It Can't Be

*Noah POV* As much as I used to respect Jeffery and Gregory, they had to go. I was uncomfortable with how Jeffery just slid into my father’s role after his murder. It’s only been three days, and he has gone crazy with power. I can understand being angry and upset over what happened. Nick and I are devastated in our own way. We may not have always seen eye to eye, especially the past few years, but he was our father, and we loved him. Nick and I heard commotion coming from Jeffery’s office, and when we rushed inside, the sight we saw was disgusting. Hope Cole was lying on the floor with Jeffery assaulting her, and when questioned about it, he tried to blame her. Hope was maybe five feet two, and weighed close to 110 pounds. If that. Even if she did hit him, it didn’t warrant being treated like that. She explained what had happened, and I fully checked her face and neck to see if her story checked out. It did. I told Nick that her story was true, and when I asked the Beta to explain, he got cocky with us. He said he didn’t have to answer to us until we were sworn in. Little did he know, he was very wrong. So, we threatened to bring in the Elder to swear us in right then. However, when he tried to change the subject and turn our attention back to our father’s death. “Do you think mentioning his murder is going to change the fact of what happened here?” my brother asked. “No, but she does have something to do with it. At least indirectly. If you want to call the elder in, do it. I can’t stop you, but the two of you also know that you can't take over until you have a mate. So, Nicholas, your threats don’t mean s**t to me,” she smirked. We weren’t threatening. We were very serious, and had already scheduled a meeting with the three elders of the pack. They were the ones who held all the power in the packs. Even more so than the Alpha. “Explain. How does she have something to do with his death? Just an FYI, indirectly, it doesn’t make her guilty of anything,” I said coldly. We had known Hope and her family for years. Her brother Jonathon tutored us to make sure we graduated. So I was very curious about how they played into the death of my dad. “Ask her. Since you seem to believe her over me, let’s hear it from her,” he smiled. A smile I wanted to wipe off of his face. I turned to Hope, and she looked scared to death. My heart started to race, because I didn’t want to believe she had a part in it. “Hope?” I said softly. She looked towards the floor, and started to tremble. “He’s not lying, but I didn’t have anything to do with it, and I didn’t know he would go through with what he said when he was venting. It was Jonathon who murdered your dad. I didn’t know about it until I was ripped from my bed and thrown in the closet, and then brought before the Beta. He had my parents and Jon there already, and that’s how I found out. Jon had found out that your dad had hurt Connie Bradshaw, and he fully believed that she was his mate. He went off in a blind rage, and well, you know the outcome. I swear I didn’t know. Instead of murdering me too, he assigned me duty with the house Omegas,” she explained. I went numb as she spoke. Did she just say Jonathon had done this? No. There had to be a mistake. “What? Did Jonathon really do this? There has to be a mistake,” I said in shock. She shook her head. “No, it’s not a mistake. I wish it was. I am willing to take his punishment in life, but I don’t deserve to be treated like this just because I didn’t want the Beta’s s****l advances. I am not like that. I’ve been saving myself for my mate, and I won’t change that,” she replied. I had to get out of this office. She may not have pulled the trigger, but her brother, someone I admired and respected, did. I had very conflicted feelings at the moment, and I needed to speak to someone who was there when it happened. My stepmother. “Hope, go back to your quarters,” I said coldly, and she rushed out of the office. “Where is Gretchen? I want to speak with her now!” I asked. Jeffery said that she was in the guest suite. She hadn’t been back to theirs since it happened. I looked at my father’s Beta and told him that we would deal with all of this later. I then left his office in search of Gretchen. She was there, she had to have seen something. I knocked on her suite door, and when she opened it, she fell into my arms. “Oh, Noah, it was awful. I’m so glad you boys are home,” she cried. Gretchen may not have been our mother, but she was a wonderful stepmother, and an even better wife and mate. She was better than he deserved. “It’s alright, we are here now. Let’s go inside. I need to speak with you about something important,” I said softly. She held onto my arm, and I led her to the sitting area. Nick followed in behind us, making sure to shut the door. This wasn’t a conversation that needed to be heard by the Omega staff. “Mother, we just saw Hope Cole. She was brutally attacked by Jeffery, and we learned that it was Jonathon who pulled the trigger. Is this true?” Nick asked. She slowly nodded her head. “Yes. I didn’t want to believe it when I saw him in our room. At first, I wasn’t sure if it were him, but once he admitted to it, I knew my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me. I don’t think that he planned it, but something set him off to where he made that decision. Boys, I have heard so many rumors over the past year about your father, and I didn’t want to believe them. However, when I heard Jonathon explaining the reason he did it, I can’t help but believe it now. I don’t agree with that girl’s punishment. I told Jeffery as much. He said that I didn’t have a say in it, and carried out the punishments the way he felt they needed to,” she explained through her tears. Nick and I exchanged glances. I wasn’t sure if he was feeling the same way I was, but I felt that Gretchen was wrong about Hope’s punishment. She actually got better than what I would have given her. I would have killed her with her family. No matter how much my father might have deserved what he got, he was still my dad.
