They're Home

*Hope POV*

Holly and I had finished our morning duties, and were now working in the dining hall for the dinner rush.

I had just pulled pans from the warmers, and placed them on the buffet. I had been doing well by not looking at people directly, but when I heard the murmurs in the dining hall, I looked up. There they were, the twins. They were home.

My stomach felt like it jumped in my throat when I saw Nick looking at me. I wasn’t sure if he knew yet, but something told me he didn’t. Otherwise, I’m sure he would have come after me.

“You alright? You look like you have seen a ghost,” Holly asked. I stared at her blankly and then shook my shoulders.

“I don’t think so. The twins are home. This doesn’t bode well for me,” I replied. She gave me an understanding look, and we went back to work.

Roughly twenty-five minutes later, Juliet told a group of us to make us a plate for dinner, and eat quickly. She was ready to get cleaned up, and I was right there with her. I couldn’t wait to lay down and try to sleep.

After I sat down with my plate, Juliet brought us a soda. I thought it was a nice gesture, and I thanked her for it.

“Thank you, Juliet. I appreciate the soda. Do we have to have permission to shower? I’m sorry if that sounds weird, but I really have no idea how this works,” I said quietly.

She smiled, and sat down with her plate. She began to explain everything to me, but when I heard a male voice call my name, she went silent.

“Hope Cole! The Beta wants you in his office immediately. Don’t drag your feet about it either,” the guard yelled.

Fear filled my body, and I felt as if I needed to vomit. Juliet told me she would wrap up my dinner and place it in the warmer. I had only taken a few bites, and she was worried about me not eating. I noticed she played a motherly role to a lot of us.

Holly told me to stay strong, and I wanted to tell her that I felt anything but that. However, I didn’t. I simply got up, and walked out of the dining hall towards Beta Jeffery’s office.

I knocked on the door, and when he called me in, I felt faint. My insides were shaking violently as I walked in, but I tried to keep a brave face.

“You want to see me, Beta Jeffery?” I asked. He pointed to a chair in front of his desk, and told me to sit.

“You must have made a good impression on Juliet, she has given you a good review on the first day. I’m going to be frank with you, Hope. I wanted to kill you with the rest of your family. I only didn’t because I felt one of you needed to give back to the pack after taking something so valuable. You may have impressed your supervisor, but you won’t impress me,” he stated.

I wasn’t sure what to say to him, so I stayed quiet. When he got up from his chair and got around the desk, my breath hitched.

He stood in front of me, and made me stand up. I did as he said, but remained looking forward. What he did next made my skin crawl.

He stood there and stared at me for what seemed like forever. He then bent down and put his nose in the bend of my neck. I heard him begin to sniff me, and when he nipped at my collar bone, I released a yelp and smacked him. Something I instantly regretted.

After I smacked him, he stood up straight and backhanded me across the face. He picked me up and threw me across the room, causing me to crash into a large shelf.

I laid on the floor and released a low moan, and he came rushing towards me. He began kicking me over and over, and when the door opened, he bent over and sucker punched me in the face.

“Beta Jeffery, what the hell are you doing?” I heard one of the twins call out. He quickly began to try and cover his tracks.

“Uh, I called her in to discuss her punishment, and she went nuts. She began attacking me, so I was defending myself,” he lied.

Noah came rushing towards me to make sure I was alright, and he started to look at the damage the Beta had done to me.

“Hope, is what he said true? Please be honest,” he asked. I shook my head.

“No, not exactly. Yes, he called me here to discuss my punishment, but I think it was more so to tell me how much he hates my family. When I wasn’t sure what to say to him, he came around his desk and started to sniff my neck, and when he nipped at my collar bone with his teeth, I slapped him out of reflex. I couldn’t stop myself. That’s when he backhanded me, and attacked me,” I admitted.

He made me show him my neck, and luckily for me, Jeffery left a mark on my collar bone when he used his teeth.

Noah stood up and pulled me up with him. I don’t think he meant to jerk me as hard as he did, but it was hard enough for it to hurt my shoulder.

He led me to where Nick was standing, and showed him the marks. Not only did I now have a black eye and a busted lip, but also a cut from his teeth on my neck.

“Her story checks out. Jeffery? Care to explain?” Nicholas asked. I just wanted out of that room. However, something told me that things were just about to get started. Hopefully, by the time I got out of there, I wouldn't have any other injuries.

“I don’t have to answer to the two of you. Until you are sworn in, I’m the one in charge. I’m assuming Thomas told you about your father?” the Beta asked.

I froze at the mention of Alpha Edward's death, and I knew that if the twins didn’t know what happened before, they were about to find out now.

“He did. As far as answering us, I can call the elder here right now and have us sworn in. So I would be careful about what you say from here on out, and do you think mentioning his murder is going to change the fact of what happened here?” Nick asked.

“No, but she does have something to do with it. At least indirectly. If you want to call the elder in, do it. I can’t stop you, but the two of you also know that you can't take over until you have a mate. So, Nicholas, your threats don’t mean s**t to me,” she smirked.

“Explain what you just said. How is she involved in dad’s murder? Even indirectly?” Noah asked.

I wanted to die right there. Who knows, I might get my wish. It just depends on how the twins take the news.
