Chapter 34

1383 Words
The Veil Awakens Hailey "And now they're coming." The words settle heavily over the hall, stealing the warmth from the room so completely that even the crackling fire burning in the massive stone fireplace suddenly seems distant. For several long seconds, nobody speaks. Nobody moves. The ancient fortress feels impossibly quiet. I stare at Alpha Theron while my pulse pounds loudly in my ears, trying to process what he just said. The witches found me. Not the bloodline. Not the prophecy. Me. A strange numbness settles over my chest. For months, maybe years, I had imagined that if I ever learned the truth about my parents' deaths, it would somehow make everything clearer. It doesn't. If anything, it makes everything worse. Because now I know they didn't die because they were unlucky. They died because someone or something hunted them. Someone wanted them dead badly enough to chase them across kingdoms. Badly enough to murder an entire bloodline. Selene stirs beneath my skin. Not fear. Anger. Ancient, cold anger. The kind that has waited centuries for justice. "Who are they?" I ask quietly. My voice sounds strange to my own ears. Small. Alpha Theron studies me carefully before answering. "The Veil is older than most packs." The room grows even quieter. "They existed before the Great Sundering. Before the ancient kingdoms collapsed. Before wolves turned against one another." He begins walking slowly toward one of the murals lining the wall. A mural depicting wolves and humans standing together beneath a silver moon. "Originally, they were guardians of magical knowledge." His expression darkens. "Then they became obsessed with controlling it." Kael Fenrir grows still. Listening. Watching. Learning. The witches have always been stories. Warnings. Legends used to teach young wolves caution. But now those stories have become real. And real enemies can bleed. Alpha Theron stops before another mural. This one depicts women cloaked in black standing around a circle of silver fire. "The Veil believes power should belong to those capable of wielding magic. They view the Moon Goddess as a failed ruler who abandoned the world after the Great Sundering." The temperature in the room seems to drop. "They spent centuries collecting ancient artifacts, forbidden knowledge, and bloodline secrets. Eventually they discovered the prophecy." Every wolf in the room understands immediately which prophecy he means. Hailey's. The Silvermoon prophecy. "The moment they learned a Silvermoon heir would eventually return, they began hunting every descendant they could find." I glance toward Hailey. She has gone completely still. Hailey The room feels too small. Too warm. Too loud. "They murdered them." Nobody answers. They don't need to. I already know. The truth sits plainly on every face around me. "They murdered my family." My voice breaks slightly. The words sound unreal. Like they belong to someone else's life. Alpha Theron nods slowly. "Yes." The single word hits harder than anything else. Not because it surprises me. Because it confirms what I already knew. My parents never had a chance. They spent their lives running. Hiding. Protecting me. And it still wasn't enough. Something sharp twists painfully inside my chest. Then something else follows. Anger. Not sadness. Not grief. Anger. For eighteen years I thought I was broken. For eighteen years I believed my wolf never came because there was something wrong with me. For eighteen years I wondered why I felt different. Alone. Incomplete. And now I discover that strangers stole everything from me before I was even old enough to understand what had been taken. The silver beneath my skin begins glowing softly. The room immediately notices. The runes carved into the stone walls flicker in response. Wind stirs through the hall despite every door and window being closed. Selene rises. They hunted our children. The voice inside my soul is no longer calm. It is furious. Ancient. Terrible. They spilled innocent blood beneath sacred moons. The silver brightens. A glass on a nearby table cracks. The entire room freezes. Rider Sirocco instantly surges forward. Protect. Not from her. For her. I move before thinking. One second I'm standing near the wall. The next I'm beside her. My hand closes gently around hers. Immediately the power stabilizes. Not completely. But enough. Hailey blinks rapidly. As though waking from somewhere far away. Her gaze lifts toward mine. Pain. Gods. The pain in her eyes nearly destroys me. "They took everything," she whispers. The words hit every one of us through the bond. Not dramatically. Not violently. Honestly. And somehow that hurts more. Asher Something doesn't fit. The thought has been bothering me since Ironclaw. Now it refuses to leave. "Alpha Darius." The room turns toward me. Hailey straightens slightly. "What about him?" I exchange a brief look with my brothers. They noticed it too. Good. I wasn't imagining things. "He knew something." The silence that follows is immediate. Dangerous. "He wasn't surprised," I continue. "The moment your power appeared, he recognized it." Alpha Theron's expression darkens. Interesting. He isn't surprised either. "You've suspected him." Not a question. The older Alpha exhales slowly. "For years." Hailey's eyes widen. "What?" Alpha Theron folds his arms. "Bloodmoon has monitored unusual magical activity around Ironclaw territory for almost a decade." A chill runs through the room. "We never had proof. Only fragments. Strange disappearances. Ancient artifacts vanishing. Reports of dark rituals being performed near abandoned ruins." Selene stirs uneasily. Dark magic. The words alone feel wrong. Wrong in the same way rotting flesh smells wrong. Something unnatural. Something corrupted. "And Darius?" Kael asks. "We suspected someone inside Ironclaw was involved." Alpha Theron's gaze hardens. "After today, I think we know who." The realization settles heavily over all of us. Alpha Darius wasn't simply afraid. He wanted something. Hailey. Her power. The Silvermoon bloodline. Hailey The thought makes me sick. Every memory suddenly feels different. Every conversation. Every compliment. Every training evaluation. How long had he been watching me? How long had he known? The questions churn endlessly through my mind. Then Alpha Theron says something that makes my entire body tense. "There is another problem." Wonderful. I am beginning to hate those words. The older Alpha looks directly at me. "The Veil knows who you are." I nod slowly. "We established that." "No." His expression remains serious. "You don't understand." Unease curls through my stomach. "What am I not understanding?" The room grows quiet again. "The awakening accelerated the mate bond." Heat immediately floods my face. Beside me, Zane looks far too interested in this conversation. Traitor. Alpha Theron continues. "Your connection to the brothers strengthens your power. Their connection to you strengthens theirs." I suddenly don't like where this is going. "The bond needs to be completed." Silence. Complete silence. Even the fire seems to stop crackling. Then: "What exactly does that mean?" I ask cautiously. Zane immediately grins. Oh no. Absolutely not. Kael closes his eyes briefly. Asher looks like he wants to throw Zane through a wall. Rider becomes very interested in the opposite side of the room. The reaction alone tells me everything I need to know. Heat floods my face harder. "I hate all of you." "I haven't even said anything yet," Zane protests. "Your face said enough." Lila, who has been suspiciously quiet until now, suddenly appears from nowhere. "Oh, are we talking about the mating bond?" I consider throwing myself off the nearest cliff. Alpha Theron The laughter dies quickly. Because it needs to. There will be time for joy later. Perhaps. But not now. A sharp knock echoes through the hall. Then another. Urgent. Every warrior in the room immediately turns toward the doors. A Bloodmoon scout rushes inside. Mud covers his boots. Rain drenches his clothes. His face is pale. Fear radiates from him. My wolf instantly rises. Something is wrong. Very wrong. "Alpha." The young warrior struggles to catch his breath. The entire hall falls silent. "What happened?" I ask. The scout swallows hard. Then looks directly at me. "Scouts returned from the eastern border an hour ago." A terrible feeling settles into my chest. "They found signs of movement in the mountains." Nobody moves. Nobody breathes. The scout's voice drops lower. "There were dozens of them." My wolf snarls. The room tenses. And then the scout delivers the words everyone was already fearing. "The Veil is here."
