Admitting The Obvious

*Nick POV* Noah and I have been taking turns sitting in Hope’s hospital room. He feels guilty for what he’s done to her, but he still refuses to change his way of thinking. “How much longer will it take for her to heal enough to get out of here?” I asked. Her doctor explained that because she didn’t have her wolf, she would heal like a normal human. “It’s like I’ve explained, she’s basically a human. She has a few months before she will have a wolf that can help heal her. I mean no disrespect when I say this Alpha, but Alpha Noah nearly killed her. You can’t expect a speedy recovery,” he said bluntly. I didn’t like his tone when he mentioned Noah. However, it’s his job to care for people, even if they were in Hope’s shoes. Noah sat quietly in the chair staring at Hope as she slept. His face was void of emotion, and he pretended that he didn’t just hear her doctor disrespect him. “I understand. I guess I just didn’t realize how slow humans actually heal. I’ve had interaction with them, but not for long periods of time. Thank you for all you’re doing for her,” I replied. He checked her vitals again, and listened to her lungs. Once he made some notes, he left Noah and I there, alone with Hope. I was just about to turn on the TV when Noah stopped me. He said he preferred the quiet, and asked that I leave it off for just a while longer. “Noah, what is running through that brain of yours? You never keep s**t from me. Please, brother, talk to me,” I said. If looks could kill, I would have been lying in a grave next to our father. He released a low growl, and then wiped his hands down his face. “I hate myself for this. You know what she is to us, Nick. You can’t lie and tell me that you don’t. I want to be excited about it, but I’m not. I hate that it’s her. I hate it with every fiber of my being. How am I supposed to allow myself to love her when every single time I look at her all I can see is Jonathon? I know it wasn’t her who did it, and I even believe that she had no clue what was happening, but I can’t stop the way my mind is twisting things,” he explained. I could see the pain in his eyes. He meant every single word he was saying. He didn’t like the way he was treating her, but I needed him to understand that only he could change the way he was thinking and acting. “I get it, and I know who she is to us. That alone should make you want to figure this out. I wish that you could just talk to her, and truly listen to her. She is remorseful. She feels awful about what happened. Come on, think about it. She is serving a sentence for something she didn’t even do just because Jeffery had a wild hair up his ass, and was ready to roll on a power trip. We both know he hated our dad, and only pretended that they were close to keep up appearances. Just think about it. When she is able, talk to her. Just please, don’t go off the deep end again and allow yourself to repeat this,” I replied. Just as I got the last sentence out, Hope started to moan, and ask for water. She was actually speaking. Noah went to get the nurse to find out if she could have something to drink. While he was doing that, I pulled a chair up to her bed. I noticed that the swelling had gone down quite a bit, but the bruising was still awful. She opened her eyes as much as she could, and when she saw me, she gasped. “Please, don’t,” was all she said. I quickly shook my head, and took her hand. She immediately pulled away, and began to whimper. “Hope, it’s Nick. See, no beard,” I said as I rubbed my face. That’s when I noticed the stubble. She thought I was Noah. She moved her head towards me, and when she winced, I told her to stay still. I would come to her. I moved my face closer to hers, and I thought I saw her smile slightly. “It is you. I thought, I, I thought you were him,” she whispered. She cleared her throat, and once again asked for water. “He went to see if you could have some. As soon as we know for sure, I’ll get it for you myself,” I replied. I noticed her begin to cry again. He had broken her completely, and I don’t think that there’s anything I can do to fix her. “I’m sorry. It’s just, all I can think about is how much I wish that I died with them. I can’t live like this,” she sighed. I didn’t want to hear her apologize anymore. There was no need for it. I don’t know what I would need to do to make her understand this, but I had to find a way. Just as I was about to reply, the nurse came rushing in like a bat out of hell. Noah was hot on her heels, but he kept his distance. “Well little miss, I hear you have been in here asking for things. It’s good to know you can still speak,” the sweet nurse said as she began checking Hope over. “I’m just so thirsty,” Hope admitted. The nurse agreed to do a trial to make sure Hope could swallow alright. She left the room to get a cup of ice water, and when she returned, she sat in the chair I was sitting in, and fed Hope the water. “That’s a good girl. Not too fast, we don’t want you to choke,” the nurse smiled. She sat there with Hope until the whole cup was gone. When Hope asked for food, she said she would need to get the doctor’s permission first. She left the room, and I could see that Noah wanted to say something to her, but I wasn’t about to leave them alone. “It’s alright, talk to her. Just know she is terrified of you right now. Even if you don’t want to, be gentle. She’s teetering on a very fine line right now,” I said through a mind link. I saw his head slightly nod, and I stepped back a little. If she became frightened again, I wanted to be close by. Noah sat in the chair, and he leaned forward on her bed. I noticed her flinching a little, but she didn’t pull completely away, and she didn’t melt down. “Uh, I know you have every right to hate me, and if you do, I don’t blame you for it. What I did to you was awful, and to be honest, I hate myself for letting it get that far. I want to be honest with you. I’m having a very hard time dealing with everything. So, I hope you can understand, and at least forgive me a little bit,” he said. A tear fell down her face, and I saw her hand move towards his. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. She was trying to comfort him. Her hand laid on top of his, and for the first time since he sat down, he looked her in the eyes. “I do forgive you. No one knows what a person goes through with a tragedy like this. Don’t beat yourself up over this. I’m alive, and can still change your sheets and clean your toilets as soon as the doctor gives me the clear,” she said, and tried to smile. This girl was something else. She was currently comforting the man who abused her, and was trying to make jokes. She even got him to crack a smile. I don’t know what the goddess is doing here, but it’s working.
