chapter 1: The Heartless Prince
The village of Eldoria stood quiet under the heavy warmth of the late afternoon sun. Its cobblestone streets were busy with merchants packing up their stalls and children chasing one another, laughing as their voices echoed down the narrow lanes. The air smelled of freshly baked bread, ripe fruit, and the earthy scent of the farmlands that surrounded the village. Noelle walked with purpose through the bustling market square, a woven basket in her arm filled with fruits and herbs she had gathered for her mother. Her family, though not wealthy, had deep roots in Eldoria. Generations of skilled tradesmen, healers, and farmers had called this place home. Noelle’s father, a quiet and hardworking carpenter, had taught her the value of patience and labor from an early age, while her mother, a wise and nurturing woman, was known to be the village’s healer and counselor. They may not have been nobility, but the villagers respected them for their kindness and generosity. Noelle’s heart swelled with love for her home, for the simple joys of village life that filled her days with warmth and purpose. As she passed through the market, Noelle smiled at the familiar faces. She waved to old Mrs. Vance, who sold flowers, and paused to chat with the baker, a gruff but kind man who always gave her an extra loaf of bread. It was a life filled with small comforts and simple pleasures. But today, that peace would be shattered. A sudden hush swept through the square, and Noelle felt a shift in the air. The noise of the market stilled as the crowd parted. At the far end of the street, a black carriage drawn by four magnificent horses appeared, their hooves striking the cobblestones with an air of finality. Noelle’s breath caught in her throat as she recognized the royal insignia on the carriage—Avalon’s crest, a gold lion entwined with vines. Her heart fluttered with curiosity, and she instinctively moved closer to the crowd. She had heard the rumors, of course—the whispers of the Heartless Prince. Alexander, the son of King Elijah of Avalon, was a name spoken with both reverence and fear. It was said that his power was both terrifying and uncontrollable, that his cold demeanor and ruthless nature made him a force to be reckoned with. Noelle had grown up hearing stories of the prince’s monstrous strength, his ability to defeat entire armies with his bare hands, and his inability to connect with anyone, even his own people. The villagers spoke of him in hushed tones, as though his very name brought a chill to the air. Curiosity overtook Noelle’s caution, and she found herself drifting toward the center of the square where the procession had stopped. She stood on the outskirts of the crowd, hidden from view, her heart racing with anticipation. Her fingers tightened around the basket as she tried to glimpse the man who had been the subject of so many terrifying tales. The prince emerged from the carriage, tall and imposing, his dark cloak sweeping behind him as he stood in the sunlight. His face was sharp, his features carved with a coldness that matched the rumors surrounding him. His eyes—pale and unreadable—scanned the crowd with a detached indifference. He moved with an aura of authority, as if the world was merely a place he passed through without care. The villagers stepped back, their fear palpable as they avoided his gaze. Noelle, however, could not tear her eyes away. She saw the way the crowd recoiled from him, as though they were afraid of the very air he breathed. And yet, despite his chilling presence, there was something about him that intrigued her. Behind that frozen exterior, behind the layers of power and distance, Noelle sensed something more. A shadow of vulnerability, a flicker of something raw beneath the surface. Her mind raced, but before she could analyze it further, a voice broke through her thoughts. “Noelle!” It was her mother, calling from their stall at the edge of the square. “Come here at once!” Reluctantly, Noelle turned away from the prince, her gaze lingering for a moment longer. As she walked back to her mother, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the prince’s presence had changed her, that somehow their paths were now entwined in ways she could not understand. Her mother, a kind and gentle woman, looked at her with concern as Noelle approached. “What are you doing out there, child? You’ve seen enough of the prince and his men. They are not here for us, and I don’t trust them.” Noelle nodded, though her thoughts were far away. She knew her mother’s caution was well-founded. The royal family was a world apart from the simple lives of the people in Eldoria. And yet, there was something compelling about Alexander, something that made Noelle feel as though the life she had always known might soon be upended. As they made their way home, Noelle’s mind kept returning to the prince. The Heartless Prince. She had heard the stories, but seeing him in person was something entirely different. She couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward him, the strange sensation that their fates were somehow connected. What was it that made him so cold? What lay beneath that hard exterior, beneath the fearsome rumors? Noelle didn’t have the answers, but something deep inside told her that she would soon find out. --- End of Chapter 1
