Chapter Eight – The Weight of Restraint

1361 Words
Ryker pov I had hosted six Alpha Summits. I'd negotiated border disputes. Stopped duels before they began. Faced rogue wolves twice my size. Buried my father. Taken the Alpha's oath before I was ready. None of it compared to lying awake because of one woman. I stared at the timber ceiling of my chambers, willing my mind to quiet. It refused. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her. Not the whispered legend. Not the undefeated Alpha. Carley. The way she'd laughed at something Rowan had whispered during dinner. The gentle way she'd thanked every servant who approached her. The way she'd carried herself with confidence, never arrogance. The small smile she'd given me across the table. I groaned quietly and rubbed a hand over my face. "This is ridiculous." "No." Onyx's deep voice filled the silence. "This is fate." --- I swung my legs over the side of the bed and crossed to the open balcony. The mountain air hit my face immediately. Normally it cleared my head. Tonight... Nothing helped. Blackwood Keep slept beneath me. Torches burned steadily along the walls. Guards patrolled the battlements. Somewhere below, a wolf howled into the darkness. Everything was exactly as it should be. Except me. "You're pacing again." "I am standing." "You've walked the length of this balcony twelve times." "...Have I?" "Yes." I sighed. "I've never felt like this." "I know." "I don't even know her." "Your heart disagrees." --- The words settled heavily between us. I didn't know her. Not really. I knew stories. Rumours. Whispers. But the woman I'd met tonight... She wasn't any of those things. I'd watched her speak to servants with genuine warmth. I'd seen her make nervous guests smile with effortless humour. When Iron Crest had tried to provoke her, she'd answered with calm wit instead of anger. She hadn't needed to prove she was strong. Everyone else had done that for her. There was something quietly confident about her. As though she had nothing to hide... Yet carried the weight of the world anyway. "You admire her." "...Yes." "More than admire." I didn't answer. Because I wasn't ready to. --- The law. It kept circling back to the law. Every Blackwood Alpha before me had honoured it. Every one. The Rite of the Twenty-First Winter wasn't just tradition. It was a promise. A promise that an Alpha would put their people before their own heart until they had the wisdom to lead both. I'd believed in that promise my entire life. I still did. So why did it suddenly feel... Cruel? "Because you've finally met the one person capable of testing it." "I won't break it." "I know." "I can't." "I know." His voice softened. "That doesn't make this any easier." --- A quiet knock came at my chamber door. "Come." Elias stepped inside carrying two mugs. "I figured you'd still be awake." "Am I that predictable?" "You've worn a path into your carpet." I looked down. "...Apparently." He handed me one mug. "This is tea." I raised an eyebrow. "Actually tea?" "I learned from Rowan's mistakes years ago." I laughed. "You've met Rowan?" "Once." "And?" "I've never trusted anyone who smiles that much." "He smiles because he's planning something." "Exactly." --- Elias leaned against the stone wall. "You've got that look." "What look?" "The one your father used to get." I frowned. "I've never seen that look." "No." A small smile crossed his face. "Because he wore it when he thought nobody was watching." "What does it mean?" He studied me for a moment. "It means something important has happened." I looked away toward the mountains. "It has." He didn't push. That was why he'd been my Beta for so long. Sometimes silence showed more loyalty than questions ever could. --- Eventually he spoke again. "I met Alpha Ashen briefly." "What did you think?" "I think the stories have wasted everyone's time." I found myself smiling. "I thought the same." "She's..." He searched for the word. "...kind." I nodded slowly. "She is." "And dangerous." "Also true." "The dangerous part isn't what everyone thinks." "No." "It's that she makes people feel comfortable." That observation caught me off guard. He was right. True power wasn't always intimidating. Sometimes... It invited trust. --- Sleep finally claimed me sometime after midnight. Not because my thoughts settled. Because exhaustion eventually won the argument. --- The next morning began before sunrise. Training usually cleared my head. Today... It only reminded me how distracted I was. My sword felt heavier. My timing was slightly off. Nothing anyone else would notice. I noticed. Onyx certainly did. "Again." I reset my stance. Steel clashed against the training post. "Again." Another strike. "You're forcing it." "I know." "Your body is here." "My mind isn't." "Correct." --- By the time the first rays of sunlight reached the courtyard, several warriors had gathered to train. None of them realised I was fighting two battles. One with the blade in my hand. The other with the pull inside my chest. Every instinct urged me toward the eastern guest wing. Toward her. To simply... Talk. Nothing more. Just hear her laugh again. Learn who she really was beneath the title. Instead... I remained exactly where I belonged. Leading my pack. Because no matter what my heart wanted... Blackwood came first. It always had. It always would. Or at least... That's what I kept telling myself. Yet as I lowered my sword and looked toward the eastern towers where Ashen Moon's banners fluttered in the morning breeze... I realised something that made my heart beat just a little faster. For the first time in my life... Duty and destiny no longer seemed to be walking the same path. And I had no idea which one would ask the greater sacrifice. By the time I returned from the training yard, Blackwood Keep was fully awake. Servants hurried through the corridors carrying breakfast trays, council documents and fresh flowers for the meeting hall. Guards changed shifts with practiced precision, and guests wandered the castle, greeting one another with polite smiles. The summit had officially begun. There was no room for distraction. Or so I kept telling myself. As I walked through the main corridor, everyone I passed greeted me warmly. "Morning, Alpha." "Good morning." "The kitchens are ready for the council luncheon." "Excellent. Thank you." A stable hand stopped to tell me one of the visiting horses had thrown a shoe. I arranged for the blacksmith. A steward informed me two Alphas had requested a private meeting after the morning council. I found them a room. Problem after problem. Decision after decision. It was familiar. Comfortable. For a little while, I almost forgot about the ache in my chest. Almost. "You're looking for her." I smiled to myself. "I am walking to the council chamber." "Past the eastern guest wing." "...Coincidence." "Liar." Before I could argue, movement caught my eye. Carley. She stepped into the corridor with Rowan beside her, laughing softly at something he'd said. She looked... lighter than she had the night before. Relaxed. For a heartbeat, everything else faded. She looked up. Our eyes met. A warm smile spread across her face. Natural. Unforced. Without thinking, I smiled back. It lasted only a second before guests crossed between us, each of us continuing in opposite directions. No words. No introductions. Just a shared moment. Yet somehow... It settled something inside me. "Mate," Onyx said proudly. "I know." "She's smiling." "I noticed." "You're smiling too." "...Apparently." Onyx's quiet chuckle echoed in my mind. "This is going to be an interesting summit." As I reached the council chamber doors, I drew a slow breath and straightened my jacket. Whatever was happening between Carley and me would have to wait. The Alpha Summit came first. The kingdom came first. Still... As the doors opened and I stepped inside to welcome the gathered leaders, I couldn't shake the feeling that the biggest challenge of the summit wouldn't come from politics. It would come from sitting across the council table from the one woman I already wanted to know better... while pretending she didn't occupy every spare corner of my thoughts.
