Shadows of Deceit Bella was jolted awake by the sharp ringing of her phone. Without checking the screen, she grabbed it from the bedside table and pressed it to her ear. “Hello?” her voice was groggy, still heavy with sleep. “Good morning, Miss Thompson,” a familiar voice said, smooth and confident. How about our agreement? Have you signed it? Bella's heart sank as she recognized the voice. It was Sam. She bolted upright in bed, her eyes darting to the clock on her nightstand. **9 a.m.** already. Panic surged through her. "How did I sleep this long?" she whispered under her breath. “hello? Can you hear me? Sam's voice cut through her thoughts, sounding irritated by the delay. “Y-yes,” Bella stammered, trying to pull herself together. “I've signed it.” “Good,” he replied, his tone colder than before. I'll send someone to pick you up this afternoon. Be prepared. Without waiting for a response, Sam hung up. Bella stared at the phone in disbelief, her hand trembling slightly. Something about Sam's voice unsettled her more than usual today. And then, like a tidal wave, the memory of the message from the mysterious j hit her. Do not sign it. The Asher is dangerous. "Damn it!" Bella cursed as she jumped out of bed, rushing to change her clothes. Her mind raced. She was supposed to meet this mysterious j at the park, and now she was running late. Throwing on the first outfit she could find, Bella grabbed her phone and bag, bolting out of her apartment. The subway ride to the park felt like an eternity. Bella's thoughts kept drifting back to Sam. His offer, the contract, the way he had cut the conversation so abruptly, something was wrong. And now she was about to meet someone who could have the answers. 10 a.m. As Bella finally reached the park, she scanned the crowd. There were people everywhere, family, couples, joggers, but no one stood out. There was no sign of j. She checked her phone. No new messages. I'm late. Damn it! Bella muttered under her breath, scanning the crowd again. Her anxiety was rising with every passing second. "Who is j? Or is this some kind of trap? She wondered, chewing on her bottom lip. Paranoia began to creep in. Just then, she noticed some strange men, standing at a distance, all dressed in black. They seemed to be watching her, their eyes following her every move. Her pulse quickened as she realized she might not be safe. Instinctively, Bella turned to leave the park, her pace quickening with every step. But no matter how fast she walked, she could feel the men trailing behind her, always a few steps away. As she rounded a corner, a sleek black car suddenly pulled up beside her, cutting off her path. The window rolled down, revealing a familiar face. “Bella!” Jonathan called out from the driver’s seat. “Jonathan?” Bella's voice was filled with surprise and relief. “What are you doing here?” What am I—before Jonathan could finish, Bella yanked the door open and jumped into the car, her breath coming in quick, panicked bursts. “Can you please drive?” she pleaded, looking over her shoulder as the men in black started to close in on them. Jonathan frowned, his eyes narrowing as he took in Bella's frantic expression. I hope there is no problem. Are you okay? “Yeah, I'm fine,” Bella said quickly, glancing out the window. Her heart was racing, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very, very wrong. Jonathan, sensing her unease, didn’t press further. Instead, he put the car in gear and pulled away from the curb, leaving the park and the mysterious men behind them. After a few minutes of driving in silence, Jonathan finally broke it. So, what were you doing in the park? You looked like you were in trouble back there. Bella hesitated, unsure of how much to tell him. i... I was supposed to meet someone, but they never showed up, she admitted, staring out the window. Jonathan, I need to ask you something. Do you know who Samuel Asher is? Jonathan's grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly at the mention of Sam's name. He glanced at Bella, his expression cautious. Sam? He's the only son of his father, who died in a car accident a few years ago. Sam was still in college at the time. His grandfather, William Asher, was a billionaire and owned a massive oil refinery company with many shareholders. Bella listened closely, her mind piecing together the fragments of information. “Sam's grandfather, William, was getting old and wanted to step down as CEO of the company,” Jonathan continued. Sam's father was supposed to take over, but after his death, William decided to give the position to Sam. The problem was, the shareholders and even some of his own family were against it. They didn’t think Sam was ready. That's when the issue of marriage came up. They insisted that Sam couldn’t inherit the company unless he was married. Jonathan's phone rang, cutting off his explanation. He glanced at the screen, then back at Bella. “Sorry, I need to take this.” Bella nodded, her thoughts swirling with everything Jonathan had just told her. **Sam needed a wife to secure his inheritance. Was that the real reason behind the contract?** After the call, Jonathan pulled up to the curb outside Bella's apartment. Can I drop you off here? I have somewhere important to be. “Yeah, this is fine,” Bella replied, still deep in thought. “Thanks for the ride.” Jonathan watched her for a moment, concerned flickering in his eyes. Are you sure you’re okay, Bella? You seem... off. “I'm fine,” she lied, forcing a smile. “Just a lot on my mind.” Jonathan nodded but didn’t look convinced. “We'll talk later, okay?” Bella gave him a small wave as he drove off, but the moment he was out of sight, her anxiety returned in full force. Something wasn’t right. Her mind raced as she approached her apartment building, her eyes scanning the street for any signs of danger. And then she saw it. a sleek black car parked directly in front of her building, its engine still running. Standing next to it was a man, dressed in black from head to toe. He stood perfectly still, his face obscured by dark sunglasses, but Bella could feel his gaze locked onto her. Panic surged through her. "Is he with the men from the park?" she thought, her breath catching in her throat. "How do they know where I live? Am I being watched? Her mind raced with a thousand questions, but one thought overpowered them all: she wasn’t safe. Bella's heart pounded in her chest as she stood frozen on the sidewalk, staring at the man. Her hands trembled, and she took a hesitant step back, her eyes darting to the door of her building. Should she run? Should she confront him? The man didn’t move, but his presence was overwhelming, a silent threat that hung in the air between them. Who is he?" Bella wondered, her pulse racing. **"And what does he want with me?" As the tension built, Bella felt the ground shift beneath her feet. She had no idea who this man was or why he was there, but one thing was clear: “She was in danger.” The feeling of being hunted wrapped around her like a vice, and for the first time in her life, Bella wasn’t sure if she’d be able to escape.
