WHEN BILLIONAIRES COLLIDE Episode 2 — The Seven O'Clock Challenge The next morning, Isabella Johnson arrived at Sterling International at exactly seven o'clock. She stepped out of the elevator with her tablet in one hand and a coffee in the other. She had barely slept. The thought of spending the next several months working alongside Alexander Sterling had kept her awake most of the night. She hated that man. At least, that was what she kept telling herself. As she approached the conference room, she glanced at her watch. 7:00 a.m. Perfect. She pushed the doors open. Alexander was already inside. He stood beside the enormous glass windows overlooking the city, his hands in his pockets. He turned when he heard the door. His eyes immediately landed on her. "You're late." Isabella stared at him. "I'm exactly on time." Alexander glanced at his watch. "Seven minutes and twelve seconds." She frowned. "You've been counting?" "I have a meeting schedule." She walked toward the table. "Then perhaps you should learn how clocks work." A faint smile appeared on his face. "Good morning to you too." "Don't expect me to be pleasant before breakfast." Alexander looked at the coffee in her hand. "You brought your own." "I don't trust your coffee." "That's insulting." "It's intentional." She placed her tablet on the table and sat down. Alexander took the chair opposite her. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then he pushed a folder across the table. "The preliminary proposal." Isabella opened it. Her eyes moved quickly across the pages. She expected something impressive. Instead, she found herself surprised. The proposal was extremely detailed. Alexander had clearly spent hours working on it. She looked up. "You did this last night?" "Most of it." "When did you sleep?" He shrugged. "I didn't." Isabella stared at him. "You didn't sleep?" "I had work." She shook her head. "You're insane." "I've been told that." She returned her attention to the proposal. For the next hour, the two CEOs worked in silence. Surprisingly, they worked well together. Alexander understood technology and international investment. Isabella understood finance, negotiations, and global markets. Whenever one of them identified a weakness, the other immediately found a solution. Eventually, Isabella leaned back. "This might actually work." Alexander looked at her. "I know." She narrowed her eyes. "Don't ruin the moment." "I'm not." "You look pleased with yourself." "I am." "Why?" "Because you admitted I was right." "I said the proposal might work." "Because of my strategy." "Because of our strategy." Alexander paused. "Our strategy?" Isabella realized what she had said. She quickly looked back at the documents. "Don't read too much into it." "I wouldn't dream of it." A silence settled between them. Then Alexander noticed something. "You're tired." "I'm fine." "You look exhausted." "I said I'm fine." "Did you sleep?" She looked at him. "That's none of your business." "You're right." He returned to the proposal. But Isabella noticed the slight concern in his expression. For some reason, it unsettled her. Alexander Sterling wasn't supposed to care about her. He was supposed to compete with her. That was how things had always been. And she preferred it that way. By ten o'clock, they had completed the first section of the proposal. Alexander stood. "Come with me." Isabella looked up. "Where?" "To the technology division." "Why?" "You need to see what we're presenting." "I've already seen the reports." "I didn't ask whether you've seen the reports." He walked toward the door. "I said come with me." Isabella stared after him. "You're really bad at asking people politely." Alexander looked over his shoulder. "And you're really bad at following directions." She stood. "I don't follow directions." "I've noticed." She followed him anyway. They walked through several floors of Sterling International. Employees became noticeably quieter as they passed. Everyone knew who Isabella was. Everyone knew who Alexander was. And everyone knew about their rivalry. A young employee accidentally dropped a stack of papers when they walked past. Isabella glanced at Alexander. "We're frightening your employees." "They're frightened of you." "They're frightened of us." Alexander looked at her. "Us?" She immediately regretted the word. "I mean the situation." He smiled. "Of course." She rolled her eyes. Inside the technology division, Alexander showed Isabella the company's newest development. It was impressive. Even Isabella had to admit it. She studied the system carefully before turning toward him. "This could change the entire project." "Exactly." "Why didn't you include this in the original proposal?" "Because I wanted you to see it first." Isabella's expression changed. "Why?" Alexander held her gaze. "Because I wanted to know whether you'd see its potential." She stared at him. "And?" A small smile appeared. "You did." For the first time, Isabella didn't have a sarcastic response. Something about the way he looked at her made her uncomfortable. Not because she was afraid. Because she wasn't. She was beginning to wonder whether there was more to Alexander Sterling than the arrogant billionaire she had spent three years fighting. And that thought was dangerous. Very dangerous. That evening, Isabella returned to her office. She sat alone behind her desk, staring at the proposal. Her phone buzzed. A message from her father appeared. Dad: How is the partnership going? Isabella typed a response. Isabella: Difficult. She hesitated before adding another word. Isabella: But promising. She stared at the message. Why had she written that? Across the city, Alexander sat in his office staring at the same proposal. His assistant entered. "Sir, are you leaving?" "In a few minutes." "You've been working since six." Alexander looked toward the city lights. Then he thought about Isabella. Her confidence. Her intelligence. Her laugh. The way she challenged him without fear. He had spent three years trying to defeat her. Now, for the first time, he was beginning to wonder what it would feel like to stand beside her instead. And that thought frightened him more than any business rival ever had. Because Alexander Sterling knew how to win battles. He knew how to destroy competitors. He knew how to control an entire room. But he had no idea how to control what was happening inside his own heart. To be continued...
