Chapter One: Silent Ache
Leo sat at the back of the classroom, his eyes quietly tracing Nina as she flipped through her notebook. Every movement, every tilt of her head, every small laugh made his chest tighten. She was breathtaking — someone you could stare at for hours and still find something new to love.
He whispered under his breath, “You’re really amazing at this, Nina,” hoping she wouldn’t hear. She glanced up briefly, a faint smile tugging at her lips, and then returned to her work. Why do I feel like I’m already losing her? he thought, though he couldn’t explain it.
The classroom door opened. Professor Adrian strode in, dark eyes immediately finding Nina. Leo felt a sharp twist in his chest as he noticed the way Adrian’s gaze lingered, how every glance seemed to measure her, to pull her into a world Leo could never reach.
The lesson began, but Leo couldn’t concentrate. Every subtle smile, every laugh, every tilt of Nina’s head toward Adrian felt like a knife twisting in his chest. She was too innocent, too kind, too unaware of the storm she was stirring in him.
Later, Adrian asked Nina to stay behind. Leo lingered near the door, pretending to gather his things. From the small crack, he watched silently. Adrian’s voice was low, teasing, magnetic.
“You make it very difficult to focus, Nina,” Adrian said, leaning slightly closer. “You’re… distractingly talented.”
Nina’s cheeks flushed. “I… I’m just trying, sir.”
Adrian smiled faintly. “Trying isn’t enough. You deserve more… more recognition, more opportunity. And you’re wasting it here if you don’t pay attention.”
Their hands brushed briefly over a notebook. Nina’s breath caught. She laughed nervously, biting her lip. Leo’s chest felt like it would shatter. He only watched, every brush of her lips against Adrian cutting him deeper than any blade.
When she finally returned to the classroom, cheeks flushed and hair falling perfectly, Leo sank into his seat, heart pounding. His mind raced, flashes of all he had done for her storming through him: the meals he had skipped, the nights he had stayed up helping her study, the small jobs he had done just to buy her books, every silent sacrifice he had made.
All of this… and she’s here, smiling at another man.
His hands clenched in his lap. The ache was unbearable — pride and longing and jealousy twisting together. He wanted to call her name, to pull her into his arms, to remind her of all he had given, all he had waited for… but he couldn’t. Not yet.
Nina settled into her seat, trying to focus on her notebook, but her mind swirled with Adrian’s words. Maybe he’s right… maybe I could be more than this, she thought, a pang of guilt for Leo twisting her heart.
The bell rang. Nina packed slowly, hesitation written in every movement. She glanced toward the door, almost expecting someone — and Leo’s heart sank as he saw Adrian’s shadow appear first.
He had waited for her, sacrificed for her, loved her quietly…
And now, he watched silently, every glance and smile toward another man a knife twisting in his heart.
