Chapter 38: FailureI’M IN DARKNESS, or more correctly, in nothingness. Featurelessness, and a slow becoming. Shapes emerge like a landscape obscured by mist, fuzzy and indistinct. Sounds filter in, distant and unclear. The growing light is unsettling, but it also brings a strange peace. That form hidden behind the mist, that voice I can’t quite hear, that silver gaze. It’s painful. But it is good. I drift between sleep and waking. Everything hurts, but the hurt is more distant when I sleep, when I go away into that other world. While I sleep, I am safe. For now. When I wake, a painted face hovers over me. My skin aches and stings. Something’s poured down my throat. I choke and cough, setting off fresh waves of pain. Voices. They make no sense.
