*Hope POV*
It’s been four days since I saw Noah. Nick is here regularly, but as far as his twin, he’s been MIA. Not that I’m surprised.
Nick swears Noah comes while I’m asleep so that I don’t get upset, but I think it’s just a safe answer for him, so I don’t get upset. I wish he wouldn’t tiptoe around me, it makes me feel weird.
I heard my door open, and it brought me out of sleep. I had expected to see Nick, but instead, I saw the smiling face of my friend. A friend I have missed like crazy.
“Holly! I’m so happy to see you,” I called out, and reached out my arms.
She came rushing towards me and wrapped her arms gently around my shoulders.
“Girl, I came as soon as I could. Juliet has had us crazy busy. Today is my early day, so she allowed me to come see you. You look like hell, girl,” she said with a smile.
“Tell her I said thank you. It’s nice to see a familiar face that isn’t Nick, the doctor or one of his nurses. I feel much better though. The swelling has gone down enough where I can see a little better. I hope I can get out of here and back to work soon,” I replied.
Her face fell. I wasn’t sure what I had said wrong, but thankfully, she didn’t make me sit and try and guess.
“No one’s told you? You won’t be working in the kitchen or with us anymore. The alphas sent someone to retrieve your things, and you are being reassigned to their wing as their private worker. Girl, you’ve moved up in the world,” she explained.
Why would they do that? Especially when Noah doesn’t want to see me.
“No, I had no clue. I’m pretty confused as to why they would do that. Noah has made it pretty obvious he doesn’t want to see me,” I replied.
She laughed at the fact that I called them by their names without the formality, and told me I was pretty bold to do so. Especially after what had just happened to me.
She couldn’t stay long, because she said that she needed to study. She had started taking some courses to help her move out of the kitchen, and when I questioned what changed her mind about leaving after she turned eighteen, her answer shocked me.
“I found out my baby cousin is orphaned. Juliet says that if I can get out of the kitchen, and can secure a place to live from the alphas, I could probably be given custody of him. She said she would make a recommendation for me to help,” she said.
I was so happy for her. She was such an amazing person, and if anyone deserved happiness outside this pack house, it was her.
When she left, I had every intention of going back to sleep. However, the pain in my pelvic area told me that I would need to contact the nurse instead.
As I was reaching for the controller that had the call button on it, it slid off of the table. I had no other choice but to get up and pick it up myself.
Unaware of the alarm on the bed, I stood up for the first time in days. The alarm went off, and I ended up falling to the floor when it startled me.
Two nurses I had never seen before rushed in to see what was happening, and when they saw me on the floor unable to get up, they turned and walked out. What the hell?
I was able to reach the controller, and clicked the nurse’s call button. A voice came over the intercom to ask what I needed, and when I explained, she said she would send my nurse in.
I laid on the floor for ten minutes before someone came in. It definitely wasn’t a nurse, and they weren’t happy that I was lying on the floor.
“What the hell are you doing on the floor?” Noah said as he picked me up. I hadn’t seen him in days, and of course he has to be the one to find me.
I was afraid to answer, but I didn’t want him to be angry with me again, so I answered his question.
“The call button fell to the floor. No one was there, so I had to get it. However, there’s apparently an alarm on the bed. When I got up it went off, and it was so loud. It startled me, I lost my footing, and I fell. Two nurses came in to turn off the alarm, but left me laying there,” I answered.
“They left you there? Would you recognize them if you saw them?” he asked. I slowly nodded, and told him I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble. I was fine now. Thanks to him.
Explaining that it was against the rules for them not to care for all patients, he said I would have no choice but to rat them out. I knew begging would be futile, so I told him if I saw them, I would be able to point them out.
This time it was he who pressed the call button. The same voice came over the speaker, and this time her tone wasn’t as pleasant.
“I said someone would be in. What do you need now?” she asked. A smirk spread across his face, and he shook his head.
“This is your alpha. I want you and every other nurse on the floor to come into room 516 immediately. We have a little bit of an issue,” he snapped.
She quickly changed her tune, and said that they would be right in. Minutes later, they all filed into the room.
He looked at me, and told me to show him the nurses who left me lying on the floor. I gave him a pleading look, and he shook his head.
“Tell me, Hope. It is their job to care for you, and leaving you on the floor is unacceptable,” he said.
I gave the nurses an apologetic look, and then told him which ones they were.
“The third one from the left with the pink pants, and the girl in the red shirt with blonde hair,” I replied.
He asked the head nurse to send the girls to his office in fifteen minutes, and then asked if I needed anything before they left. He said there was a reason I was calling them, so make my need known.
“I was having a lot of pelvic pain, but now it’s spread to my ribs as well after the fall. I was also wondering if I could get some more iced water and maybe some soup,” I explained.
The head nurse, whose name was Fern, came to my bedside. She was sympathetic to what had happened, and it meant a lot that she was concerned.
“Miss Hope, I want to apologize for Brittany and Opal's behavior. It won’t happen again. Is there anything else you might want?” she asked.
“A soda maybe? Grape if possible. My jaw is still sore, but I’d like to try some green beans or something like that. Thank you, Fern,” I replied.
As much as I liked the soup here, it was getting kind of boring. If I couldn’t start eating more solid things, they would keep me here longer.
Fern left to get my medication and food, and Noah sat on the side of my bed. He placed his hand on my leg, and I went stiff.
“Hope, when you leave here, you will be moving into a room on the alpha floor. You will continue to rest, and I’ve arranged it to where you can finish your classes online. Your education is important to you, and it’s the least Nick and I can do after everything. Your things have already been moved,” he explained.
It was too much. I was already hated by most of the pack members, this would make it so much worse. I couldn’t accept it.
“I don’t mean to be rude or unappreciative, but I can’t accept that offer. I’m already a target for people, and this will make it so much worse. I do appreciate you wanting to help me like that, but I just can’t,” I replied.
His face got very serious, and he stood from my bed. He told me I had no say in the matter, and that I would be doing just as he said. After he gave me the order, he turned and walked out of my room.
As much as I wanted to live in my old house again, if I was going to be ordered around like this for the rest of my life, I was going to have to leave.
