Chapter Fourteen – Beneath the Moon (Part One) The castle clock struck midnight. Its deep chime echoed through the halls of Blackwood Keep before fading into silence. Most of the summit guests had long since retired to their chambers, exhausted from a day of politics, negotiations and careful smiles. Torches burned low along the corridors, their flames dancing lazily in the still night air. It was the perfect time to disappear. --- Carley Carley stood beside the window of her chamber, her cloak fastened loosely around her shoulders. Her heart wasn't racing because she feared being caught. It raced because, in only a few moments, she'd see Ryker again. Fenrir stretched contentedly within her mind. "He's already waiting." Carley smiled. "How do you know?" "Because Onyx is pacing." A soft laugh escaped her. "He's nervous?" "Excited." There was a gentle knock at the door. Three quick taps. Rowan. She opened it to find her Beta leaning casually against the frame, trying—and failing—to hide a grin. "You look entirely too pleased with yourself." "I've just convinced two visiting Alphas that Elias challenged the Blackwood warriors to a late-night arm-wrestling competition." Carley blinked. "...He what?" "He doesn't know it yet." She covered her mouth, laughing. "You're terrible." "I've been called worse." His smile softened. "You deserve this." The words caught her off guard. "Rowan..." "For years you've carried everyone else." He rested a hand briefly on her shoulder. "Tonight, let someone carry you for a while." Emotion tightened her throat. "I don't know what I'd do without you." "You'll never have to." He stepped back, nodding towards the service staircase. "The guards have been rotated. You've got ten minutes." Carley hugged him quickly. A rare gesture between Alpha and Beta. "Thank you." Rowan smiled warmly. "Go." --- She slipped through the quiet passages of the keep, keeping to the shadows more from habit than necessity. Her boots made almost no sound on the old stone floors. When she finally stepped outside, the cool mountain air greeted her like an old friend. The forest beyond the walls shimmered beneath the full moon. And there... Standing beneath the ancient oak at the edge of the treeline... Was Ryker. --- Ryker He'd been early. Very early. Onyx had insisted. "She'll come." "I know." "Then why have we been standing here for fifteen minutes?" Ryker smiled to himself. "I wanted to be." His wolf gave an amused huff. "You've checked the path twelve times." "Only twelve?" "Fourteen." Ryker laughed quietly. "I've become predictable." "Only where she's concerned." Then... Movement. His head lifted. Carley emerged from the shadows of the castle wall, moonlight catching the silver embroidery on her dark cloak. For a heartbeat, the world simply... stopped. She smiled when she saw him. Not the polite smile she'd worn during council meetings. Not the charming smile she'd offered guests. This one belonged only to him. Ryker realised he was already walking towards her. She did the same. Neither of them hurried. Neither wanted to break the quiet magic of the moment. When they finally stood before one another, neither spoke. Words seemed strangely unnecessary. Carley reached him first. Her fingers found his hand as naturally as if they'd done it a thousand times before. "I missed you." The confession was almost a whisper. Ryker's thumb brushed gently across the back of her hand. "I've missed you since I left your room." She laughed softly. "That was only a few hours ago." "I know." "It felt longer." "It did." Without another word, he opened his arms. She stepped into them immediately. The embrace felt different from the night before. Not uncertain. Not hesitant. It was familiar now. Comforting. Carley rested her head beneath his chin, closing her eyes as Ryker wrapped his arms around her. "I could stay here forever," she murmured. "So could I." He kissed the top of her head gently. "I didn't realise how much I needed this." She looked up at him. "You don't always have to be strong." He smiled sadly. "Neither do you." For a long moment they simply stood together beneath the stars, listening to the breeze move through the towering pines. It was astonishing how peaceful silence could be when shared with the right person. Carley reached up, smoothing a stray lock of hair from his forehead before letting her fingers linger for just a moment against his temple. "I like seeing you like this." "Like what?" She smiled. "Just... Ryker." "No Alpha?" "No Alpha." He chuckled. The forest around them seemed to fall silent. Carley looked up through the towering pines, where shafts of moonlight spilled through the branches like silver ribbons. She smiled. "I've wanted to run since I arrived." Ryker's eyes lit with the same excitement. "So have I." For the first time all week, there was no council waiting. No speeches. No expectations. Only the forest. Only the moon. Only each other. "I race you?" Carley asked with a teasing grin. Ryker laughed. "I've heard that's a dangerous offer." "You have." "I've also heard you never lose." She shrugged innocently. "Rumours grow in the telling." Fenrir snorted. "Liar." Carley laughed aloud. "She says that's a lie." "I believe her." Ryker stepped closer, taking Carley's hand one last time before they shifted. "Ready?" She squeezed his hand. "I've never been more ready." Moonlight shimmered across the clearing as two powerful wolves emerged where the Alphas had stood. Fenrir was magnificent. Her silver-white coat almost glowed beneath the moon, every movement graceful despite her immense size. Ancient markings shimmered faintly through her fur, as though the stars themselves had settled upon her. Across from her stood Onyx. Jet black from nose to tail, broad-shouldered and powerful, his amber eyes filled with quiet intelligence rather than aggression. For a moment... Neither wolf moved. Then Onyx lowered his great head respectfully. Fenrir regarded him with calm golden eyes before stepping forward. Their noses touched. The forest itself seemed to exhale. Far beyond the physical world, the Spirit Forest awakened. Ancient trees whispered as moonlight washed over silver grass stretching endlessly beneath an enormous full moon. Fenrir stood there in her true form, even larger than she appeared in the mortal world. Onyx approached quietly. "I have waited a long time to meet you," he said. Fenrir smiled. "So have I." "You are everything the old stories described." She chuckled. "And you are kinder than I expected." "I learned from my Alpha." "As did I." The two wolves looked toward the distant horizon where faint stars shimmered through the spirit sky. "They've found one another," Onyx said softly. Fenrir nodded. "Exactly when they were meant to." Back in the mortal world, the wolves sprang forward together. They flew between the ancient pines with effortless rhythm. Neither trying to outrun the other. Neither trying to lead. They simply... Ran. Streams flashed beneath them. Cool mist rose around their paws. Owls watched silently from towering branches while deer paused only briefly before recognising no threat in the pair racing joyfully beneath the moon. Carley laughed through Fenrir's senses as they leapt over a fallen cedar. The feeling carried through the bond. Ryker laughed too. Neither needed words. They felt each other's happiness as naturally as breathing. At one point Fenrir slowed, allowing Onyx to match her pace. Their shoulders brushed gently as they ran side by side. The gesture made both Alphas smile without quite knowing why. The forest grew older the farther north they travelled. Massive trees, older than kingdoms, surrounded them. "This place..." Carley whispered through the bond. "...is beautiful." "It was my father's favourite trail," Ryker replied. "And now?" He looked toward her. "I think it will become ours." Warmth flooded the bond between them. Not excitement. Not desire. Belonging. As though two separate lives had quietly begun weaving into one shared future. Eventually the trees began to thin. The sound of gently moving water reached them. Moonfall Lake. The wolves emerged from the forest onto a grassy rise overlooking the water. The lake reflected the night sky so perfectly it looked as though the stars had settled upon its surface. Both wolves came to a stop. Together they looked across the peaceful water. Neither hurried to shift back. This place felt sacred. A place where the world beyond the trees simply ceased to exist. Fenrir sat first. Onyx settled beside her. In the Spirit Forest, the ancient wolves mirrored the movement. "They're changing us," Onyx observed. Fenrir smiled knowingly. "No." "We are reminding them who they were always capable of becoming." She looked toward the moon. "For centuries I believed my purpose was to prepare for war." "And now?" Fenrir's golden eyes softened. "Now I believe my purpose was to make sure these two found each other." The Alphas shifted back beneath the shelter of the pines. Neither spoke immediately. They simply stood side by side, looking out over the moonlit lake. Ryker finally broke the silence. "I've come here since I was a boy." Carley glanced at him. "Whenever things became too heavy?" He smiled. "How did you know?" She gently touched the centre of her chest. "Because it's exactly where I would've come." He laughed quietly. "I suppose that shouldn't surprise me anymore." She stepped to the water's edge, letting the cool lake ripple around her boots. "It feels peaceful here." "It always has." He looked out across the still water before adding softly, "I'm glad the first person I've ever shared it with... is you." Carley turned toward him, emotion shining in her eyes. "I'll remember tonight for the rest of my life." "So will I." Above them, the moon climbed higher into the sky. Behind them, unseen among the trees, a single branch gave the faintest c***k. Neither Alpha heard it. But somewhere in the darkness... Someone else had entered Blackwood Forest.
