“I hate football…” I grumbled as I watched the players line up. I had absolutely no idea what was happening, maybe that’s why I didn’t like it so much. I could see our stupid team out there with Jacek, and my nerves were already frayed. We were the first to have the ball it seemed, and next to Jacek was out quarterback Morrison who I have only met in passing. Gunner was at the line staring down our opponents. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Jacek. He looked so out of place on that field with his visible tattoo’s and lazy running posture. I held in a breath the moment they hiked the ball.
Morrison faked it to a guy named Lwei who acted like he was going to run the ball up the left side of the field, then handed it off to Jacek. He took off like a bullet. The linemen weren’t able to stop everyone as two of Darthwood’s players shot off after him.
Engulfed in the hype I jumped and shouted. “Run, babe! Run! Disappear on their asses!”
One of the players seemed abnormally fast, and I remembered that all the players were either Demi Gods or Immortals. So, it wasn’t surprising when players started using their abilities. Still, none of them had anything on my guy. Jacek took one more step and de-materialized. Even if someone caught him, no one could touch him. He stopped running when he entered the end-zone, and all around the students and parents cheered. I took a moment to look around. It was kind of nice to see Black Water High being normal. Like this I would have never thought everyone was so different from me.
I watched our kicker who’s name I didn’t know kick a perfect field goal before the players started switching in and out. Jacek went to sit down, but the coach pushed him back out onto the field.
“You’re the only one who can touch Darthwood’s quarterback, Lyle! Get the hell back out there and tackle his ass!” Coach Geldof yelled as he rubbed the back of his neck in aggravation.
I sighed a little as Jacek glanced back over his shoulder at me.
Don’t make that face, dolcezza. I’ll be fine.
His warm husky voice in my head always made me melt, but somehow this time it didn’t reassure me. If the coach played Jacek every time, he was going to get worn out. Without knowing it I chewed on my bottom lip as I watched Drax smirk over at Jacek. I could see him saying something, and I was sure it was in an attempt to rile Jacek up. I swallowed hard as they began to move. Jacek was fast, twisting around players to get to Drax who dematerialized when the ball was hiked. I watched as Jacek did the same slamming his entire body against Drax. The entire stadium went crazy, for the first time in two years Drax has been sacked. I jumped for joy as Jacek got back to his feet, this time I know for sure that the two of them were speaking to each other. I watched Drax’s hands ball into fists, whatever Jacek had just said struck a nerve.
This was going to be an exhausting game.
We were in the fourth quarter, and we were down by two points. The Coach was overly excited about the team doing so well this year, but there was something not sitting well in the back of my mind. I was now on edge, and tried my best to watch everything. Finally, the coach let Jacek sit down for a few minutes. I brought him over two cups of water, doing my best to keep from staring at him for too long.
Why do you look so worried?
I couldn’t help the smile on my lips when I heard Jacek’s husky voice in my head. “Because I am. I feel like something bad is going to happen to you.”
Jacek downed one of the cups, handing it back to me. I’ll be fine. No matter what it is.
“Yeah, that helped me feel so much better. Calmed my nerves just like that.” I said sarcastically, staring to the ground.
Dolcezza, everything will be okay. I promised you and your scary mother that I would never hurt you, I intend on keeping that promise. He said glancing over to me.
“Just…be careful. If you get hurt out on that field, I don’t know if I could stay away from you.” I took the second cup he downed before getting to my feet.
Who said I wanted you to stay away from me? That was your decision.
I spun around to glare at him. “For you. I did it for you.”
Jacek nodded. I know, but my father is probably half deep in a bottle of scotch by now. There is nothing you have to worry about.
My shoulders fell. “Jacek? Your dad, is he a…”
A drunk? Yeah, that’s the nicest thing about him. Jacek looked over to me, studying my face.
“I’m sorry, is that why you don’t want him knowing about me?” I asked quietly, throwing his used cups in the trash.
Jacek shrugged. That’s one of the reason’s. I just don’t trust him enough to allow him near you.
I smirked over to him. “Protective, are we?”
He glanced over and shook his head at me. It’s PTSD with all the s**t you’ve gotten yourself into. Trouble magnet.
“Here I was starting to think it was because you liked me.” I teased filling up more cups.
Who said I didn’t?
My eyes darted over to him, but he was looking back to the field. Cheeky. I knew my face was blushing as I crossed my legs. Keeping myself together around him was starting to get exhausting. Maybe I needed to take the initiative? It doesn’t seem like Jacek is going too.
All of a sudden, the water in the cups in front of me rose out of them, hovering a foot in the air. I rolled my eyes before turning to see Casey smiling over at me with Gwyneth and Hexic next to him.
“What’s wrong with you? We can see your glum face from all the way over here.” He said before gesturing for the water to return to the cups.
I went over to them so maybe Jacek wouldn’t hear me. “I’m worried about Jacek. I have this uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, like something is going to go wrong or Jacek is going to get hurt.”
Gwyneth sighed a little. “Did you tell him?”
I nodded. “Yeah, he’s not worried.”
“He’s a beast, Cairyn. I doubt there is anything that could take him down.” Casey said with a shrug.
I let out a deep breath. “I sure hope so.”
“You really like him.”
All three of us looked over to Hexic who blushed a deep red. Casey laughed, Gwyneth rubbed his back, and I raised an eyebrow at him as I smiled.
“Yeah, Hexic. I really do. Now, if only Jacek would realize it.” I huffed out as we all focused our attention back onto the field.
“Wait…why is Darthwood’s kicker out on the field?” Casey leaned forward on the railing.
I looked up to him before back to the field. “What the hell is that about?”
“Fishy.” Gwyneth scoffed.
“I don’t like this…” I said when goosebumps raced over my skin. It was the same feeling I was starting to get every night now. I would be doing whatever, and then bam. I would get a sickening feeling and my skin felt like it was uncomfortable. It was starting to worry me. “Jacek…please be careful.”
We watched as Morrison caught the hike He went to fake it to Jacek before throwing it down field. I hugged myself as I watched Darthwood’s kicker go right for Jacek. He looked over and went to push him away. The kicker grabbed onto Jacek’s arm and we watched as they both stopped moving for a second, then Jacek went down onto his knees right as our team scored a touchdown for the victory.
I was running towards him without hesitation.
“Jacek!” I screamed.
I reached them and threw myself into the kicker, releasing his grasp on Jacek’s arm. We tumbled to the ground, almost knocking the air out of my lungs. I recovered quickly though and crawled over to Jacek who was slumped over on his knees. I cupped his face in my hands and whimpered when he didn’t move.
“Jacek? Babe? Come on, look at me. Jacek?” I begged, finally lifting his head so I could see his face. His eyes were blacked out, like they usually do when he uses his abilities fully. My head snapped over in the direction of the kicker, my anger was now directed towards him. “What the hell did you do to him?!”
He was starting to get to his feet, but I was on him. I spartan kicked the side of his helmet and sent him back to the ground. I landed another kick to his side before I was wrapped up in strong arms.
“Cairyn, stop!”
It was Drax, and I thrashed against him. “Let me go!”
“I will, just calm down.” He said as my feet touched the ground again.
I moved back over to Jacek and felt a sad/anger tear slip down my left cheek. “Come on, babe. It’s me. I’m right here, come back.”
Unsure of how to get him back I glared over to Drax and his kicker. “Tell me how to get him out of this!”
The kicker raised his hands defensively. “I only put him in his own mind. I didn’t realize this guy was so f****d up in his head. He must have some deep emotion wounds for him to be stuck in there this long.”
“Get the f**k out of here!” I screamed at him, not even seeing Gwyneth, Casey, and Hexic coming up. “I don’t know what to do, Jacek. I’m just a stupid worthless human. I don’t know what to do.”
I bounced a little trying to think, but I couldn’t. I watched as his eyes seemed to tear up. No. I was not going to let Jacek spill one tear in front of everyone. No f*****g way in hell. I leaned forward and pressed my lips to his as my eyes closed, thinking about all the nice times we spent together and how many chances I had to do this exact thing. I wanted him to come back, no, I needed him to come back to me.
Then suddenly I felt a hand slip behind my head to pull me in tighter. I gasped, and Jacek took the advantage to enter my mouth and tease my tongue with his. We were so caught up in the moment that we forgot we were in the middle of the football field. I let out a light moan as my body was completely satisfied. Jacek chuckled a little before letting me pull away.
“Was that what it took for you to kiss me?” He asked sarcastically.
I panted as I shook my head at him. “You do that again and I’m going to hurt you before I kiss you.”
“Duly noted.” Jacek smirked as he gestured to our friends. “I think you broke them.”
I glanced over to see Casey with his mouth gaped open, Gwyneth had a massive smile on her face, while Hexic was blushing like the virgin herself was watching porn. I giggled before looking back to Jacek.
“Whoops, I think I did.” I gave him a wink. “Wanna see if a second kiss will send them running?”
He shook his head at me. Your impossible, dolcezza. Let’s do it then.
