Chapter 1 The Ring in the Wine Glass
"Don't make a scene, Elena."
Dante kept the warning between us. He was too busy watching the bosses around the table, counting bows and noting who looked away.
At the highest syndicate summit of the year, he had seated Chloe at the main table for every family to see.
I watched Chloe's hand on his arm. My late mother's matriarch ring sat on her finger, its Rossi ruby bright under the chandelier.
That ring passed from one Rossi matriarch to the next. Dante had taken it from the family vault and given it to a woman with no claim to our name.
Chloe lowered her chin for the people watching, though her hand remained on Dante's sleeve. "Dante insisted," she said. "He said the family needs a visible queen."
A visible queen. I had secured every vote that made Dante Don. The men at this table called him for permission, then waited while he called me for the answer.
From the back room, I had made the erasing easy for him.
"She's right," Dante said. "We need to project unity. Your sulking undermines me."
Jealousy. That was all he had heard.
A waiter came over with champagne. Dante waved the bottle away. "Still water for her. No bubbles."
He remembered that much. I drank still water at summits so I could catch what everyone else missed.
An hour earlier, he had bent close and asked, "Did you triple-check the security routes for the port deal? I trust your eyes more than anyone's." As always, he waited for my answer before signing.
He wanted my judgment. He just didn't want anyone to know it was mine.
Dante turned to Chloe and adjusted the heavy ruby on her finger, rotating it until the stone faced the room. "Keep it on. It looks like it was made for you."
I looked at his hand, then at the ring. He knew what it meant. I had explained the succession rites when we became engaged.
I stopped waiting for an explanation.
I pulled off my engagement ring. The diamond was large enough to draw every eye at the table, exactly as Dante had intended when he bought it.
He had always pointed to its size when he wanted to prove how much he loved me.
Now it sat cold and heavy in my palm.
His expression tightened. "Elena, I warned you."
I held the ring over his wine and opened my fingers.
The diamond struck the glass with a small *plink* and settled at the bottom. Red wine closed over it, leaving a pale flash beneath the surface whenever the chandelier caught the glass.
Someone at the table sucked in a breath. Two of Dante's allies stopped whispering and stared at the ring in his wine.
Dante gripped the stem hard enough to tip the glass. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
I pushed in my chair and looked past the minor bosses and nervous allies to the far corner.
Victor 'The Ghost' Moretti sat alone, well away from the men fighting for Dante's attention. Our families were sworn enemies, and he was the only man in the city Dante handled carefully.
Victor had watched the whole exchange without touching his drink. When our eyes met, he gave me one short nod. The seat beside him was empty.
"Elena, sit down," Dante snapped. "That's an order."
I laughed, pushed my engagement ring farther from mind, and walked away from Dante's table. Conversations died as I crossed the room, one table after another.
Victor's chair scraped across the floor as I approached. Behind me, Dante stopped shouting.
