Chapter 5

When I awoke the next morning, I smelled bacon, eggs, and biscuits. The biscuits smelled like they were done but still being heated. I ran out of my room with my emergency oven mitts on and quickly pulled them out of the oven. "What the hell did you do that for?" I sighed in relief. My mother was sober and trying to cook. I was worried it would be the opposite since the biscuits were about to burn.           "They were about to burn mother. I came to pull them out so that wouldn't happen." In the back of my head I added that burnt biscuits are a hard thing to clean off of this pan. "Why did you put them in a frying pan? They're suppose to go on a baking sheet."           "Because that is how your grandmother fixes them. Then again, don't question me. I am your mother as unfortunate that is for me. Not the other way around!" I rolled my eyes. This same script again. So I ignored that and continued on. Besides, she clean no dishes around here anyway.           "Then you're suppose to put them in the cast iron skillet." I looked of at the stove. "Which you just so happened to have cooked eggs and bacon in."           "I wish whoever keeps leaving us groceries would stop leaving turkey bacon and turkey sausage. That stuff is so dry when you cook it." I rolled my eyes again at that. It was suppose to be healthier. But then I ignored that comment too and went back a few sentences.           "Why would you cook this stuff the way Nana likes it?" It didn't make any sense to me since she hated Nana with a passion let alone her preferred cooking style.           "Isn't obvious you stupid girl. Your grandma is coming over today to spend a week here for your birthday." Mom didn't sound so thrilled about that but then again, that meant that she would have to at least pretend like she cared about me which makes sense why she wouldn't be thrilled about it.           "Well, I will take care of the cooking this week. Why don't you go get ready for work. When will she be arriving?" I'm pretty excited for Nana to arrive.           "I'm going to pick her up from the airport after I get off of work tonight. Fix something special when you get home." I like how this time, she didn't call me a stupid b***h at the end of that sentence. Normally she would. Excited, I quickly cleaned up and got ready for school. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw the proof of my insane growth. My hair now only reached the top of my butt.           I ran out of the apartment, down the stairs, and out the front door to the lobby only to run into Jackson. He looked confused. I was still mad about what he said to me so I tried to ignore him. Emphasis on the word tried.           "Hey Katelyn. Do you know how to get to Redwood High School?" That peeked my curiosity.           "Why are you going there?"           "I start school there today." I felt my mouth drop open. He was going to be attending my high school. Life really was finally coming to kick my a*s for something and I need to find out why. I haven't done anything wrong.           "Um, I go to that high school. I could show you. Do you have a bike? You could ride with me on mine if you need." I can't believe I was being kind to this jerk. But then again, it would really be bad for him to start off at a new school late on his first day.           "Naw. You can ride with me in my car." I felt my jaw try to unhinge but I kept it firmly in place. Damn government kids always get good s**t. I took a moment to realize that my mind was cursing more now. I so hope I'm not becoming an angry shrew like my mom.           It turns out that his car is a 2004 Pontiac. I was amused that he would even offer to drive me. I was kinda harsh to him the other day. I gave him street by street directions. We soon arrived with ten minutes till the first bell. I walked him to the front office and then went to go sit in my homeroom. Mr. Wright was sitting at his desk chatting on the phone. I stared out the window until I heard my name being called.           "Katelyn Moore." I looked up at him. "You're needed in the front office." I sighed, grabbed all of my things, and went to the office. The same place where only 5 minutes ago I left Jackson in. I walked past Jackson in the hall. He seemed to be looking for a classroom. Hope he didn't get too lost on his first day. When I walked in, the receptionist lady pointed to the phone. I picked it up and said hello.           "Why don't you have a cell phone dear?" I was my Nana.           "Hi Nana. Mom never bought me one. She never calls me anyway."           "What about friends?" She sounded concern.           "Don't have any." She was silent for a moment.           "Anyway I was calling to see if I could get an extra key to the apartment when I get there tonight but your mother wouldn't answer her cell."           "I could get you one but you can't tell mom." Hopefully she doesn't ask why.           "Okay dear. Thank you so much. Now get back to class."           "Okay. Bye Nana." I hung up the phone and went back to class. I had only ten minutes left anyway so I decided that I was gonna skip the rest of homeroom. I went to the library and checked out a fiction book called Skulduggery Pleasant. It was something that I was curious about reading. The first bell rang soon and I went to my first class. Chemistry. We were suppose to be dissecting fetal pigs today. I had brought my backpack to hold my things for my Pre-calculus class which I have next.           As I walked to my seat, I heard some of the girls I have homeroom with buzz about how hot some new student in our homeroom is. I rolled my eyes at their antics. They were talking about breaking up with their boyfriends for this guy. He couldn't possibly be that hot. I was kinda wishing I would have gone back to see this new student. I felt the hair on the back of my neck raise a little when one of the guys described him. It almost sounded like they were talking about Jackson.           I sat at my usual lab table and waited for Ms. Kidman to start the lesson. I was anxious to do this lab. I knew most of the girls in my class had skipped this class while the other girls paired up with a guy. I was by myself of course. No one wanted to partner with me. In fact, the girl who had been assigned to work with me wasn't here today. Ms. Kidman soon got the classes attention. I just stared out the window and waited.           "Okay class. Today we have a new student joining us today." I would look but I didn't care. I just wanted to start this assignment. But then again, since my partner wasn't here, this new kid will probably be partnered with me. "Come on in Jackson." My head shot up at the mention of that name. "Class, this is Jackson Stewart. He will be joining our class now." What the hell?
