The Woman Behind the Moon
Hailey
The cabin settles into silence again after the chaos of the night before, but it is no longer the same kind of silence I spent my life hiding inside.
Before, silence meant emptiness.
Isolation.
A reminder that no matter how many people surrounded me inside Ironclaw Pack, I still stood slightly apart from all of them, disconnected in ways they could never fully understand. Every howl I could not answer, every mind-link I could not hear, every shifted wolf running through the forests while I remained trapped in human skinit all built walls around me so slowly I stopped noticing them after a while.
But this silence feels different.
Alive.
The bond hums constantly beneath my skin now, low and steady like the rhythm of distant thunder before a storm fully arrives. I can feel each of them clearly without even trying, their emotions brushing against mine in soft, instinctive waves that make the world feel strangely crowded inside my own head.
Not unpleasant.
Just... overwhelming.
Rain taps softly against the broken cabin windows while cold mountain air drifts through the shattered glass in slow currents, carrying the scent of wet pine and ancient forest deep into the room. The fire in the corner crackles quietly, warm orange light dancing across rough wooden walls still scarred from the power surge that exploded through the cabin when Selene awakened fully inside me.
Part of me still cannot believe any of this is real.
Ancient bloodlines.Prophecies.The Moon Goddess.Four mates.
My wolf.
The thought alone nearly steals the breath from my lungs again.
My wolf.
For eighteen years there was only silence where she should have been, an emptiness so constant I eventually stopped allowing myself to hope for anything different. I trained harder because I had to. Fought harder because I needed to compensate. Learned to survive without depending on anyone because loneliness felt easier than disappointment.
And now
now she is here.
Not faintly.
Not distantly.
Fully awake.
Selene rests deep inside my consciousness like moonlight stretched across dark water, ancient and impossibly powerful, her presence wrapping around my soul with a warmth so fierce it almost hurts.
Not because it is painful.
Because it fills parts of me that have been empty my entire life.
A quiet movement beside me pulls my attention back to the room itself.
Rider sits on the edge of the bed beside me, close enough that warmth radiates steadily from him through the blankets tangled around us both. His forearms rest against his knees, broad shoulders slightly hunched forward as he watches the rain outside through the shattered remains of the cabin window.
Watching.
Listening.
Guarding.
The bond allows me to feel the exact moment he notices I am awake.
Relief unfolds through him instantly, sharp enough that it brushes directly against my chest before he even turns his head toward me physically. The emotion catches me off guard because it is so genuine, so immediate, so instinctive that there is no room for pretending otherwise.
"There you are," he says quietly.
His voice sounds rough this morning, deeper than usual with exhaustion. Like he has not slept properly. Like he spent most of the night listening for every shift in my breathing.
The thought does something deeply dangerous to my heart.
I study him properly for the first time since waking.
Dark hair slightly damp from rain or river mist.Scratches lining one side of his throat.Dried blood staining the sleeve of his shirt.Eyes shadowed with exhaustion despite the calm expression he tries to maintain.
He stayed awake protecting me.
Again.
"You stayed here all night."
The words slip out before I can stop them.
Something soft flickers briefly across his face.
"Of course I did."
No hesitation.
No embarrassment.
No attempt to make it sound less important than it is.
As though remaining beside me was the most natural thing in the world.
Gods.
I do not know how to survive people caring about me this much.
The bond pulses warmly at the thought, and Rider's gaze sharpens slightly as though he felt it too.
Which he probably did.
Wonderful.
No emotional privacy anymore.
I push myself upright slowly against the pillows, trying unsuccessfully to ignore both the pain in my injured arm and the dangerous warmth spreading through my chest every time Rider looks at me too carefully.
The movement immediately shifts his attention fully toward me.
"How bad does it hurt?"
I glance down toward the thick bandages wrapped around my arm before shrugging weakly.
"I've had worse."
One dark eyebrow lifts immediately.
"That was not the question."
I glare at him.
"Why are all of you so annoyingly observant?"
"The mate bond helps."
"That feels unfair."
A faint smile touches the corner of his mouth.
"It probably is."
Despite everythingthe prophecy, the grief, the fear curling constantly beneath my ribsI feel my own mouth twitch slightly in response.
Dangerous.
Every single one of these men is emotionally dangerous.
Before either of us can speak again, the cabin door creaks softly open.
Asher steps inside first, rainwater glistening faintly across the shoulders of his dark jacket as cold air follows him into the room. His expression remains calm and controlled as always, but the moment his amber eyes settle on me, I feel the exact second relief moves through him beneath the surface.
Quiet.Grounded.Deep.
Unlike Zane's emotions, which explode through the bond like lightning strikes, Asher's feelings move more slowly. Steadier. Like roots spreading beneath earth.
But they are there.
All of them are there now.
Watching me.Worrying about me.Protecting me.
The thought still feels unreal.
Behind Asher enters Dr Elara.
The moment I see her, something deep inside both me and Selene stills completely.
Recognition.
Not conscious.
Instinctive.
Dr Elara closes the cabin door quietly behind her before crossing slowly toward the bed, carrying a worn leather medical bag beneath one arm. She looks exactly the same as she always hassoft silver-grey eyes, dark curls pinned neatly back from her face, calm movements carrying the quiet confidence of someone who has spent decades healing wounds most people could never survive.
Except now
now I can see it.
Magic.
It hums beneath her skin faintly, hidden carefully beneath layers and layers of restraint so subtle I never noticed it before Selene awakened.
But now?
Now it feels obvious.
Ancient power recognises ancient power.
My pulse quickens slightly.
"You're not just a doctor."
The words leave my mouth quietly, but the moment they do, the entire cabin changes.
Rider stills beside me instantly.
Asher's focus sharpens near the doorway.
Even the air itself seems to tighten.
Dr Elara exhales softly.
Not frightened.
Tired.
"Well," she murmurs quietly as she sets the medical bag carefully onto the nearby table, "I suppose there is little point pretending otherwise anymore."
The calmness of her response unsettles me more than denial would have.
Because she already knew this moment would come.
"How are you feeling, sweet girl?" she asks gently as she moves toward the bed.
The question should feel simple.
It doesn't.
How am I feeling?
I discovered my wolf is literally tied to the Moon Goddess. My parents died protecting an ancient prophecy.I apparently carry the last surviving bloodline of a magical kingdom everyone thought was extinct. And somehow, impossibly, I am mated to all four future Alphas standing guard around me like wolves protecting something sacred.
Honestly?
"I feel like I may actually be losing my mind," I answer weakly.
To my surprise, Dr Elara smiles softly.
"Good," she says. "That means you are still processing things normally."
I blink at her.
"That is your definition of normal?"
"After several centuries?" she says dryly. "More or less."
The cabin goes silent.
Several centuries.
My breath catches.
"You're serious."
Dr Elara's silver eyes meet mine fully now, and for the first time since I have known her, I see the truth hidden behind them.
Age.
Not physical age.
Ancientness.
Wisdom so old it feels heavy.
"Yes," she says quietly. "I am serious."
She lowers herself slowly into the chair beside the bed before folding her hands carefully in her lap.
"I was sent here long before you were born, Hailey," she says softly. "Long before Alpha Darius ever became leader of Ironclaw. Long before the kingdoms forgot the truth about the Silvermoon bloodline."
The name alone sends a pulse through Selene inside me.
Silvermoon.
My bloodline.
My family.
"I served your mother before the witches found her," Dr Elara continues quietly, and suddenly the entire room feels too small to breathe inside.
Tears burn instantly behind my eyes.
"You knew them."
"I loved them," she corrects gently.
The emotion in her voice nearly breaks me immediately.
"She was one of the kindest women I have ever known," Dr Elara says softly, eyes distant with memory now. "Strong enough to fight armies, yet gentle enough to heal frightened children with a touch. Your father worshipped her completely."
Something sharp twists painfully through my chest.
Because they were real.
Not just visions.
Not myths.
People.
My people.
"They knew the witches were hunting them long before the attack happened," Dr Elara says quietly. "The Silvermoon line had been hiding for generations by then, surviving through secrecy, through scattered bloodlines, through silence."
Her gaze lifts toward me again.
"But your birth changed everything."
The room stills.
"Why?"
Dr Elara hesitates briefly.
Then
"Because you were the first true Silvermoon heir born in almost a thousand years."
Even the bond goes silent after that.
"She knew it the moment she held you," Dr Elara continues softly. "Your mother said the moon itself reacted when you were born. The power surrounding you was unlike anything she had ever felt before."
Selene stirs quietly beneath my skin.
Memory.
Grief.
Love.
"The witches sensed it too," Dr Elara says. "And once they realised the prophecy might finally awaken through you... they began hunting your family openly."
My throat tightens painfully.
"So my parents ran."
"They protected you."
The correction is immediate.
Gentle.
But firm.
Dr Elara's silver eyes shine faintly now beneath the firelight.
"The night they brought you to the ruins, your mother begged me to keep you hidden long enough for your wolf to awaken safely. She knew the magic sealing Selene inside you would suppress your shift for years."
Not broken.
Hidden.
Protected.
The truth still hurts.
But differently now.
"She left me there," I whisper weakly.
Dr Elara's expression softens completely.
"She left you somewhere sacred," she says quietly. "Somewhere ancient magic could conceal you from the witches long enough for destiny to catch up."
Tears slide silently down my face now.
Because I finally understand.
My mother did not abandon me.
She sacrificed everything she loved to give me a chance to survive.
And somehow
that hurts even more.
Silence fills the cabin heavily after that until Asher finally speaks from near the doorway.
"You expected her awakening eventually."
"Yes."
"And the mate bond?" Rider asks quietly beside me.
For the first time since entering the room
Dr Elara looks genuinely unsettled.
"No," she admits softly.
The bond flickers sharply at that.
"I knew the prophecy spoke of four guardians tied to the Silvermoon heir," she says carefully. "But nowhere in the ancient texts did it state the Moon Goddess intended all four brothers to become her mates simultaneously."
Even Selene stills inside me at those words.
Dr Elara studies all of us carefully now, her ancient silver eyes moving slowly between the four men surrounding me protectively.
"I have witnessed powerful mate bonds before," she says softly. "I have seen kingdoms rise and collapse beneath the strength of destiny."
Her gaze returns to me fully.
"But this?"
Something almost awed enters her expression.
"This has never happened before."
