Chapter 35

The Serpent's Bargain Alpha Darius The moment the doors to his private chambers slammed shut behind him, Alpha Darius lost what little control remained. A crystal decanter exploded against the stone wall. Dark liquid splattered across ancient maps and shelves lined with books collected over decades. The sound echoed violently through the room. Still, it wasn't enough. The humiliation burned too deeply. The memory replayed itself again and again inside his mind. Standing in the Ironclaw courtyard. His own warriors watching. His authority challenged. His commands ignored. And worst of all the four heirs of Bloodmoon openly defying him before an entire pack. His hands clenched into fists. The veins beneath his skin pulsed with barely restrained fury. "She is our future Luna." Kael's words echoed relentlessly through his thoughts. The arrogance. The certainty. The confidence of a man who knew he could back up every threat he made. Darius growled low in his throat. For years he had waited. Watched. Studied. Prepared. And now, just as the final piece of the prophecy had fallen into place, she had been taken from him. Hailey. The Silvermoon heir. The most valuable bloodline in existence. The key to power beyond anything modern Alphas could comprehend. And she had slipped through his fingers. The thought made something dark twist violently inside his chest. No. Not slipped away. Stolen. His gaze shifted toward the storm raging beyond the windows. Rain lashed against the glass while thunder rolled across the mountains surrounding Ironclaw. Bloodmoon would protect her. Of course they would. The ancient clans had always hidden behind noble ideals and prophecies. They would preach duty. Honor. Destiny. But Darius knew the truth. Power was the only thing that mattered. Power decided who ruled. Power decided who survived. And if he had to tear apart kingdoms to claim it so be it. Slowly, his anger settled. Not disappearing. Focusing. Refining itself into purpose. A dangerous smile spread across his face. It was time to inform the Veil. A hidden passage lay behind the bookshelf in his chambers. No warrior knew about it. No Beta. Not even Garrick. The mechanism clicked softly beneath his touch, and a section of stone shifted inward with a low grinding sound. Cold air rushed upward from the darkness below. Darius descended alone. The narrow staircase twisted deep beneath Ironclaw territory, spiraling through tunnels carved long before modern wolves established packs in these mountains. Ancient runes covered the walls. Symbols forbidden by the Council. Symbols feared by ordinary wolves. Symbols Darius had spent years learning to read. The deeper he traveled, the stronger the magic became. Most wolves would have felt unease. Corruption. Wrongness. Darius felt possibility. The tunnel eventually opened into a vast underground chamber. Black stone pillars rose from the floor like twisted trees. Candles burned with unnatural blue flames. Ancient books lined carved shelves stretching from floor to ceiling. At the centre of the room stood a circular altar carved from obsidian. The runes surrounding it glowed faintly red. Darius approached slowly. For years this room had been his sanctuary. His place of study. His place of power. The Council called it dark magic. Fools. Power was neither light nor dark. Only useful or wasted. And he had no intention of wasting anything. A movement behind him drew his attention. His son stood at the entrance to the chamber. Jaxon. Tall. Strong. Every bit the future Alpha Ironclaw expected him to become. Yet lately, something had changed. Questions. Doubts. Weakness. Darius disliked all three. "You followed me." Jaxon folded his arms across his chest. "I wanted answers." Darius laughed softly. "Dangerous thing to seek." Jaxon's jaw tightened. "You're working with them." Not a question. An accusation. Interesting. Darius turned slowly. "And if I am?" For several seconds, father and son simply stared at one another. "I saw your face when Hailey awakened." The name hung heavily between them. "Whatever you're involved in, it has something to do with her." Darius smiled. "Everything has to do with her." Confusion flashed across Jaxon's face. Then concern. Darius hated concern. Concern made people hesitate. And hesitation got people killed. "Father." The word sounded strained. "You need to stop." The amusement vanished instantly. Darius stepped forward. Slowly. Dangerously. "Careful." Jaxon held his ground. "They killed people." Silence. "They attacked the orphanage." The room grew colder. "They murdered children." For the first time, uncertainty flickered across Darius' expression. Then it disappeared. Replaced by irritation. "History is built on sacrifice." Jaxon's face hardened. "No." His voice was quiet. Steady. "It's built on people like you convincing themselves that murder is necessary." The accusation lingered heavily in the chamber. For a moment, Darius considered striking him. Instead, he turned away. "You are not ready to understand." "No," Jaxon said quietly. "I understand perfectly." The disappointment in his son's voice followed him toward the altar. Strangely it bothered him more than it should have. The ritual began with blood. It always did. A single drop fell onto the obsidian surface. The runes ignited instantly. Red light surged through the chamber. The air thickened. Darkened. Shadows stretched unnaturally along the walls. Jaxon stepped backward instinctively. Good. Perhaps he finally understood the forces involved. The altar pulsed. Once. Twice. Then the shadows began moving. Not naturally. Purposefully. Like living creatures crawling across stone. The darkness gathered above the altar. Twisting. Spinning. Taking shape. Several figures emerged slowly from the shadows. Women cloaked in black. Their faces hidden beneath deep hoods. Only their eyes remained visible. Silver. Cold. Ancient. The Veil. Even after years of contact, their presence remained unsettling. Not because they were powerful. Because they felt empty. Like standing before something that had forgotten how to be human centuries ago. One of the witches stepped forward. "Alpha Darius." Her voice echoed strangely through the chamber. "You requested an audience." Darius smiled. Finally. Recognition. Importance. "I bring valuable information." The witch remained silent. Waiting. "The Silvermoon heir has awakened." No reaction. Darius continued. "Selene has returned." Still nothing. His confidence wavered slightly. "The prophecy is real." The witch tilted her head. Almost curious. "Continue." Darius frowned. Surely they understood what this meant. "Hailey carries the Silvermoon bloodline." He stepped closer. "She is the final heir." The shadows shifted. The witches exchanged glances. Then to Darius' surprise several of them smiled. Not with gratitude. With amusement. A cold feeling settled into his stomach. The lead witch laughed softly. "You think this is new information?" The smile vanished from Darius' face. "What?" The witch's silver eyes gleamed. "We felt her awakening the moment it happened." Silence. "We have known for weeks." Something dangerous entered her voice. "We know where she is." Another witch stepped forward. "We know who protects her." A third smiled. "We know Bloodmoon has welcomed her." The chamber suddenly felt much colder. Darius stared. Confused. Frustrated. "You already knew?" The witches exchanged amused looks. The lead witch moved closer. Close enough that even Darius felt unease. "Useful." The word drifted through the shadows. Nothing more. The realization struck harder than any physical blow. They didn't see him as a partner. An ally. An equal. He was a tool. A means to an end. Rage surged immediately. But he buried it. Because power still waited at the end of this path. It had to. "You promised me knowledge." The witch smiled. "We promised opportunity." Not the same thing. The distinction suddenly felt important. Terrifyingly important. The lead witch turned toward the darkness surrounding the altar. "The time has come." The shadows thickened. Ancient power pulsed through the chamber. Even the runes seemed afraid. Darius straightened. "What do you need?" The witch's gaze returned to him. "Bloodmoon." A chill ran down his spine. "What about it?" The smile that followed was utterly devoid of warmth. "You're going to help us find her." Darius nodded slowly. Of course. That was expected. The witch stepped closer. "Open the eastern passes." His pulse quickened. Those passes led directly through the mountains. Directly toward Bloodmoon territory. "Guide our forces." Darius hesitated. Only briefly. Then he nodded. The witch smiled again. This time, Darius couldn't shake the feeling that he had just agreed to something far larger than he understood. As the shadows swallowed the witches once more and their magic faded from the chamber, Alpha Darius stood alone beside the altar. A smile slowly spread across his face. Soon the Silvermoon heir would be his. Soon the ancient power would belong to him. Soon the world would finally understand his greatness. What he never noticed was the final whisper left behind by the shadows. A whisper spoken only after the witches were gone. A whisper Jaxon heard clearly from the darkness beyond the doorway. "Kill the Alpha when Bloodmoon falls." And for the first time that night fear settled into Jaxon's heart.
