The enemy cross table
WHEN BILLIONAIRES COLLIDE
Episode 1 — The Enemy Across the Table
The glass doors of Sterling International opened at exactly eight o’clock.
Every employee in the lobby straightened.
The reason wasn't the morning meeting.
It was because Alexander Sterling had arrived.
At twenty-nine, Alexander was the youngest CEO in the company's history. Tall, intimidating, and impossibly wealthy, he had inherited Sterling International from his grandfather and transformed it into one of the most powerful technology and investment companies in the country.
He was known for three things: his intelligence, his ruthless negotiations, and his complete lack of interest in romance.
At least, that's what everyone believed.
"Good morning, Mr. Sterling," his assistant greeted him.
Alexander barely nodded.
"What's on my schedule?"
"The board meeting at nine. Then the acquisition meeting at eleven."
"Who are we meeting?"
His assistant hesitated.
"The Johnson Group."
Alexander stopped walking.
His expression immediately hardened.
"Cancel it."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"They're already in the building."
His jaw tightened.
Of all the companies in the world, it had to be Johnson Group.
For the past three years, Sterling International and Johnson Group had been fighting over the same markets, the same investors, and the same major contracts.
And behind Johnson Group was its CEO.
Isabella Johnson.
Twenty-seven years old.
Beautiful.
Brilliant.
Dangerous.
And Alexander's greatest business rival.
---
Across the building, Isabella stepped out of the elevator.
She wore a perfectly tailored black suit, her long dark hair falling over one shoulder. She walked confidently through the hallway, carrying a tablet in one hand.
Unlike Alexander, Isabella had built her reputation without inheriting the position she currently held.
She had joined Johnson Group at twenty-two and spent five years working her way through every department before becoming CEO.
The media called her the Ice Queen of Corporate Finance.
She didn't mind.
She actually liked it.
"Ms. Johnson," her assistant whispered, "Alexander Sterling is here."
Isabella didn't stop walking.
"Of course he is."
"Should we reschedule?"
"No."
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
"I've been waiting to see him."
---
At nine o'clock, the boardroom doors opened.
Alexander entered first.
Isabella was already sitting at the opposite end of the long marble table.
Their eyes met.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Neither smiled.
"Sterling," Isabella said.
"Johnson."
"You're late."
Alexander glanced at the clock.
"I'm three minutes early."
"For you, that's late."
One of the executives coughed awkwardly.
Alexander pulled out his chair.
"I see you're still irritating."
"And you're still arrogant."
He sat down.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It wasn't."
Their eyes locked again.
There was something strange about the tension between them.
Everyone in the room could feel it.
They hated each other.
At least, that was what they told themselves.
The meeting began.
The subject was a massive international development project worth nearly two billion dollars.
Both companies wanted it.
The government had decided to award the contract to whoever presented the stronger proposal.
For the next two hours, Alexander and Isabella attacked each other's strategies with frightening precision.
"Your projected revenue is unrealistic," Isabella said.
Alexander leaned back.
"Only because your company lacks the technology to achieve it."
"Our technology is more reliable."
"Your technology is outdated."
"At least ours works."
A few executives looked down, desperately trying not to laugh.
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"You've always had a talent for talking too much."
Isabella smiled sweetly.
"And you've always had a talent for losing arguments."
"I don't lose."
"You lost the Henderson contract."
"Because I let you have it."
She raised an eyebrow.
"That's a very creative way of saying you lost."
Alexander stared at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then, unexpectedly, Isabella laughed.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't forced.
It was genuine.
Alexander froze.
He had heard Isabella speak hundreds of times.
He had watched her destroy competitors during negotiations.
But he had never heard that laugh.
And for some reason, he couldn't look away.
Isabella noticed.
Her smile disappeared.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You're staring."
"I'm thinking."
"About?"
Alexander leaned slightly forward.
"How dangerous you are when you're smiling."
Her heartbeat skipped.
She quickly looked away.
"Focus on the meeting, Sterling."
But Alexander smiled.
For the first time that morning, he was enjoying himself.
---
By six o'clock, the meeting finally ended.
Neither company had won.
The government representatives had requested another presentation.
As everyone left the boardroom, Isabella gathered her documents.
Alexander remained behind.
"Johnson."
She stopped.
"What?"
"We need to talk."
"I don't have anything to say to you."
"That's unfortunate."
He walked toward her.
She didn't move.
They were now standing only a few feet apart.
"You know we're going to have to work together."
Isabella frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"The government wants a joint proposal."
Her eyes widened.
"A joint proposal?"
Alexander nodded.
"Sterling International and Johnson Group."
"Absolutely not."
"I agree."
"Then we're done."
He stepped closer.
"Unfortunately, our investors don't agree."
Isabella's phone buzzed.
She checked the message.
Her father's name appeared.
Dad: Come home immediately. We need to discuss the Sterling partnership.
She slowly lowered the phone.
Alexander watched her expression change.
"You got the same message, didn't you?"
She looked up.
"How do you know?"
"Because my father just sent me one."
Silence.
Isabella crossed her arms.
"This is a nightmare."
Alexander gave a small smile.
"Finally, something we agree on."
She glared at him.
"Don't get comfortable."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
She walked past him.
But before she reached the door, Alexander spoke again.
"Isabella."
She stopped.
It was the first time he had called her by her first name.
She turned slowly.
"What?"
His eyes met hers.
"Tomorrow morning. Seven."
"Seven?"
"We're starting the joint project."
She scoffed.
"You don't give me orders."
"I wasn't asking."
She smiled coldly.
"Then here's something you should learn about me, Alexander."
She stepped closer.
"I don't follow orders."
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
Neither noticed how close they had become.
Neither noticed the spark in the air.
And neither understood why their hearts were beating faster.
Isabella finally walked away.
Alexander watched her disappear through the doors.
His assistant entered the room.
"Sir?"
Alexander didn't respond.
"Sir?"
"What?"
"Are you okay?"
Alexander looked toward the closed doors.
Then he smiled faintly.
"I'm fine."
But for the first time in years, Alexander Sterling knew he was lying.
Because the woman he had spent three years trying to defeat had suddenly become the one person he couldn't stop thinking about.
And tomorrow...
He would have to work beside her.
For the first time, their rivalry was about to become something far more dangerous.
Something neither of them was prepared for.
To be continued...
