Getting Through It

1164 Words
*Hope POV* For three days I had no incidents. I was able to do my job, and avoid any of the higher-ranked wolves in the process. The only assholes I couldn’t avoid were Jasmine and Clarke. They made sure to make my life harder every chance they got. It’s gone from spitting in my food to putting feces in my bed. What little clothing I had was shredded, and my shoes stolen twice. In just one week's time. I know they are testing to see how far I can be pushed, but I just try my hardest to not let them see me upset. I’ve always been taught that when people mistreat you, it’s just so they can get a rise out of you. If you give them what they want, they steal a little bit of your self-respect and power from you. So, I’ve always just made it seem that things don’t bother me. Even if I’m fuming or hurting on the inside. “Hope you are on your own today. Holly has appointments outside the pack and won’t be able to be with you. Just remember the rules, and stick to your list. You will do fine,” Juliet smiled. I was glad that she had so much faith in me, and I just hoped that I would be able to handle this on my own. I glanced at the list, and my breath hitched. “Um, Juliet, this isn’t my normal area. It’s the alpha wing,” I said softly. “I know it is. It’s the only place I had to place you that wouldn’t have you working until later. Every other area is definitely a two or three-person job. You won’t have to worry about the Beta or Gamma any longer; They were let go yesterday. It’s just the twins right now. They’re the new alphas,” she said, and went on with her duties. I wish I could say that I felt safer with Jeffery gone, but I didn’t for some reason. A different kind of fear overwhelmed me instead. One I couldn’t explain. I had to eat breakfast, so I made my way to the dining hall and grabbed a tray. Apparently, I didn’t put enough on my plate, because Juliet ended up bringing me another one. I looked at the plate, and wondered why she would do that. She told me that I wasn’t eating enough to stay healthy. It was true, I was barely eating enough to get me through the day, but the way people were messing with me, I was afraid to get too much at a time. After I ate what was in front of me, I took my tray to the dish drop off. If I had known that Clarke was in that area today, I would have just skipped breakfast all together. I sat my tray on the counter like we were supposed to, and she knocked it onto the floor, causing a loud crash. Everyone’s eyes were now on me, and Juliet came rushing to see what happened. “What happened?” she asked. I stood there silent, and Clarke told her that I purposely dropped the tray on the floor. “She is being an asshole. She purposefully dropped that damned tray on the floor to make more work for me,” Clarke spat. This girl was really unbelievable. “That’s not true. She knocked the tray off the counter. She and Jasmine have been doing all kinds of things to me since I got here. They are the reason you’ve had to replace my clothes and shoes. I’m not going to get punished because they are childish,” I said as I stood up for myself. Juliet smirked, and then turned to Clarke. I wasn’t sure what to expect from her, but I was surprised that she listened to me. “I saw what happened. I’ve seen everything from the past week. Apparently, those two forgot there are cameras nearly everywhere in the pack house. The second your first set of clothing was tampered with, I started watching. Clarke, this is your final warning. Anything else, you will serve the rest of your sentence in the cells. I won’t tolerate this bullshit. Hope you need to start your duties,” she said and walked away. I did as she said, and grabbed my cleaning cart from the closet. Once I had my keys, I left for the alpha wing. The Alpha wing was where all the higher-ranked officials lived if they chose to live in the pack house. Their private offices are also located in that wing. I started with the offices so that once they started their day I didn’t have to bother them. The less I came in contact with anyone the better for me. As I was nearly finished dusting one office, the door opened. The familiar smell of hazelnuts and vanilla filled the air, and I knew it was one of the twins. “I’m sorry, I’m almost finished,” I said softly without making eye contact. “Look at me when you speak to me,” he said. I obeyed his order, and looked up at him. Thankfully, it was Nicholas. The kinder of the two. “It looks good here. Thank you for your hard work. How are you holding up?” he asked. Was he really asking about me? “I’m alright. It’s been, well, different. I just stay to myself,” I replied. I stood there fidgeting, not knowing if I should go back to my work, or if I should stay still and listen to him. “Good. Uh, since you’re here, would you mind sitting? I think it’s time we had that talk, and now is as good a time as any,” he said. Although he asked, I knew it was more of a statement than a question. He sat in his chair behind the desk, and motioned for me to sit in one of the others. I sat my cleaner and cloth on the table, and sat down in front of him. “I guess I need to start by saying that in this discussion, it’s just between the two of us. It’s not an “on the record" kind of talk. I just want to let you know how I am feeling about the situation, and see where your head is at. Alright?” he asked. I nodded, and told him I understood. I felt my mouth go dry, and I felt as if I were swallowing sand as I waited in anticipation. I asked for water, and instead, he got up and opened the mini fridge and handed me a soda while grabbing one of his own. “Thank you, I don’t know why I’m so nervous,” I said. The truth was, I knew all too well why. I was just waiting for it to happen so I could get through it.
