*Nick POV*
When Noah gave her the order to come speak to me within two days, I wanted to tell her that it wasn’t necessary. Yes, I wanted to have a one on one with her, but I didn’t want her to be frightened of me either.
“You have got to stop. You are coming very close to acting like Jeffery. That poor girl did not pull the trigger. There has been no proof showing that she had any knowledge of Jon planning on carrying out his threat, he said in anger. Both of you need to stop blaming someone innocent and maybe start thinking about what you could have done to have prevented Jon going off the deep end. You more than anyone know that dad was not a good person. He might have been at one time, but the second he started using his power to hurt people, one of us should have stepped up,” I told Noah after she left the office.
We were late for our meeting with the elders. So he basically ignored me as we made our way to the elder’s quarters.
They were waiting for us as we approached, and Elder Drea wrapped her arms around us as soon as we reached her.
“Boys, it’s good seeing you. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances. Please, come in,” she said.
We followed her inside, and we sat in their common room to talk.
“Elders, um, I know that the circumstances are less than desirable for our meeting, but I have a feeling there is about to be a huge problem. Beta Jeremiah is overstepping in more ways than he should be. To be honest, he is becoming increasingly violent with our Omegas. One in particular, we caught him assaulting because she defended herself against his s****l advances. Nick and I would like to move forward with our oath ceremony. We are asking for an exception to the rule for having a mate first. Not overlook it completely, but allow us to take over, and then give us one year to find our mate. If we don’t find her, then we will take a chosen mate,” Noah explained.
Elder Fallon didn’t look amused. Of course, he wouldn’t. He was close to Beta Jeffery. He was friends with Jeffery’s father before he passed away.
“Do you have proof of this assault?” Fallon asked, and then clicked his tongue.
“We saw the aftermath, and the proof on her body. There was a clear fang bite where he had nipped her collar bone. In a round about way, he admitted it without coming out and saying he did it. We would never accuse someone of something so heinous without covering our bases, Elder Fallon,” I replied.
Noah confirmed that we had seen the evidence, and neither of us had any reason to not believe her.
“When she told us what happened, Jeffery tried everything in his power to cover his tracks. The proof was right in front of him, and he still tried to talk his way out of it. He even tried dismissing her, but we wouldn’t allow it. He definitely did what she said,” Noah added.
Elder Drea stood up and moved to the window. It had a great view of the pack house, and she stared out towards it.
“One year? I don’t think that’s an unfair request. However, what do you plan on doing with Jeffery and Gregory once you take over? We just helped your father with disciplinary actions towards Gregory less than three months ago. He wanted Gregory removed as Gamma, but because of how his contract reads, there were no solid grounds to remove him. With a new alpha, or in this case, alphas, you have the option to choose your own beta and gamma. They don’t carry over unless you choose to keep them on. I’m assuming you won’t want that in this case,” she said.
We definitely didn’t want to keep the two men who had served my dad all these years. They had served their purpose, and with the direction we wanted to take this pack, their services were no longer needed.
“Yes, one year. As far as the two of them, we don’t want their help, and we don’t want either of them in the pack. Once we are sworn in, we will be banishing them. We will keep them from being rogues, but they will have to leave. Otherwise, we fear they will cause more issues than not,” I said.
Surprisingly, Fallon stood up to address us about our decision. Elder Luke had been very quiet throughout the conversation, but he normally was. He was a thinker, and usually thought carefully about what he would say.
“Boys, if you truly believe in your heart of hearts that Jeffery did what she said he did, and saw what you saw, then I agree with you about needing to change this quickly. I also agree that they should be asked to leave the pack. So, you have my approval. However, even if all three of us give our seal of approval, we still have to get the go ahead from the royals. It may take a few days to get those answers though,” he explained.
I glanced at Noah, and I could tell he wanted to gloat. He said that Fallon would be the first to agree, and my money had been on Drea.
“I’m with Fallon. You have my approval as well. Luke? What do you say?” she asked.
Luke took a drink of his coffee, crossed his leg over his knee, and nodded.
“I have been waiting for this day for several years now. The day you boys left for alpha training, I checked in every day with whatever alpha you were with at the time. This past year, I noticed Edward telling us less and less about your progress, and when I found out that I knew more than he did, something felt wrong. Your stepmother is the one who told me he quit checking on you all together. If the alpha called him, great. Otherwise, he had no interest. So, my answer is easy. I approve. However, one year, boys. If the King approves, which I think he will, that’s all we can give you. We urge you to allow your stepmother to help with the Luna duties until you find your mate. That is, if she is willing,” Elder Luke replied.
Our father gave up on us? That’s how it sounded to me. Just something else we had to deal with, and to be honest, I really wasn't that surprised.
“We will speak to her. We do have one more favor. Can we keep this quiet until we hear back from the king? Even then, we would like to do our oath in private. Jeffery and Gregory will find out when their bond breaks,” Noah said.
They agreed on our terms, and Luke said he would get in touch with us the second they heard back from the king.
We appreciated their help and discretion. Keeping Jeffery and Gregory in the dark was the key to a smooth transition.
