Chapter 1
CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Rain poured relentlessly onto the streets of Chicago, turning the asphalt into reflective rivers that mirrored the city lights. Valeria Sanchez hurried along the sidewalk, her black umbrella barely shielding her from the cold drops. Tonight felt different. There was a tension in the air, like the city itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.
At twenty-two, Valeria still felt out of place. She had recently graduated from the University of Illinois, and though she had landed a temporary job at a small bookstore in downtown Chicago, the monotony of her life left her restless. She had always sensed that something was missing, that her life was too ordinary for the person she was meant to become. And tonight, she was about to discover exactly how true that feeling was.
Her phone buzzed suddenly, breaking her thoughts. A message from an unknown number lit up the screen, casting a cold blue glow across her face. The message read:
“Trust nothing you see. Everything will change tonight. Seek the truth in your blood.”
Valeria froze. A prank? A spam message? But something about the words sent a shiver down her spine. Her pulse quickened, and she felt an inexplicable sense of urgency. She tucked the phone into her coat pocket and continued toward her apartment, but a creeping feeling of being watched followed her.
When she reached her small, brick-faced apartment on the north side, she noticed the door was slightly ajar. Her heart jumped. Something was wrong. She pushed the door open carefully. The apartment was silent except for the sound of rain hitting the windows. Everything seemed normal… until she saw the envelope on the kitchen counter. Her name was written on it in elegant, black ink.
Hands trembling, she opened the envelope. Inside was a silver medallion, engraved with a symbol she didn’t recognize, and a note:
“Valeria, the past you’ve ignored is your future. Go to Lincoln Park before midnight.”
Her breath caught. Lincoln Park… she knew it well. A sprawling park near Lake Michigan, full of walking trails and dense tree groves. Rumors and urban legends surrounded parts of it, especially the old, secluded areas no one dared to enter after dark. Yet something about the note and medallion compelled her to go. Fear and curiosity warred inside her.
She pulled on her black coat, grabbed the umbrella, and stepped back into the rain. Each step toward Lincoln Park felt like a step into another world. The city around her seemed quieter, more expectant, as if it were alive and watching. Thoughts of her family surfaced, her parents had died in a car accident when she was ten, leaving her with her grandmother. Her grandmother had often spoken of family secrets Valeria had never fully understood. Now it felt as though those words had real meaning.
Mist rose from the grass as she entered the park, curling around the lampposts and trees. The shadows of the trees swayed, almost as if alive, and the wind carried whispers she could barely hear. She took a deep breath and stepped onto the main trail, feeling the medallion vibrate slightly in her hand. A soft glow emanated from it, illuminating the strange symbol carved into its surface.
A crackling sound behind a tree startled her. She turned to see a man standing there, tall and imposing, wearing a long dark coat. His green eyes glowed faintly in the fog. Valeria felt a shiver of both fear and familiarity.
You shouldn’t have come here alone , the man said, his voice calm but commanding.
Who… who are you? , Valeria asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Someone who knows your true name , he replied, . Someone who knows what you are… and what is about to awaken inside you.
Before she could respond, a gust of wind swept through the park. The mist thickened. The trees bent as if moving toward her, and a low, almost human murmur echoed in the air. The medallion glowed brighter, and warmth spread through her chest. Then it happened.
A vision, vivid and brief, flashed before her eyes. She saw her mother, young and radiant, holding an ancient book marked with the same symbols as the medallion. She saw her own childhood, moments of joy and fear, then a shadowy figure approaching, trying to snuff out her light. The vision ended with a whisper that echoed in her mind:
“Awaken, Valeria. Your destiny calls.”
The wind stopped suddenly, leaving a profound silence. Valeria swayed, overwhelmed by what she had just seen. The man stepped closer, his expression a mix of concern and something deeper, almost recognition.
You have no idea what’s happening , he said softly, . But if you accept, I can help you understand.
Valeria’s mind raced. Who was this man? Why did she feel she could trust him, though she had never met him? And most importantly, what did all of this mean for the ordinary life she had taken for granted?
What if it’s dangerous? , she asked, voice trembling.
Everything worth having carries risk , he said, extending his hand, . But if you don’t take it, you will never know the truth.
Valeria glanced at the medallion, then at him, and finally at the dark path that led deeper into the park. Something inside her told her to follow. With a last glance toward the city skyline, she took his hand and stepped forward.
At that moment, the medallion flared with light, enveloping her in warmth that cut through the cold night. Energy surged through her, connecting her to something far larger than herself. A soft, feminine voice, ethereal and distant, resonated in her mind:
“You have been chosen, Valeria. Your destiny is greater than you imagine.”
The man guided her down a hidden trail where the trees arched overhead, forming a natural gateway. Each step echoed on the damp ground. Fear was absent, only awe and determination filled her.
Finally, they reached a clearing bathed in silver light emanating from the earth. In the center, a circle of ancient symbols was carved into smooth stones. The man turned to her:
This is where your training begins. Here, you will discover who you truly are and what you can become. But I warn you: it will not be easy. This world is full of dangers, and your greatest enemy may be someone you love.
Valeria took a deep breath. The night that had begun like any other had become the start of something unimaginable. Her ordinary life was gone, replaced by a world of secrets, betrayal, and power she had never imagined.
I’m ready , she said finally, surprising herself with her conviction.
The man nodded and handed her an ancient book, engraved with symbols identical to those on the medallion.
Then begin, Valeria Sanchez. Welcome to the world that has always been yours.
Outside, the rain continued to fall, but in the clearing, the medallion’s glow lit her face. For the first time, Valeria felt she was exactly where she belonged. Something inside her had awakened, and there was no turning back.
That night, Valeria’s life ceased to be ordinary forever. And though she didn’t yet know it, her destiny would take her through secrets, betrayals, and impossible love, transforming her completely.
