Perfect Mistake

Telling Parents

Kate and I have been best friends ever since we were in our mommies stomach. Our fathers are business parents. My father owns his own company and so does Kate’s dad. Our parents have been best friends ever since they meet in college.

Our parents live 57 minutes away from where we attend college. Kates family lives right next door to my family which makes us neighbors. We are practically sisters.

“ I have an idea”

“What?”

“ let’s go to the mall and get three baby onesies and then put it in a pretty gift box along with one of our ultrasound pics and if we find something extra that we want to put in the box then will add it. I think this will be an easier way to announce were pregnant.”

“Sure that’s sound like a good idea”

When we arrive at the mall I park the car and we head into the mall. We have never been to the baby store in here so we had to look at the map in the mall.

Me and Kate walked into the baby store and started to look around. Since I don’t know the gender of my babies I got gender neutral colors.

I found a onesie with yellow stars all over it. I decided to get two of the same onesie. Kate found a grey onesie that had a giraffe and elephant on it. When then start looking for frame to put our ultrasound pictures in and we found the perfect one. On the frame it says only the best parents become grandparents. We also find shirts that say grandma and grandpa on it. We buy all our stuff and head to the car.

We get in the car we start fixing the gift box up.

“ I think we should put the ultrasound picture last because it has our names on it. Then on top of the ultrasound picture should be the onesies we bought. And put the shirts that say grandma and grandpa at the top. So when they open they will see the shirts first.” Kate says and nod my head

“It’s already six o’clock so can you fix my box so we can hop on the road?”

“Yeah I’ll fix it. should we tell them in the morning or tonight.”

“We should arrive there around eight so we can tell them tonight.”

About 30 minutes into the drive we needed to stop to use the bathroom and we were hungry. After we stopped to take a break we headed back on the road. We arrived at our parents house around 7pm.

When we pulled into the driveway I notice all my brothers cars were in the driveway. Kate got out of the car and looked toward her house.

“ My sister’s car and my brother’s car are in the driveway.” She says confused

“ Oh my gosh what’s today.” And right when Kate said that I knew today was Saturday. Every Saturday our family gets together and eats dinner. Kate and I have been excused from Saturday dinner because of college.

“I wasn’t planning on telling everyone” I say trying not to panic.

We walk up to my parents door holding our gift boxes and ring the doorbell.

“ Who is it?” I hear my dad ask while opening the door. And as soon as he sees that it’s me and Kate he yells “ Everyone come to the door!”

Me and Kate walk into the house and my dad pulls me into a tight hug.

“I’ve missed you” and didn’t say anything back because I might cry. I just let him hug me.

“ babe why are you yelling” I hear my mom say

He lets go of me and I see everyone walk into the foyer. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I look over to Kate and I see her looking at me. She walks over to me and whispers in my ear to breathe.

“Noa what are you doing home?” My mom asks me as she walked up to give me a hug.

When my mom releases me I see Kate’s parents hugging her at the same time.

“Have y’all ate?” Kate’s mom asked

“ No Alice we haven’t and I can say for the both of us that we are starving” I say

“ well isn’t this a nice surprise” my eldest brother Nolan says.

“ Yeah why are y’all here and what’s with the gift boxes” Nick my other older brother says

“ The gift boxes are not for you guys they are for mom and dad. Kate’s box is for Alice and Jake”

“I smell something fishy going on. Y’all haven’t been to a family dinner ever since school started” Kate’s brother said

“Maybe my little sister missed us” Kasey said pulling on Kate’s cheeks

I laughed as I see Kate fighting with her sister.

“Okay can we eat now I’m hungry.” We all walk into the dining room to see my brother Nathan on his phone.

“ Hi little sister and little sister from a different mister.”

I just rolled my eyes and whispered to Kate to follow me.

“Will be right back” i headed up stairs to my room and shut the door. I then locked the door and went into my bathroom and shut that door.

“Why are we in your bathroom?”

“ because I know our siblings are trying to ease drop on our conversation. Plus I really have to pee.”

“Then why am I in here with you if you need to pee?”

“ I wanted to tell you we should leave the boxes in my room and when we are done eating will come back up stairs and grab them.”

“Okay works for me.”

“ Now do you mind leaving before I pee on myself.” Kate laughs as she walks out of the bathroom.

When I’m done I flush the toilet and wash my hands. When I walk into my room I see Kate is laying on the bed looking up at the celling. When she hears me walk in the room she keeps up and walks to the door. When we unlock the door and open it I see my brother Nate and Kate’s sister Lindsay standing in front of my door. I just roll my eyes and walk down stairs.

“Here are y’all plates. What do you want to drink.?” My mom asks

“Water”

“ I’ll have water too” when me and Kate were eating our parents were asking us how our classes were going. And me and Kate both have excellent grades. She is studying to become a psychologist. It wasn’t hard to talk to them about our classes or our grades.

When me Kate both got done eating I felt myself starting to panic.

“ Hey can all of you go sit in the living. Noa and I have a surprise to give you guys.” Kates says

“ Noa Why are you wearing a sweatshirt. I know your hot” My mom asks me before I could head up stairs.

“No mom” but to be honest I was hot. I decided on a sweatshirt because I’m showing. I know I just found out I’m pregnant today but you can tell I have a belly. I just thought I was getting fat but when I found out I was pregnant I realized. It’s my baby bump showing. As a small person people always notice when you gain weight. My roommates said they notice me gaining weight they just didn’t want to hurt my feelings. Kate has a stomach but it’s easier to hid since she’s not pregnant with twins.

We walk into my room and grab the gift boxes. When I walk into the living room I see our parents sitting on one big couch together while our siblings our sitting on the couches to the side.

I hand the box to my mom and Kate hands her box to her mom. Kate and I go sit on the floor in front of our parents. Kate reaches for my hand and squeezes.

“Okay you guys can open up the box” I say

When both of our moms open the box they look up at us confused. My mom hands my dad the shirt that says grandpa on it and she takes out the shirt that says grandma on it. She then takes out the two onesie I bought and hands them over to my dad. I squeezes Kate’s hand tighter because the only thing left in the box is my ultrasound picture. When my mom looks into the box she immediately looks up at me with unshed tears in her eyes. She lifts the picture frame up and hands it to my dad. I can tell my dad is reading what is on the frame. I knew he was done reading the frame when he looked up at me. I looked down trying to keep my tears from falling,

I then look over to see Kate with tears rolling down her face.

“Kids leave the room. We need to talk to Kate and Noa” My dad says with anger. I look up to see all our siblings have left the room and it was just us.

“How could you let this happen Noa. I’ve never been so disappointed in you. All your plans are now going to be put on hold because you are pregnant. Do you know how hard it is to raise a baby and go to school? You also on top of that have to make money to provide for your child. Don’t get me wrong your mother and I will help you the best that we can but you have put yourself in a tough spot” my dad says. I don’t even say anything all I could was cry.

“Same goes for you Kate. I’m not angry at you I’m just very disappointed in you. Having a baby means no more partying and no more drinking. You are only nineteen Kate and you have a lot of growing up to do. But like Mason said to Noa your mother and I will help you the best we can.” Kate’s dad says.

Alice comes over to me and Kate and gives us a big hug. She then pulls away and starts whipping our faces.

“What’s done is done and there’s nothing we can do about it. Why don’t you girls sit on the couch and tell us what happen. We’re not mad at so try to stop crying okay.” Alice helps Kate and I get off the floor and we sit down on the couch.

“We are going to ask y’all a few questions okay. Noa I can see you are about to panic so just calm down and breath.” My mom says

“ Noa why do you have two onesies and Kate only has one?”

“ I’m having twins” both my parents eyes widen but they don’t say anything.

“ Kate How far along are you?” Alice ask

“ We are both ten weeks pregnant”

“ Who’s the father?” my dad asks

“Tyson Jackson” Kate said

“Leo Bradford”

“ your telling me the both of you got pregnant on the same day by the two most famous football players I’m college.” Kate’s dad said

We both nod yes.

“Have y’all told them you’re pregnant?” Alice asks

“No we just found out we’re pregnant today and came straight here.”

“Okay will finish talking in the morning since it’s almost 12am. And Noa you can take off your sweatshirt now.” My mom says.

I grab the bottom of my sweatshirt and pull it over my head. When my sweatshirt is off I see my mom and dad looking at my stomach.

I ignore them and grab Kate’s hand. When we make it up the stairs we change into our pajamas and go to sleep.
