*Nicholas POV*
Noah and I have been away for over two years training to become an efficient Alpha. The day we turned eighteen, was the day that training started. Up until six months ago, we traveled from pack to pack, learning techniques from different alphas.
Six months ago, we started staying with an Alpha that my dad respects and had built a close friendship with. His name is Alpha Thomas of the Hidden Forest pack. His pack was located near Bangor, Maine, and although it resembled how things were at home, it wasn’t home.
“Boys, can I see you in my study please?” Alpha Thomas asked. We glanced at each other, and wondered what he could possibly need to talk to us about.
When we walked into his study, he asked us to sit with him in the sitting area. His face was somber, and his body language was of a man who had just heard terrible news. Hopefully, that news wasn’t something to do with us.
“Uh, I’m not sure how to say this, but I am going to have to send you boys back to New York. Something has happened, and the two of you are needed at home. Beta Jeffery called me earlier, and has informed me that your father was murdered this morning. They have caught the assailant, and the punishment was carried out, but there are affairs that only the two of you can handle. I’m sorry to have to be the one to deliver that news to you,” he explained.
I sat there in shock. I had been hearing things here and there from our friends that my dad had been making some enemies within the pack, but pissing someone off so badly that they would kill him. That was a little crazy to me.
“Did he say who did it?” Noah asked. Alpha Thomas shook his head, and said that Jeffery had just asked that we come home as soon as possible.
“No, he didn’t. Since it’s still early, if you left within the hour, you could make it back home by dinner time. I can accompany you if you would like,” he smiled softly.
“No, it’s alright, Alpha Thomas. I think Nick and I will be fine. Thank you for everything. If someone had to deliver that news, I’m glad it was you. Our dad thought a lot of you. We appreciate you taking us in and showing us everything you have. Hopefully we will see you again soon,” Noah replied.
The two of us left the study and packed our things. Alpha Thomas' son James helped us carry our things out, and load them into our SUV. We said our goodbyes, and started our journey home.
“Who do you think did it?” I asked. Noah’s eyes never left the road, but his answer wasn’t wrong.
“I think it was a father or brother who found out the heinous things dad had been doing to the young Omega girls. No matter how low you are on the ranking scale, if you mess with someone’s daughter or sister, it makes them capable of doing anything. Can I be honest with you about something? It’s going to make me sound like a horrible son, but I’m not sad he’s gone. I haven’t recognized him in a very long time. I think mom had been gone a year before I started noticing how awful he had become,” he replied.
I wasn’t shocked that he had said that. Dad and Noah had a very difficult relationship. Noah blames dad for our mother’s death.
When she needed a life-saving operation, my dad refused to take her into the city to have it. He said her wolf would heal her, and if it didn’t, it meant that the goddess was ready for her to come home.
Not two weeks after she died, our dad had another woman in his bed, and tried to act as our mother. Something that didn’t go over well with either of us. We made sure she didn’t stick around long.
“I know the feeling, but he was our dad, Noah. Good, bad or indifferent, he was our dad,” I said, and then left it alone.
Thankfully, there wasn’t much traffic, and we made it back to Willow Ridge in the middle of dinner. We decided to grab food from the dining hall before finding Jeffery and Gregory, and when we walked in, the whispers throughout the room were deafening.
Neither of us said a word to anyone in the pack, and we were cautious about who we spoke to. We still weren’t sure who had done it, and for now, it was best we keep to ourselves.
I was just about to leave the dining hall with my plate, and I noticed a petite blonde that looked like Hope Cole. Why would she be working with the Omegas? Her family were of gamma status.
I started to put two and two together, and found myself wondering if it was her, or one of her family members.
My dad had made several lewd comments about Hope in the past. She was maybe thirteen or fourteen the first time I heard him comment on her chest. I felt he was disgusting for thinking that way, and so did Noah.
“I think it’s one of the Coles that killed dad. I just saw Hope working with the Omegas,” I told Noah.
“No f*****g way. Dad and Jonathon were super close. I don’t think it was them,” he replied. Maybe it wasn’t Hope, but I didn’t think I was wrong. I would know that face anywhere.
We sat on the back porch of the pack house while we ate our dinner. Noah had texted Jeffery and told him what we were doing. We weren’t ready to talk to him yet, so we asked if we could speak to him around 8pm.
I just wanted to eat, get a shower, and decompress before having to do any kind of business or whatever he wanted us for.
“We are going to make arrangements for his send-off. I bet that’s what he wants to see us about. We can’t take over until we find our mate, and If he tries to make us choose a mate, I’m telling him to f**k off,” I told my brother.
He agreed. That was one thing that we both agreed on. We would only be with our fated mate.
“The only arrangements that need to be made are when we are burning him. Other than that, nothing else needs to be done to him. If the pack wants to come, it’s whatever, but we aren’t doing anything special. He didn’t for mom, and she deserved it. He doesn’t. I agree, they can f**k off if they think I am going to choose some random b***h to be Luna. Not happening,” Noah said.
I was glad we were on the same page, otherwise, this could get really messy.
