Chapter 39

Promises Beneath Moonlight Hailey The laughter slowly fades, but the warmth remains. For the first time since my world turned upside down, I feel something dangerously close to peace. Outside, moonlight blankets the valley below. The forests surrounding Bloodmoon stretch endlessly toward the horizon, silver mist drifting between ancient trees while distant mountain peaks glow beneath the light of the full moon. Beside me, Kael and Asher remain seated on the oversized sofa. Neither seems in any hurry to move. Neither am I. The bond hums quietly between us. Comfortable. Steady. Safe. A low groan suddenly breaks the silence. All three of us turn toward the bed. Zane sits upright, blinking at the room with obvious confusion. His gaze sweeps across the room. Finds us. Narrows. Then he points dramatically. "You left me." I immediately laugh. "We were twenty feet away." "You abandoned me." "You were sleeping." "Exactly." The accusation somehow makes perfect sense in Zane's mind. I can tell. Kael pinches the bridge of his nose. "You are exhausting." "I'm adorable." "No." "Most people agree with me." "Those people are wrong." Zane ignores him completely and makes his way toward us. The sofa is already crowded. This does not stop him. A second later he somehow wedges himself into the remaining space. Now I'm trapped between three giant wolves. Wonderful. The bond immediately fills with satisfaction. Traitors. Every single one of them. A few minutes later another shift ripples through the room. Rider. I don't even need to look. The bond announces his awakening before he opens his eyes. Concern. Alertness. Awareness. The first thing he does is search for me. The realization makes my heart do something strange. The second thing he does is discover I am currently trapped between his brothers. His expression immediately becomes suspicious. "What's happening?" "Nothing." His eyes narrow. He clearly doesn't believe me. Smart man. Rider crosses the room and drops into the armchair opposite us. Only once he's confirmed I am unharmed does he finally relax. The sight makes something warm settle inside my chest. For years I protected myself. Now four people seem determined to make sure I never have to do it alone again. The feeling is still overwhelming. Asher Hailey doesn't realize how much she reveals when she goes quiet. The bond helps. But even without it, I would see it. The way her thoughts turn inward. The way her gaze drifts toward the mountains. The questions she still carries. Questions nobody has properly answered. Questions she deserves answers to. "The stories weren't entirely wrong." Four heads turn toward me. Including Hailey's. She blinks. "Which stories?" "The stories about the guardians." Immediately I have everyone's attention. Even Zane. A miracle. Hailey shifts slightly toward me. "What weren't they wrong about?" I glance toward the moonlit valley beyond the windows. "The guardians were real." Silence settles over the room. "The first Silvermoon Queen wasn't meant to rule alone. The ancient clans understood something modern packs forgot." "What?" Hailey asks. I meet her gaze. "One person cannot carry the world alone." Something flickers across her face. Understanding. Pain. Hope. Perhaps all three. "The guardians weren't servants," I continue. "They weren't followers either. They were companions. Advisors. Protectors. The people entrusted to stand beside the Silvermoon Queen when everyone else stood against her." The room grows quiet again. Thoughtful. Heavy. For the first time since arriving at Bloodmoon, Hailey isn't hearing about destiny. She's hearing about partnership. Hailey I don't know why that matters so much. But it does. Maybe because every prophecy I've heard so far makes it sound like I'm supposed to save the world. Alone. Maybe because everyone keeps calling me the heir. The chosen one. The Silvermoon. As though those titles somehow make me stronger. The truth is far less impressive. I'm still trying to figure out who I am. I stare down at my hands. "What happens if I fail?" The question slips out before I can stop it. Silence follows. The kind of silence that feels important. Then Kael speaks. "If you fail..." His voice is calm. Steady. "...then we fail." I look up. His silver-blue eyes never leave mine. "Together." The simple certainty in his voice steals my breath. Rider nods. "You don't carry this alone anymore." My throat tightens. Asher's expression softens. "You were never supposed to." The words hit harder than they should. Because my entire life has been spent carrying things alone. Pain. Fear. Loneliness. Hope. Everything. Now four men keep reminding me I don't have to. The thought is both comforting and terrifying. Then Zane ruins the emotional moment. "As if we're letting you fail." Everyone turns toward him. He shrugs. "What?" "You had one serious moment," Kael says. "It was exhausting." I laugh despite myself. Again. The bond immediately floods with warmth. Gods. I don't think they will ever get tired of hearing me laugh. Asher There is one final thing she needs to understand. "The guardians represented more than protection." Hailey looks toward me. "What do you mean?" I gesture toward the brothers. "The ancient clans each represented different strengths." I point toward Kael first. "Leadership. Strength. Duty." Kael immediately looks uncomfortable. Good. Next, Rider. "Protection. Loyalty. Courage." Rider pretends not to hear. Then Zane. "Spirit. Hope. Passion." Zane bows dramatically. Naturally. Finally, myself. "Wisdom. Knowledge. Strategy." Hailey studies all of us carefully. Then her gaze slowly widens. "You complete each other." The realization settles heavily into the room. I nod. "That was always the purpose." Her eyes drift toward the moon outside. Then back to us. "And me?" A small smile touches my lips. "You were never meant to stand above us." The bond grows quiet. Listening. Waiting. "You were meant to stand with us." For a moment nobody speaks. The words settle between us. Not as prophecy. Not as destiny. As truth. Hailey The weight I've been carrying since Selene awakened suddenly feels lighter. Not gone. Just... Shared. Perhaps that was always the point. Perhaps the Moon Goddess never intended me to carry everything alone. A strange peace settles over me. Outside, the first hints of dawn begin appearing along the horizon. Soft gold pushes against the darkness. The night is ending. And with it, this brief moment of calm. The sound reaches us a second later. A horn. Long. Deep. Ancient. Every brother goes still instantly. The atmosphere changes. Gone is the relaxed comfort of a few moments ago. Warriors replace companions. Protectors replace friends. A second horn follows. Then silence. A sharp knock echoes through the room. Nobody speaks. Nobody needs to. We all know what it means. The door opens. A Bloodmoon warrior stands outside. His expression is grim. "Alpha Rowan requests your presence in the council chamber." The peace of the night is over. And war is finally knocking at Bloodmoon's door.
