Chapter Eleven – Where the Heart Leads

1294 Words
The second evening of the Alpha Summit arrived beneath a sky streaked with crimson and gold. Another feast had been prepared in the Great Hall, though this one was less ceremonial than the welcome banquet. Conversations were expected to be relaxed, alliances nurtured and friendships strengthened. Instead... It began with whispers. --- Ryker She wasn't there. Ryker looked towards the great doors for what had to be the tenth time. Nothing. Guests continued to arrive in small groups, laughter filling the hall as goblets were raised and musicians played softly in the background. But the chair beside Rowan remained empty. He tried to focus. As host, he greeted every Alpha personally. Thanked the cooks. Checked on the musicians. Spoke with elders. Made sure every guest had what they needed. Outwardly... He was every bit the composed Alpha Blackwood. Inside... Something felt wrong. "She's not here." Onyx paced restlessly. "I can see that." "Find her." "I can't leave." "She isn't safe." Ryker swallowed. He didn't know why his wolf was so certain. There had been no alarm. No messenger. No sign of trouble. Yet the absence of Carley settled like a stone in his chest. --- Every few minutes his eyes drifted back to the entrance. Still nothing. Victor Ironcrest noticed. Ryker caught him watching. Noticing. Measuring. Ryker forced himself to look away. Don't give anyone a reason to ask questions. --- Carley She stood by the window of her chambers, listening to the distant music drifting across the courtyard. The feast had started. Good. She hoped they were already talking. "You're hiding." Fenrir's tone was amused. "I'm observing." "From your room?" "It'll make them wonder." Fenrir chuckled. "That part is true." Carley smiled faintly. Missing the dinner hadn't been an impulsive decision. She had thought about it for most of the afternoon. If she attended... She'd spend the entire evening pretending not to watch Ryker. Pretending her heart didn't skip whenever he smiled. Pretending the pull between them wasn't growing stronger by the hour. She was an Alpha. She could command armies. Negotiate peace. Face impossible odds without flinching. But sitting across from Ryker and pretending she felt nothing? That might actually defeat her. There was another reason too. She wanted to see who would react. If the feared Alpha Ashen suddenly withdrew from public view... Who would ask questions? Who would look relieved? Who would move first? Sometimes the quickest way to expose a hidden enemy... Was to remove yourself from the board. --- A knock came at the door. "Come in." Rowan entered without ceremony. "You've started rumours." "Already?" "Oh, yes." She laughed. "How bad?" He began counting on his fingers. "You're offended." "Makes sense." "You're ill." "I feel wonderful." "You've secretly returned home." She blinked. "...Without my horse?" "I didn't say they were intelligent rumours." She smiled. "And?" "The interesting people are asking different questions." Her smile disappeared. "Good." Rowan nodded. "I thought you'd like that." --- Ryker Dinner finally came to an end. Ryker could scarcely remember eating. He'd answered questions. Smiled when appropriate. Kept conversations flowing. No one seemed to suspect that every instinct he possessed was screaming at him to leave. Onyx was relentless. "Go." "I have responsibilities." "Go." "They're still here." "Elias can manage." Almost as though summoned by the thought, Elias appeared beside him. "Everything alright?" Ryker hesitated. "No." Elias didn't look surprised. "It's Carley." Ryker looked at him sharply. "...Is it that obvious?" Elias smiled. "Only to me." He lowered his voice. "Go." "I can't." "You can." "The guests—" "I'll keep them occupied." Ryker frowned. "I've never left a summit dinner early." "There's a first time for everything." Before Ryker could reply, Rowan appeared from the opposite side of the hall carrying two bottles of Blackwood reserve wine. "I've just informed Iron Crest that Elias believes he couldn't possibly finish a bottle on his own." Elias groaned. "I did not say that." "You did now." Ryker blinked. "You two planned this?" Rowan grinned. "I prefer the term... anticipated." Elias folded his arms. "We'll keep everyone entertained." Rowan pointed towards the door. "Go." Ryker looked between them. Then quietly nodded. "My thanks." Rowan smiled warmly. "Don't thank us yet." --- The corridors of Blackwood Keep had never felt so long. Every step towards the eastern guest wing made Ryker's heart beat faster. What was he even going to say? He hadn't planned that far ahead. He simply... Needed to see her. To know she was alright. He reached her chamber door and paused. Then knocked. Once. Twice. Silence. The door opened. Carley stood there wearing a simple dark green dress, her hair loose over her shoulders. For a moment... Neither of them spoke. They simply looked at one another. "You came." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I was worried." A soft smile touched her lips. "I know." "You weren't at dinner." "I needed to stay away." His heart sank. "...From me?" She looked down for a moment before meeting his eyes again. "Because of you." The honesty in her voice stole every prepared thought from his mind. "If I'd sat across from you all evening..." She laughed quietly, almost embarrassed. "...I don't think I could have remembered how to be an Alpha." Ryker felt himself smile. "I spent the entire dinner looking at the door." She looked genuinely surprised. "You did?" "I kept expecting you to walk in." "I nearly did." Their eyes held. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was filled with everything neither of them quite knew how to say. Onyx whispered gently. "She's here." Fenrir answered with quiet contentment. "He came." Without thinking, Ryker took a single step closer. "May I?" Carley didn't ask what he meant. She simply nodded. He opened his arms. Slowly. Giving her every opportunity to refuse. Instead... She closed the distance between them. The embrace was gentle. Unhurried. She rested her forehead against his shoulder as his arms settled carefully around her. Neither of them realised how desperately they'd needed it. The tension of the past two days seemed to melt away in the quiet safety of each other's presence. "I've wanted to do that since the summit began," Ryker admitted softly. Carley smiled against his shoulder. "So have I." She leaned back just enough to look up at him. "You really came all this way just to make sure I was alright?" He gave a small, sheepish smile. "I don't think my wolf gave me much choice." "My wolf has been equally impossible." They laughed together. A private, shared laugh that belonged only to them. The room fell quiet again. Ryker gently brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face. Their eyes met. Neither moved. Neither looked away. Slowly... Carefully... He leaned forward. She met him halfway. Their first kiss was soft. Tender. A promise rather than a declaration. It lasted only a few seconds before they drew apart, foreheads resting together. No urgency. No fear. Just relief. Carley closed her eyes and whispered with a smile, "I was beginning to think fate had an awful sense of timing." Ryker chuckled quietly. "I think it still does." Outside the chamber, unseen by either of them, Rowan leaned casually against the corridor wall. Elias joined him a moment later. "Everything quiet?" Rowan smiled to himself. "Quiet enough." Elias folded his arms. "You know this is going to complicate our lives." Rowan laughed under his breath. "Oh..." "I think our lives stopped being simple the moment those two looked across that dinner table." The two Betas resumed their watch, guarding the corridor—not just from curious guests, but from anyone who might discover that, in a castle full of politics and ambition, fate had finally begun to weave its own plans.
