*Nicholas POV*
I noticed she was nervous, so I thought maybe some cold water would help calm her down. She thanked me for the sentiment, and then mentioned that she wasn’t sure why she was so nervous. I had never given her a reason to feel that way. Noah on the other hand, had her scared to death.
“It’s alright, just calm down. Nothing you say to me will be held against you. Like I said, I just need to see how you are feeling, what’s going on in your head, and things like that. Just think of it as a conversation between friends,” I smiled, trying to get her to relax.
Once I saw her start to calm down, I waited for her reply. She wouldn’t look at me, and for some reason, it made my wolf, Nuno, unhappy.
“Honestly, sir, I don’t know how I feel anymore. I try not to think, otherwise, I think I might drive myself insane. I’m not in my right frame of mind anyway. In this past week, my clothes were destroyed, my food was spit in multiple times, and more. Thankfully, my uniform wasn’t messed with, and Juliet was able to find me more clothes and another pair of shoes. In my opinion, I think more thought needs to go into who gets put on work detail, and who goes into the cells. There are some down there that definitely need a cell,” she said.
I was glad she was talking, but this is definitely not what I wanted to know about. However, I was going to look into her claims, and make sure she had plenty of clothing, and an extra pair of shoes.
“Does Juliet know who is doing this to you?” I asked. She nodded, and said that her supervisor knew. She said that Juliet also reprimanded and punished the girls who did it, but it was no use. They were still giving her problems. That was something else I would take care of.
“I know that isn’t what you were asking when you asked how I was feeling. It’s just better than the actual reason you asked. The truth is, everything is so jumbled and blurry in my mind when it comes to that. Never in a million years would I think that Jon was capable of… that. I understand the laws, and my parents should have come forward after he vented to them. Got him some help, or something. It’s like I’ve said to others, I know I did nothing wrong, and I didn’t know what he was going to do. However, I will serve my time like I was ordered to, no matter what I go through,” she explained.
She was loyal, but also wasn’t happy about having to serve a sentence for something she didn’t do. Most of all, she was honest. Something I appreciated.
“Hope, there’s a lot of uncertainty and mystery where your brother’s case was concerned. You just got the s**t end of the deal. Tomorrow, I will arrange for your assignment to be strictly to this floor, and to the kitchen once you are done. It will mean a room change, but from the sounds of it, that might be a good thing,” I said.
She tried to protest stating she liked working with Holly. So, I would make sure Holly got moved as well.
“I know I can’t change things right now, Hope, but I can try and make things a little better for you. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out,” I told her.
She asked a few other questions about her parent’s home, and I had to be the one to tell her that the house would be given to another family.
“Jeffery emptied your house into a storage unit before we got home. I won’t let anything happen to your stuff. You don’t have much time, so you will need it when you get out. Your house, unfortunately, has been given to a different family,” I told her.
Her whole demeanor changed after that. Her already swollen eyes, squeezed shut. The strangled cry she released nearly tore my heart in two, and Nuno was trying to get me to go to her, and pull her in our arms. Something I couldn’t do, and he knew it.
I knew it was time to send her back to work when Noah came barging through my door. His eyes rested on her, and I could feel him getting angry.
“Hope, the office looks fine, go ahead and move on. I don’t want you to get in trouble for slacking,” I said, and she quickly moved out the door.
“Damn it, Noah! I was in the middle of the talk you ordered her to have. There is such a thing as knocking when a door is closed,” I snapped.
I wanted to hear more from her, but I doubt I was going to get it now. The fear of Noah interrupting us would always linger in the back of her mind now.
“I don’t give a s**t. We need to talk. The royals got back with the elders. They’ve agreed to our one year term, thankfully. Otherwise, we and the elders could’ve ended up in some deep s**t. Damn it, what kind of mess have we stepped into?” he sighed.
Things have definitely been a cluster f**k since we got back. Hopefully, now that we were the new alphas, things could calm down. We had a lot of things to fix, and I wanted the way the Omega servants were handled to be one of those things.
“So, Hope brought something to my attention. I know you could give two shits about what she says, but apparently there are girls in the Omega quarters causing issues. She said it’s clear that we need to be more careful about who is assigned down there, and who really deserves to be put in cells. Apparently she has had a rough go of it down there,” I explained.
He scoffed and kicked his feet onto my desk. “Nick, good for her. Do you really think that I give a s**t what happens to her? She will either grow a backbone and stick up for herself, or she will suffer because of it. That is all on her,” he replied.
From that statement alone, I decided that I would no longer give him any information about her. I would handle everything dealing with Hope Cole on my own.
