CHAPTER ONE
The sterile scent of the hospital filled Emma’s nostrils as she hurried down the bustling corridor, her heart pounding in rhythm with the shrill beeps of the monitor. Emma’s dad had been brought in earlier that day, and the news had shaken her. A complex cardiac condition requiring specialized intervention, the doctors had informed her. And only one surgeon could perform the surgery. Emma rounded a corner and spotted him, standing by the nurses' station, his tall frame clad in a crisp white lab coat. “Ethan”, her ex-boyfriend, now her father's doctor. Emma’s stomach twisted up into knots as she approached him, his piercing blue eyes looking up at her with an unreadable expression. "Emma," he said, his voice as chilly and distant as ever. "I suppose you're here about your dad." He continued. Emma nodded, struggling to maintain eye contact. "Dr. Ethan," she muttered, her voice steadier than she was. "How is he? What's happening?" She asked. Emma’s eyes met Ethan's, his eyes lighting upon her disheveled hair, the worry lines that appeared on her face. "Your father is stable for now. He's resting comfortably." He paused, his jaw tightening. "But the surgery he needs, it's risky. There are no guarantees." He added. Emma swallowed hard, her head reeling. "And you're the only one who can do it?" She asked fearfully. Ethan's expression didn't change, but she saw something in his eyes. Pride? Rage?. "Yes,I am." Ethan answered curtly. Emma took a deep breath, bracing herself for the conversation she knew she needed to have. "Ethan, we need to talk about ourselves, About what went on between us." Emma said sadly. Ethan stiffened, his eyes narrowing. "There is no 'us,' Emma," he said sharply. "Not now. Our past has no bearing on your father's treatment. I'm here to do a job, and I'd suggest you let me do it without interruptions." He continued. Emma felt the lash of his words, but she would not back down. "I can't just forget our past, Ethan. Not when it's looming between us like this. Not when my father's life hangs in the balance." Emma said angrily. Ethan's lips tightened, and for a moment Emma thought he would persist. Then he let out a breath and ran a hand through his perfectly groomed silver hair. “All right," He conceded. "But not here. Not now. I've got rounds to make, and you need to prepare yourself for what's ahead. We'll talk later. My office. Seven o'clock." Ethan said. He turned to leave, then stopped, looking back over his shoulder at her. "And Emma. don't be late. I have a hectic schedule and I won't wait for you." Ethan said, turning on his heel, he walked away, leaving Emma to stand there alone in the corridor, a whirlpool of emotion swirling around her. As Emma walked to her father's room, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease wash over her. The path ahead was unclear, filled with obstacles and challenges that seemed to threaten to rip her apart. But she knew, deep within herself, that she had to face them head-on, for her father, for herself. And maybe, for a chance to finally lay the past to rest. As the hours ticked by, Emma sat by her father's bedside, holding his hand, and watching the powerful beat of his heart on the monitor. His eyes shut, breathing steady, but evident on his face was the cost the illness had imposed on him. The once vibrant man who had seemed bigger than life was now a fragile skeleton, at the mercy of machines and the skill of a surgeon. She looked back at the early years, the laughter and the love, and the later years, the distance and the disappointment. She had always tried to be the daughter he wanted her to be, the perfect heiress to his wealth, but it was never enough. And now, as she faced the possibility of losing him, she realized that she wasted so much time chasing his approval, his love. A soft knock on the door brought Emma back to earth. She looked up to see Maria, Ethan's nurse, standing in the doorway. "Emma," she said quietly. "Dr. Ethan asked me to check in on you. He wanted to make sure you are okay." She added. Emma’s eyes held a warm, sympathetic expression, and she found herself grateful for her presence. "Thank you, Maria," she said, managing a small smile. "I'm just... I'm trying to process everything. It's all happening so fast." She continued. Maria nodded understandingly, stepping further into the room. "I know it's a lot to take in. But Dr. Ethan is the best at what he does. If anyone can help your father, it's him." Maria said confidently. Emma looked down at her father's hand, still clasped in hers. "I know he is," she said softly. "But it's not just about the surgery. It's... it's Ethan and me. Our history. It's complicated." Emma said sadly. Maria's expression turned thoughtful. "I've seen the way he looks at you, Emma. There's more to it than just professional concern. I think he cares, more than he lets on." She said. Emma sighed, rubbing her temples. "Maybe," Emma answered, doubt coloring her voice. "But caring and loving are two different things. And after what happened between us…I don't think there's any going back from that." She continued. Maria placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Love is a funny thing, Emma. It has a way of surprising us, only to find its way back when we're least expecting it." She squeezed her shoulder softly. "Just. stay open of heart. For your father's sake, and yours." Maria said, urging Emma. With that said, Maria left Emma alone to her thoughts once more. Emma looked over at the clock, realizing with a start that it was already past six o'clock. “Oh?” Emma grasped. She just had enough time to get cleaned up and walk on over to Ethan's office for their meeting that night. Emma got up from where she was sitting and stretched, determination coursed through her body. “Dad?” Emma called out.
