Nineteen-year-old Kaelen sees and speaks to ghosts. In a village that burns magic-wielders, it’s a secret that could get her killed. Silence has kept her alive — until now.

The ancient Scepter of the Fallen Empire chooses her. But it offers no power. It opens a door to Purgatory, the grey realm of unfinished souls. The ghosts beg her to open it wider.

Kaelen doesn’t know the truth. The Scepter isn’t just a key to the dead. It’s a key to the Leviathan — an ancient beast of chaos sealed by God Himself. Every ghost she frees feeds it. Every door brings it closer to waking.

With Dorian Vex, a cursed outcast who’s been waiting for her, Kaelen must choose: free the Leviathan and doom the world, or seal the door forever and lose every ghost she’s ever loved. Some doors, once opened, can never be closed.

THE SCEPTER Book One of The God-Queen Trilogy by Mirah CONTENTS PART ONE: THE AWAKENING Chapter One — The Weight of the Dead Kaelen is called to the temple by the High Priestess Vesper. She touches the ancient Scepter and is transported to Purgatory — the grey realm of the dead. She sees a massive door, hears a voice call her name, and glimpses something ancient and hungry behind it. A mysterious stranger watches from the shadows. He is Dorian Vex, and he has been waiting for her. Chapter Two — The Warden's Son Kaelen confronts Dorian Vex. He reveals his curse: he is bound to walk the living world, unable to die, unable to return to Purgatory. He warns her that the Scepter is not a crown — it is a key. Kaelen refuses to believe him. But the ghosts whisper otherwise. Chapter Three — Whispers in the Dark Ghosts swarm Kaelen, begging her to open the door wider. Lyra, her closest ghost companion, reveals a terrible secret: not all ghosts are honest. Some serve the Hollow King. Some want Kaelen to open the door — no matter the cost. Chapter Four — The Shadow Court The Shadow Court arrives at Ashfall's border. Kaelen sees their leader — and recognizes him. He was once a ghost she trusted. Now he serves the Hollow King, and he wants the Scepter. Chapter Five — The First Door Kaelen opens the Scepter to save a dying child. A ghost escapes Purgatory — but something else stirs behind the door. Something vast and hungry. The Leviathan takes its first breath. Chapter Six — The Cost Kaelen realizes she is losing her memories. She forgets her mother's face. The ghosts grow stronger. Dorian warns her that every use of the Scepter steals a piece of her humanity. She is becoming less human — and more ghost. Chapter Seven — Dorian's Secret Dorian confesses his darkest secret: he was once the Hollow King's heir. He almost opened the door before — and the Leviathan almost woke. He stopped himself at the last moment. But the Hollow King cursed him for his defiance. He cannot die. He cannot return home. He is trapped between worlds forever — unless Kaelen can break his curse. Chapter Eight — Flight Ashfall falls to the Shadow Court. Kaelen and Dorian flee with the Scepter. The ghosts follow. The Hollow King watches from Purgatory — and smiles. PART TWO: THE REALM OF THE DEAD Chapter Nine — The Grey Road Kaelen and Dorian travel through the borderlands between worlds. Ghosts attack them — not all are friendly. Kaelen's power grows stronger, but so does the Scepter's hold on her. Chapter Ten — The Truthseer's Burden Kaelen's ability to see the unknown reveals Dorian's deepest fear: he is falling in love with her, and it will cost him everything. She sees his secret — and he sees hers. They cannot hide from each other any longer. Chapter Eleven — The Hollow King's Throne Kaelen dreams of Purgatory. She sees the Hollow King — and he sees her. He offers her a deal: open the door, and he will release every ghost she loves. She wakes screaming. Chapter Twelve — The Ghost Army The Shadow Court corners them. Kaelen summons an army of ghosts to defend them. The battle is brutal. The Leviathan stirs, awakened by the bloodshed. Chapter Thirteen — The Betrayer One of Kaelen's trusted ghosts betrays her to the Shadow Court. Dorian is captured. Kaelen is left alone, the Scepter in her hand, the ghosts at her command. Chapter Fourteen — The Rescue Kaelen storms the Shadow Court's camp alone. She unleashes the full power of the Scepter — and opens the door wider than ever before. The Leviathan roars. The Hollow King laughs. And Kaelen realizes she is no longer in control. PART THREE: THE LEVIATHAN Chapter Fifteen — The Revelation Kaelen discovers the truth. The ghosts she's been freeing aren't crossing to the afterlife — they're feeding the Leviathan. Every soul she has freed has made the beast stronger. She has been waking it. The weight of her guilt crushes her. Chapter Sixteen — The Weight of Guilt Kaelen falls apart. Dorian holds her together. He reveals the full history of the Leviathan — a beast of chaos and hunger, sealed by God Himself at the dawn of time. He tells her why it was sealed: it nearly unmade creation. And if it wakes again, nothing will stop it. Chapter Seventeen — The Hollow King's Offer The Hollow King offers Kaelen a deal: free the Leviathan, and he will release every ghost she loves. The cost: the living world. Kaelen is tempted. The ghosts beg her to accept. Dorian begs her to refuse. Chapter Eighteen — The Scepter's Hunger The Scepter begins to take control of Kaelen. She sees the Leviathan clearly for the first time — vast, ancient, terrible — and it sees her. It speaks her name. It hungers for her. Chapter Nineteen — The Army of the Dead The Hollow King raises an army of the dead to attack the living world. Kaelen must stop him — or join him. The ghosts are divided. Some fight for her. Some fight against her. Chapter Twenty — The Choice Kaelen stands before the door. The ghosts beg her to open it. Dorian begs her to seal it. The Leviathan calls her name. She must choose. And her choice will change everything. PART FOUR: THE GOD-QUEEN'S RECKONING Chapter Twenty-One — The Door Kaelen makes her choice. She opens the door — but not to free the Leviathan. She steps into Purgatory alone. The ghosts scream. Dorian watches helplessly as she disappears into the realm of the dead. Chapter Twenty-Two — The Throne of Bones Kaelen confronts the Hollow King. She claims the throne of Purgatory — becoming the new God-Queen of the Dead. The Hollow King is destroyed. But the cost is steep: she is bound to Purgatory forever. Chapter Twenty-Three — The Chain Kaelen uses her new power to chain the Leviathan. She binds it with iron, shadow, and bone. But the cost is devastating: she becomes the new Warden of Purgatory. She cannot leave. The dead are hers to command. Chapter Twenty-Four — The Sacrifice Kaelen must choose: stay in Purgatory forever as its queen, or return to the living world and let the Leviathan wake. Dorian begs her to stay with him in the living world. But she knows what she must do. Chapter Twenty-Five — The Breaking Dorian sacrifices his curse to free Kaelen from Purgatory. He offers his soul to the Scepter in exchange for her freedom. He dies — but his soul is bound to the Scepter, becoming a ghost. His final words: "Rule well, my queen." Chapter Twenty-Six — The God-Queen Kaelen returns to the living world as the God-Queen of Purgatory. She rules both realms — the living and the dead. But the cost is her humanity. She is no longer fully alive. She is no longer fully dead. She is something new. Something terrible. Something magnificent. Chapter Twenty-Seven — The Whisper The final chapter. Kaelen sits on her throne, the Scepter in her hand, the ghosts at her command. She hears Dorian's voice — and the Leviathan stirs once more. The war is not over. It has only just begun.
