The Offer
"Can you hear me? Are you with me?
Samuel's voice echoed, snapping Bella back from her thoughts. She blinked, looking around the room as if waking from a dream. She had a moment, she wondered if she had imagined everything in the park, the mysterious text, even the subway ride. Am I hallucinating? Or just delusional? It had happened again, she muttered to herself, trying to shake the eerie feeling.
"Bella," Samuel said, his tone more insistent. If you agree to this contract, sign it here. Once you sign, there's no going back. He slid the pen across the table, his eyes locked onto hers.
Bella's thoughts raced. Just moments ago, she had been on the subway, anticipating a call that never came. Everything felt disjointed, like reality had shifted without her noticing. Everything glanced at the contract, her hands trembling slightly.
"Please," she said, her voice softer than she intended. Can you give me some time? Let me go through it today and get back to you.
Samuel studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Bella felt a chill run down her spine, as if she were being scrutinized under a microscope. Finally, he nodded, a curt motion that did little to alleviate her anxiety.
"Okay," he said, rising from his seat. Do whatever you need to. Get back to me tomorrow. I'll await your call. With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Bella alone at the table.
Bella watched him go, her mind spinning. "Is he really this reasonable, or is he hiding something?" she whispered to herself, unsure of what to make of his abrupt departure. There was something off about him, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
As she stood to leave, she noticed the contract lying on the table, glaring at her like a snake ready to strike. she picked it up and stuffed it into her bag, the weight of it pulling on her conscience. "Where do i even begin with this?" she wondered as she exited the restaurant and hailed a cab.
On the ride home, Bella flipped through the contract. The legal jargon was overwhelming, but one clause jumped out at her: if she broke the contract, she would have to pay back the money in full and in cash. "How on earth could i ever come up with that kind of money?" she murmured, her heart sinking.
The cab pulled up in front of the prison where her brother, Mark, was being held. Bella paid the driver and hurried inside, only to be met with the sight of a welder rushing towards her.
"Miss Thompson?" the nurse asked, her face etched with concern. Your brother has been transferred to the hospital. He had some complications. You should go there immediately.
Bella felt the ground shift beneath her feet. What happened? Is he okay?"she asked, panic rising in her chest.
He's stable for now, but his condition has deteriorated. You need to get a good lawyer to push for bail and better medical care, the nurse said, her voice firm but kind.
Bella nodded, numb with shock. She made her way to the hospital, her thoughts a chaotic whirlwind. When she arrived, she found Mark pale and weak, his eyes barely open.
"bella..." he whispered, his voice frail.
"I'm here, mark. I'm right here," she said, taking his hand. Tears stung her eyes as she looked at her brother, the only family she had left. "Don’t worry, I'm going to get you out of here. I promise."
But as she sat by his bedside, Bella knew the only way to keep that promise was to sign the contract. The thought made her stomach turn, but what choice did she have? She couldn’t lose him, not after everything they’d been through.
"I'll do whatever it takes," she whispered, more to herself than to mark. "I'll sign it."
That night, Bella returned to her small flat, the contract clutched tightly in her hands. The decision weighed heavily on her, and as she sat at her kitchen table, she could feel the walls closing in. "Two years," she thought, staring at the document. Two years of my life for his freedom. Can I really do this?
But every time she hesitated, the image of Mark lying in that hospital bed pushed her forward. "This is for him," she reminded herself. "This is for my brother."
With a deep breath, Bella pulled the pen from her bag and hovered it over the signature line. her hand shook as she wrote her name, each letter feeling like a nail in her coffin. But as soon as she finished, a strange sense of calm washed over her. "It's done," she said aloud, the finality of it sinking in.
Just as she was about to put the contract away, her phone buzzed. It was a text message from an unknown number.
Do not sign it. The Asher is dangerous. Meet me at the park tomorrow at 9 am if you want the truth. - j
Bella's heart skipped a beat. "Who is this?" she wondered, her eyes darting around the room as if someone might be watching her. The message was like a lifeline, pulling her back from the edge of a precipice she hadn’t realized she was standing on.
She read the message again and again, her mind racing. I have seen this happening before, but I can't see it finishing. Who is this Sam, why am I seeing this?. "Should I go?" she asked herself, torn between the safety of what she knew and the danger of the unknown. But the thought of finding out something that could change everything was too enticing to ignore.
"I have to know," she decided. "I have to find out who j is and what they know."
With that, Bella carefully folded the contract and tucked it back into her bag. She stood up, her legs feeling like lead as she walked to her bedroom. Every step felt heavier than the last, as if she were walking through thick mud. She collapsed onto her bed, exhausted in body and mind.
As she lay there, staring up at the ceiling, her thoughts kept spiraling. What if j is right? What if Samuel is more dangerous than I realized? But then she thought of the mark, of the promise she had made. "I can't back out now," she told herself. I've already signed. There’s no turning back.
Even so, the seed of doubt had been planted, and as much as she tried to push it aside, it took root in her mind. "I'll go to the park tomorrow," she decided. I need to hear what j has to say. I owe myself that much.
With that resolve, Bella finally closed her eyes, willing to sleep. But even as she drifted off, the echo of Samuel's voice lingered in her mind. "You stick to a deal once you’ve signed the contract," he had said. "You cannot change your mind again."
But now, with J's message looming large in her thoughts, Bella wasn’t so sure. She had signed the contract, yes, but perhaps there was still time to save herself from whatever fate awaited her, and with that uncertain hope, she finally drifted off to sleep, her dreams filled with shadows and whispers, and the promise of secrets yet to be uncovered.
