I woke up on a chair near Tina's bed. She was still sleeping and it was already late. I have to take Jody to school, she starts first grade today. I kissed Tina's forehead and walked out. I drove as fast as I could.
Jody was already dressed when I got home.
“Darren, Ty! pops are here!!” Jody said running to me as picked her up and kissed her. The boys also came running and I picked them up too. Jody is going to the same primary school as her brothers although she is too young to start Primary school, they still accepted her.
“Pops I'm too short to go to School!" Jody said “Maybe we should wait till I am of age” she articulated. I concluded that she has a high IQ.
“No, you're just fine my baby” I said smiling.
When we got to their school Darren and Ty said Goodbye and ran to their classes. I took Jody’s hand and saw a bunch of people standing near the first-grade classes and we walked there.
They took us to the Hall and we were briefed on what they do in school, the protection system and the trips they go to as first graders.
Then they called names to different classes and Jody was called out second.
I took Jody to that class and I saw a very familiar face and my eyes widened. I ignored my silly imagination and stood with Jody until we had to say goodbye.
I was walking to my car and what I saw earlier was no imagination. It’s Kim. I swear if I didn't know any better, I'd think she is stalking me. A slap or two would do but I had to be a responsible mother for Jody’s sake. I saw her walking towards me as I hurried to the car.
“Jay! babe!” she yelled as I got in the car and locked the doors.
She ran behind the car and stood there. I was about to reverse the car thinking she walked away. I frustratedly walked out the car and warned her to stay away from me.
“But I love you. I don't care about your wife she is dying anyway”. I raised my hand to slap her but her child came pouncing. Anger was an understatement of how I felt. “Leave me and my wife alone. I don't want to ever see you, it’s the last time I'm warning you.” I sternly said.
I don't want to believe what Kim said. My wife is not dying, I'll do everything I can to stop that from happening! I went home and grabbed new clean clothes, new wash rags and a pair of slippers. Tina is being discharged today. I'm so happy she can come home. I got to the hospital and she was awake. I kissed her and gave her a big hug. I was so happy to see my wife. She looked better.
I asked my sister and Catherine to prepare a proper home cooked meal. The smell of food struck us at the gate.
“Finally, I'm home…” Tina said softly almost whispering. “Yes, my love you're home" I replied in the same tone.
Catherine and my sister were happy to see Tina they gave her tight hugs as I took her bags upstairs. The family bonging session was needed.
After the beautifully cooked lunch I went to fetch the children from school. I regularly fetch them from the Care Centre where they do their homework and other things while they wait to be fetched. Darren was finishing his math homework while Ty was playing with building blocks creating a castle. I looked around and saw no sign of Jody. “Where is your little sister Ty?” I asked.
“I haven't seen her pops" he replied finishing his last piece to complete his frame.
“Hi. where is Jody Wilson?” I asked her teacher who was still filing papers in the classroom.
“A lady came here saying you called her to fetch Jody because you're at hospital with your wife who has cancer." The teacher said. “I’m really sorry to hear that your wife is sick”
“Oh f**k! How old did she look?" I asked panicking
“She looked like she's in her mid-twenties long hair average height and very beautiful” The teacher added.
“Kim! its Kim!! She kidnapped my daughter!”
