Chapter 1
Lori steps out of her car reluctantly outside her parents house bracing herself to explain everything to them. she slowly walks to the door and takes the deep breath before knocking. she knocks on the door and waits patiently.
she hears her mother yell "coming!". a few moments later her mother opens the door and says "Lori!". she quickly embraces her mother. "James! come here. Lori's home." her mother says as they walk to the living room.
her dad comes in from the kitchen and embraces her. "well isn't this a surprise. what's the occasion?" her father asks. "Dad can we sit down please." Lori says in a calm soothing voice. they all take a seat on the couch as Lori begins to say "I am moving back. I bought a house here in town. the old Miller place". "where's your husband dear?" her mother asks. "that's what I needed to talk to you about Mom. he cheated on me with his secretary." her dad gets up and starts to walk to the cabinet on the wall that is holding his shotgun and says "sounds like I need to pay that man a little visit." "James sit down." her mother says. "I divorced him dad. I signed the papers yesterday. karma will get him dad. please do not overreact and do something that you will end up regretting. he isn't worth it." "you're right dear. I'm sorry no one deserves to go through that. I'm glad you're home. would you like some dinner? we were just finishing up a roast. it is Sunday after all. your brother and sister should be here soon. we still do family dinners every Sunday and now that you're home you can come." "that sounds amazing mom. thank you. I'm going to go grab some stuff out of my car real quick and go freshen up." "sounds good sweetheart. dinner will be ready at about 5:30."
Lori goes out to her black Mercedes and grabs her suitcase out of the back. on her way back in she takes a moment to look at her old neighborhood. looking at her family's house she sees the old tree in the yard that still has the tire swing that she used to play on as a child which her favorite dog from her childhood is buried under and she briefly remember playing with him in the yard. and then she turns looking at the house a modest little family home of the color blue with white shutters in a little white picket fence.
she's slowly walks back into the house and up the stairs and goes back to her old bedroom and lays her suitcase on her old bed. she shifts through the clothes inside and pulls her favorite black blouse in blue jeans and slips off to the bathroom to shower. after her shower she quickly blow dry her beautiful red long hair. then she looks at herself in the mirror and tries her best to smile at her own reflection. she looks into her dark emerald green eyes and even she can see the hurt in her own soul.
she takes out her makeup bag in scoffs at her own freckles as she goes to cover them with makeup. she slowly contours her face to change it's shape slightly and then does her best to cover up the bags under her eyes with concealer after the good cry that she just had in that shower. she had some blush to her cheeks to bring out the life. then she takes her favorite I shadow and does her classic little smokey eye with her winged eyeliner. she curls her eyelashes and implies the darkest mascara she could have found. then she slowly applies her final touch her red lipstick. she steps back and looks at herself for a moment feeling a little bit better. she smiles at herself for the first time in weeks since she caught her husband and Vanessa together. she literally sprays herself and her favorite perfume which smells like vanilla and berries.
As she goes to walk out of the bathroom she hears the front door open downstairs and her brother Owen and sister Avery walk inside. she hears Owen ask her mother "who's fancy car is that outside? are we losing the house?" he jokes.
Lori begins her way down the stairs and before she's even halfway down she hears her mother say "Lori has come home." before she can even respond she hears her brother hurrying his way to the bottom of the stairs and she is greeted by his smiling face right whenever she goes to reach the bottom. he quickly embraces her a little too tight. "ow bub you're squeezing a little too tight." "well maybe if you came home more often I wouldn't feel the need to hug you as tight." Owen says as he pulls away and smiles. "well we will all talk about that after dinner." Lori says as she walks past him and into the dining room to take her seat.
her sister Avery emerges from the kitchen and says "hey Lori. finally coming home to stay are we?" their mother yells from the kitchen "Avery leave her alone we will talk about everything after we eat." Avery does a disgruntled growl as she goes to sit in her seat.
their parents come out of the kitchen carrying the food, setting it all on the table ready to go. "go ahead and make your plates everyone." their dad says. everyone's silently fills their plates and begins to eat in silence all anticipating the conversation after dinner.
when they have finally finished eating they all migrate to the living room. Lori takes a moment to look around to see that almost nothing has changed. all of her and her siblings awards still set on the mantle above the fireplace and all of their old family pictures are still hung in the same spots on the wall.
finally after everyone is seated their mother says "okay Lori you said you wanted to talk to everyone after dinner so here we are. Avery please be on your best behavior." Avery scoffs after being called out.
Lori slowly begins to explain everything. "well as I have already told Mom and Dad I am moving back here in town. I bought the old Miller place."
"that place is really nice. let me know if you need help with any renovations. remember I run my own construction company and I will help you free of charge" her brother Owen interjects.
"thank you bub. I might take you up on that but I will definitely pay you. no arguing about it. now back to what I was saying. before anyone can ask where my husband is like Mom did earlier. no offense mom. it was definitely a warranted question. I divorced Tony yesterday. I caught him cheating on me with his floozy secretary Vanessa. which honestly I think I should have seen coming a mile away. he willingly gave me half of everything that I wanted. he didn't even fight the divorce."
"I'm so sorry sis. you deserved better than that scumbag anyway. did Dad threaten to shoot him?" Owen says solemnly with slight laughter in his deep voice at the end.
"yes he immediately went for the gun cabinet." their mother says trying to suppress a chuckle. "sounds just like him" Owen says with a laugh.
"it's about time you manned end up and left the bastard. everyone knew he was no good. I can't believe you even married Tony Capone. you do know that his uncle literally threatened to kill President Kennedy right? he didn't come from good blood dear." Avery says with a slight snobbiness in her voice.
"Avery watch your tone." their mother says. "it's okay Mom that's all I really had to say to her right now anyway. I will check in on you guys in a little bit I'm going to head to my house to get settled in the movers will be there in about 30 minutes anyway. I love you all. I'm glad I'm back home." Lori says that she gets up and hugs each one before she leaves.
