MYRA DECIDE

970 Words
“Here he is” she said as she left. “Sir?” I managed to speak as it was my CEO who stood before me and not Becca as I had thought. “So, how does it feel to be in prison?. You know you could have saved yourself this stress by simply staying honest. Now, look what you caused yourself. The embarassment…the humiliation..how could you even stoop so low, my goodness” he said in a berating manner. “No..no, sir you need to hear me out.” “I've heard it all before, Myra. The money was put in your care and all of a sudden grew legs and went missing?” “I promise. I'm innocent” “Well, I'm here to let you know that you're free until solid evidence is provided against you and then, I'll deal with you myself…..Excuse me” I watched him leave. I wanted to further explain myself but more than anything I wanted to see my grandmother immediately. After some paperwork, I was handed over my things and I rushed into a taxi asking the driver to take me home immediately. I hoped Becca would be there so we could head to the hospital together but when I got home, I saw grandma in her bedroom laying on her bed with the life support machine next to her beeping over and over. Becca sat next to her and gave me the cold eye immediately she saw me step in Grandma looked lifeless. She lay face up. It scared me. With wet cheeks, I rushed to the bedside and held her hands which felt cold now. I caressed her hair and she sneezed. I was startled a bit but hopeful. “Grandma?.. Gran..are you okay?” “Granny” Becca said with tears in her eyes “Myra” Grandma replied softly. “Grandma, what happened to you, grandma. You had me worried sick.” “I should..I should be the one saying that, Myra. No pun intended” she joked. I giggled and Becca smiled with tears glistening in her eyes as she stared at Grandma with fondness in her eyes. “Can't believe you're still making jokes, Grandma” “Myra, I have something to tell you.” “Grandma, no you need to rest. Whatever it is can wait” “Myra, dear. You know how much I love you and ….your sister, Becca and I'd never hide anything from you. Myra…you're not Becca's biological sister, Myra. You were resc..” “Grandma, what do you mean? What are you trying to say grandma?” “Becca's parents, the ones you know to be your parents are not your biological parents. Your biological parents died in a car crash but somehow you survived and they found you…and.. took you as their own” My eyes widened in shock and disbelief. “Yes, Myra. I've been meaning..to tell you all this while. You're not…really…part of us? Okay?” Becca added. I heard the mockery in her voice but that was the least of my concerns. I held my hand to my chest as my heart raced and I felt the wetness of the blue shirt I wore, soaked with my pain. “So..you're trying to say.. you're telling me..that I'm not part of this family, Granny and you're telling me now? Why? Why are you telling me now? You should have hid it from me..you shouldn't have said it at all, granny” I said choking. I could literally feel my throat hurt like the pain was trying to force itself out. “I'm so sorry, Myra. I know I shouldn't have said this by this time of your age but I couldn't leave without saying the truth to you. It would be unfair. Yes, we lied to you but there's one thing we never lied about. Our love for you, Myra” she responded, a tear slid down the side of her face. I looked away, heaving as I sobbed like a baby. Becca cried too but her face was still as bright. “Forgive me, Myra.” The machine's short beeps all of a sudden turn into a long beep. I couldn't say a word. I didn't know what to say or do. I watched Becca go crazy shaking grandma's still body vigorously but grandma lay there without a care. Two weeks later, a burial was successfully done and after that a lawyer came around the house to tell me that Grandma had left her precious jewelry and the house in my name. I felt that it would be unfair to Becca and since I was not part of the family, what was the use? I didn't belong here. I had no right to anything here. “I would like to transfer every penny or belongings including this house..to Becca, her only surviving granddaughter” “Are you sure you want to do this, Myra?.... because I am quite sure she wanted you to be in charge of everything because she trusted you more than Becca and she knew you'd be able to make better use of the money to sustain both you and Becca. Don't you think you're making a mistake” “I know but what I've done right now is the right thing” my voice sounded nasal from all the crying I've been doing. That evening, I handed over the papers to Becca and she looked disappointed to realize that Grandma gave everything to me and stunned that I was giving to her and as I did, I gave her a hug. “I think you should keep it” I said The hug was forced because she tried resisting and I rolled my bag out of the house never looking back.
