Chapter One – The Alpha They Feared
The mountain road twisted through towering pines, disappearing into a fortress carved from black stone. Blackwood Keep. For over four hundred years, every ruling Alpha had crossed its gates once each year to attend the Alpha Summit. Treaties were forged there. Wars were prevented there. Sometimes... Wars began there. Alpha Carley Ashen tightened the reins of her mare as the fortress came into view. The banners of more than thirty packs fluttered from the battlements, each carrying its own colours, crests and history. Wolves patrolled the walls in disciplined formation while guards in dark leather armour stood shoulder to shoulder outside the massive timber gates. She had been here before. It never became easier. "They're already watching," Fenrir murmured. "I know." "They're expecting a monster." Carley smiled faintly. "They always are." Her silver hair had been braided tightly that morning, woven with a single strip of black leather bearing the crest of Ashen Moon. She wore practical travelling leathers beneath a deep forest-green cloak, refusing the elaborate gowns many Alpha families favoured during council gatherings. She had never cared for appearances. Her pack respected strength. Kindness. Honesty. Not expensive jewels. As she guided her horse toward the gates, conversations around the courtyard slowed. Then stopped. One by one, heads turned. The whispers began almost immediately. "That's her." "I thought she'd be taller." "She's... different." "I heard she killed twelve Alphas." "No, twenty." "They say Death itself walks beside her." Carley kept her eyes forward. Years ago, those whispers had hurt. Now... They simply reminded her why she fought so hard to protect the people waiting for her back home. The guards bowed respectfully as she reached the entrance. "Welcome to Blackwood Keep, Alpha Carley." She dipped her head. "My thanks." One of the younger guards couldn't hide his curiosity. "It's an honour to finally meet you." An older guard nudged him sharply. The young man immediately straightened. Carley pretended not to notice. Instead, she smiled. "Thank you." The young guard looked almost startled that she'd answered. "You confuse them," Fenrir chuckled. "I don't mean to." "Kindness often confuses people more than violence." She couldn't argue with that. --- The courtyard bustled with warriors unloading horses, servants carrying crates of supplies and visiting Alphas greeting one another. Some offered respectful nods. Others deliberately turned away. Several openly glared. Carley acknowledged every one of them with the same calm nod. Respect cost nothing. A familiar voice called her name. "Carley!" She turned just as a large, bearded Alpha strode across the courtyard. Alpha Garrick. Leader of the Stone Ridge Pack. His booming laugh echoed between the castle walls as he wrapped her in a crushing embrace. "I was beginning to think you'd skipped this year's politics." "I considered it." "I would have." She laughed. "I know you would." Several nearby Alphas stared openly. One whispered, "He's... hugging her?" Garrick stepped back with a grin. "They still think you're terrifying." "I've noticed." "You should smile more." "I smile all the time." "Not at them." "They'd probably faint." That earned another laugh. Garrick lowered his voice. "Be careful this year." "I always am." "No." His smile faded. "This year's different." Carley studied him carefully. "What have you heard?" "Too many questions about Ashen Moon." Questions. Never accusations. Never proof. Just questions. Questions that always circled back to the same impossible secret. Fenrir. She nodded once. "I'll manage." "I know you will." Before leaving, Garrick squeezed her shoulder. "If anyone gives you trouble..." She smiled warmly. "I appreciate it." "...I'll happily throw them through a wall." "There it is." "What?" "The diplomacy you're famous for." He barked another laugh before disappearing into the crowd. --- Carley handed her mare's reins to a stable hand. "Take your time with her," she said softly. "She doesn't like loud noises." The stable boy blinked. "Yes, Alpha." "And there's dried apple in the saddlebag." His face lit up. "For... me?" "For her." He laughed sheepishly. "I'll make sure she gets every piece." "Thank you." As she walked away, she missed the stable boy quietly telling another worker... "She's nothing like they said." --- Inside the keep, polished stone corridors stretched beneath vaulted ceilings lined with banners from every pack represented at the summit. Paintings of former Blackwood Alphas watched from the walls. Generations of leaders. Victories. Sacrifices. History. Servants hurried past carrying fresh flowers, polished silver trays and stacks of council documents. Nearly every one paused to bow. Carley acknowledged each with a smile or quiet greeting. A maid carrying an armful of folded blankets stumbled as another servant hurried around the corner. The blankets spilled across the floor. Before anyone else reacted, Carley was already kneeling to help gather them. "Oh!" The young maid's cheeks turned crimson. "Alpha, please—you don't have to—" "It's alright." Together they stacked the blankets again. "There." The maid stared at her. "Thank you." "You're welcome." As Carley continued down the hallway, she became aware of several warriors watching the interaction. Confused. Almost suspicious. "You're ruining your reputation," Fenrir teased. "I worked so hard to become terrifying." "Perhaps growl more." "I'll consider it." --- Elsewhere in the keep... Another Alpha stood before a tall window overlooking the courtyard. Ryker Blackwood folded his arms as another group of visiting wolves arrived below. The summit had officially begun. His Beta stepped beside him. "Most of the southern packs have arrived." Ryker nodded. "And Ashen Moon?" The Beta looked down into the courtyard. "She arrived a few minutes ago." Ryker's gaze instinctively searched the gathering below. He found her almost immediately. She was speaking with a servant near the stables. The servant smiled. She smiled back. It wasn't forced. It wasn't political. It looked... genuine. His Beta frowned. "I don't understand." "What?" "She isn't..." "The monster everyone described?" The Beta nodded slowly. Ryker watched as Carley laughed at something the stable boy said before continuing toward the keep. "No." He spoke almost to himself. "She isn't." Onyx stirred quietly inside him. "Interesting." --- Carley reached the guest wing where each visiting Alpha had been assigned private quarters. Her room overlooked the forest. Sunlight spilled through tall windows, warming polished timber floors. Someone had already placed fresh wildflowers beside the bed. She recognised them instantly. Moon daisies. Flowers that grew naturally only along the northern border. Someone had gone to considerable effort. A handwritten note rested beside the vase. Welcome to Blackwood Keep, Alpha Carley. If there is anything you require during your stay, please let the household know. We hope your journey was comfortable. No signature. Just simple hospitality. She smiled. "Thoughtful." Fenrir hummed. "The Blackwoods have always respected guests." "I remember." She set her bag down before walking onto the balcony. The mountains stretched endlessly beyond the fortress walls. Beautiful. Peaceful. For a fleeting moment... She forgot why she'd come. Then a distant horn echoed through the valley. The council would gather within the hour. Politics. Arguments. Old grudges. She sighed. "Let's get this over with." --- The Great Council Hall was already filling by the time Carley arrived. Rows of carved oak seats circled an enormous stone table etched with the symbols of every recognised pack. Conversations echoed beneath the vaulted ceiling. Power radiated from every corner of the room. Some of the strongest wolves in the kingdom stood only metres apart. Yet something about the hall felt strangely... expectant. As though the building itself was waiting. Carley stepped through the doorway. Silence rippled outward. Every conversation stopped. Dozens of eyes turned toward her. Some curious. Some wary. Some openly hostile. She ignored them all. Lifting her chin, she walked forward with the quiet confidence of an Alpha who carried not only her own name, but the hopes of an entire pack. Fenrir became very still. "Do you feel that?" She frowned. "What?" "Someone is looking for us." Her heartbeat quickened. Not from fear. From something she couldn't explain. Slowly... Almost against her own will... She looked across the chamber. Straight into the eyes of the tallest Alpha she had ever seen. Dark hair. Broad shoulders. Calm blue eyes. For one suspended heartbeat, the noise, the council, the gathered Alphas—everything else faded into the background. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them moved. Fenrir rose within her soul. Not with aggression. Not with anger. With absolute certainty. "There you are." And somewhere across the chamber, though she could not hear him... Another wolf whispered the very same words.
