Chapter 16: MalakiI wake up in an infirmary, voices surrounding me. Everything is too loud and too bright. I feel like there’s an ax in my temples. Soon everything goes black again, but I can still hear people talking. I go back and forth like this for a while, and when it’s over I wake up with no pain in my head, and the light is tolerable.
“Mama?” Now I cry. My whole family is trapped somewhere else. There’s no one here to comfort me.
A pale blonde nurse shows up at my side and I scream. She reaches out to me and I jump off the bed, wearing nothing but a gown and an IV, my blue hair hanging down my back.
Serenity runs into the room. “Malaki, it’s okay, you’re safe.”
I feel stupid and embarrassed, and as Dawn walks in the room, too, Serenity pulls me into a hug. I’m shaking.
