She said.
She didn't expect that the man in front of her would pick her up. His gaze is cold as ice.
"I don't need another personal assistant lady." He said in his deep voice before leaning closer to her for a whisper. "What I want is a woman who can provide for my needs." He said seductively before pulling away from her.
He took a pen and a piece of paper and wrote something on it and after a moment he handed it to a confused woman who was still not recovering from what he had said earlier.
"You decide, but don't keep me waiting. Hope to see you again little squirrel."
Anya was left dumbfounded and froze in her tracks. She didn't expect this to happen. She also didn't notice that her father was now inside the room.
"Sweetie, tell me, did he do something to you?"
"Huh? Uh no, nothing dad. Don't worry, he agreed that I'd work for him to pay the money. It will take time, but it's okay. I'll do it for our family." She said and gave her father a reassuring smile.
"I am the one who should do that, not you. I feel sorry that I can't give you a good life--"
"Dad, you didn't just give us a good life. You gave us a home, a complete and happy family. We are contented with what we have and please let me help you--"
"But you're too young. You are supposed to enjoy life with your friends and not think about how you would help me and you're still studying--"
"You worry too much dad! Don't you forget that I am Anya Forger, the toughest yet the most hard-headed daughter of yours. Thank you for everything, dad, I know we will make it through." She said and kissed her father on the forehead.
