Chapter1
THE NIGHT SHE RAN Kiera The rumor reached me during patrol like poison in my veins. "The Alpha's gift arrived tonight." I didn't wait. Didn't ask questions. My wolf surged forward, pushing my legs faster as I ran back to the Ironfang clubhouse. The packhouse loomed ahead, all dark wood and stone, windows glowing amber in the night. My heart hammered against my ribs. Something was wrong. Terribly, horribly wrong. I burst through the back entrance, the one only high-ranking wolves used. The hallway smelled sterile. Clean. Like a hospital. My stomach twisted. Voices drifted from Rylan's private quarters. Low. Urgent. A woman's chanting, old pack magic humming through the walls. I shouldn't be here. Every instinct screamed at me to turn around, to pretend I never heard that rumor, to go back to my patrol route and forget. But my hand was already on the door. I pushed it open. The world stopped. A woman lay on our bed. My bed. Her belly was swollen, massive, glowing with a golden light I recognized instantly. Alpha energy. Pack magic. Life. And beside her stood my mate. Rylan. Shirtless. His hand resting on her stomach. His eyes closed. His face peaceful in a way I hadn't seen in months. The mate bond between us snapped like a rubber band pulled too tight. Pain exploded through my chest, white-hot and devastating. My wolf howled, a sound so agonized it rattled my skull from the inside. My knees gave out. I hit the floor hard, the impact jarring my teeth. "Kiera!" The healer's voice was sharp. Shocked. Rylan's eyes flew open. For one terrible second, we stared at each other. His amber eyes, the ones that used to look at me with love, now held only cold calculation. "Rylan?" My voice cracked. Broken. "What is this?" He didn't move toward me. Didn't reach out. Didn't even step away from her. Instead, he turned to the healer. "Get her out of here." Four words. That's all it took to shatter five years of my life into dust. "No." The word barely made it past my lips. My hands shook against the cold floor. "No, you can't. Rylan, please." "Security!" His voice boomed through the room, Alpha's command rippling through every syllable. "Remove the Luna. Now." The Luna. Not his mate. Not his wife. The title. The position. That's all I'd ever been to him. My stomach lurched violently. I scrambled to my feet and vomited in the hallway, my body rejecting everything. The betrayal. The lies. The truth: I'd been too blind to see. Strong hands grabbed my arms. Pack warriors. Men I'd trained with. Men I'd bled beside. "Let go of me!" I thrashed, but my wolf was spiraling, drowning in agony. She couldn't fight. Could barely breathe. They dragged me backward. Away from him. Away from the woman carrying his child. A child that should have been mine. A laugh echoed down the hallway, sharp and cruel. Mara stepped into view, her red hair gleaming like fresh blood under the lights. Second in command of the she-wolves. My rival since the day Rylan made me Luna. "Poor Kiera," she purred, her smile vicious. "The barren Luna, replaced by a real womb. How does it feel to be obsolete?" The words hit like claws across my face. Barren. Replaced. Obsolete. My vision went red. Something inside me cracked. Not broke. Cracked. Like ice on a frozen lake, splintering in every direction. I ripped free from the warriors with strength I didn't know I had. My wolf surged forward, feral and uncontrollable. I lunged at Mara, my hand connecting with her throat before anyone could react. "Kiera, no!" Someone shouted. But I was already gone. I released Mara and ran. Down the hallway. Through the back door. Into the night. The garage. I needed to get to the garage. My hands found the keys before my brain caught up. Rylan's Harley. The custom bike he'd built himself. The one no one, absolutely no one, was allowed to touch. I threw my leg over the seat, my hands trembling so hard I almost dropped the keys. The engine roared to life beneath me, raw power vibrating through my bones. Shouts erupted behind me. Warriors pouring out of the clubhouse. "Stop her!" "Luna, wait!" I didn't wait. I slammed the throttle and tore out of the garage, gravel spraying behind me. The bike screamed as I pushed it faster, faster, the speedometer climbing. Sixty. Seventy. Eighty. Headlights appeared in my mirrors. Three bikes. Pack hunters. Coming for me. Trees blurred past. The road twisted and turned beneath me. My wolf clawed at my skin, begging to be free, begging to run. And then I felt it. The flutter. Tiny. Unmistakable. Life. Inside me. A sob tore from my throat, swallowed by the wind. I was pregnant. With Rylan's child. A child he'd never know about. Never wanted. Because he'd already chosen another woman to bear his heir. Rage and heartbreak collided in my chest, a storm I couldn't contain. The bike beneath me shook as my body began to shift. Fur rippled across my arms. Claws extended where fingers should be. Not yet. Not yet. But my wolf wouldn't be denied. The transformation hit mid-ride. Bones cracked and reformed. The handlebars slipped from my grip. The bike careened wildly, engine screaming. I leaped clear as it crashed into the trees, metal shrieking against wood. My paws hit the ground running. Behind me, the hunters howled. Closing in. I ran harder. Faster. Every muscle is burning. Every breath fires my lungs. The border. I could see it ahead. The invisible line where pack territory ended and human lands began. No wolf crossed the border without permission. It meant exile. It meant death. I didn't slow down. I exploded through the boundary, my wolf's cry echoing through the forest. And then I saw them. Campfires. Motorcycles. Leather cuts with patches I didn't recognize. Humans. Outlaw bikers. I tried to stop, to change direction, but my body gave out. I crashed through their camp, shifting back to human form as I fell. Naked. Bloody. Broken. Voices shouted around me. Boots thudded against dirt. Cold metal pressed against my temple. A gun.. "What the hell is this?" "Check her for weapons." "She's bleeding. Look at her eyes. Those aren't human." I tried to speak. Tried to move. But darkness swallowed me whole. The last thing I heard was a deep voice rough as gravel. "Get Jax. Now." Then nothing..
