The Crescent Vault
Hailey
The silence stretches.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Dangerous.
No one speaks.
No one moves.
The silver glow from the prophecy slowly fades until only the flickering candlelight remains, casting long shadows across the council chamber.
Yet the words linger.
Burned into my mind.
Seek the Crescent Vault before shadow reaches the mountain.
There the Moon Mother's tears await her daughter.
I look around the room.
Every elder appears unsettled.
Several have gone pale.
One old wolf actually lowers himself into a chair as though his legs no longer trust him.
That is never a good sign.
Finally, Alpha Theron exhales slowly.
"The Crescent Vault was never supposed to be found."
My stomach tightens.
"What is it?"
The older Alpha exchanges a glance with the elders before returning his attention to me.
"A secret."
I stare.
"That tells me absolutely nothing."
To my surprise, a few smiles appear around the table.
Even now.
Even here.
The urge to answer every question with another question apparently survives centuries.
Wonderful.
Theron's expression softens slightly.
"The Crescent Vault was created during the final years of the Silvermoon Kingdom."
The room grows quiet once more.
"The last Silvermoon Queen ordered its construction shortly before the Great Sundering."
A chill crawls down my spine.
"What was hidden there?"
The Alpha's gaze settles on the prophecy.
"Everything."
Kael
Fenrir immediately becomes alert.
The word changes the room.
Everyone feels it.
Everything.
Not a weapon.
Not a relic.
Not a treasure.
Everything.
Knowledge.
History.
Secrets.
Power.
The room suddenly feels smaller.
More dangerous.
Across the table, Hailey sits perfectly still.
Listening.
Absorbing.
Trying to understand.
She has spent her entire life searching for answers.
Now she is being told an entire vault full of them exists.
And somehow, I suspect she isn't the only one looking for it.
The Veil knows.
They must.
Which means our timeline just became much shorter.
Alpha Theron
"The Crescent Vault was built to survive the fall of Silvermoon."
I move toward one of the ancient maps hanging on the wall.
"The witches were already hunting bloodlines by then."
Several elders nod.
Dark memories.
Old wounds.
"The Silvermoon rulers knew they would lose the kingdom."
Hailey's eyes widen.
"They knew?"
"Yes."
The word hangs heavily between us.
"They knew the war was coming. They knew betrayal was spreading through the clans. They knew enemies had infiltrated their courts."
The similarities to our current situation are impossible to ignore.
The room notices.
No one comments.
But everyone notices.
"The Vault was meant to preserve what remained."
I place my hand against the ancient map.
"History."
Another point.
"Artifacts."
Another.
"Knowledge."
Then finally:
"And the Moon Mother's Tears."
The room falls silent again.
Hailey
I blink.
"The what?"
Several elders immediately look uncomfortable.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Alpha Theron rubs a hand across his beard.
"The Moon Mother's Tears are... complicated."
"That's not reassuring."
"No."
"It really isn't."
For the first time all morning, Zane looks entertained.
"See? This is exactly how everyone answers questions around here."
I point toward him.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Alpha Theron ignores both of us.
"The Tears were gifts."
My attention immediately returns to him.
"Given by who?"
"The Moon Goddess."
The room grows still.
Selene stirs inside me.
Not strongly.
Just enough that I notice.
Recognition.
My pulse quickens.
"What kind of gifts?"
Theron's expression darkens.
"We don't know."
The answer surprises everyone.
Even the elders.
"We only know they exist because they are mentioned in the oldest records."
A strange feeling settles in my stomach.
The prophecy specifically mentioned them.
Not weapons.
Not armies.
Not magic.
The Tears.
Which means they matter.
Somehow.
Asher
The pieces are beginning to move.
I can feel it.
Like a strategy board slowly revealing itself.
The prophecy has done more than reveal a destination.
It has revealed urgency.
The witches are coming.
The Vault exists.
And whatever is hidden inside is important enough for the Moon Goddess herself to reference.
That alone changes everything.
I study the map.
The mountains.
The valleys.
The old routes.
Then something catches my attention.
A symbol.
Small.
Nearly forgotten.
But familiar.
Very familiar.
My pulse quickens.
"No."
Several heads turn toward me.
I move closer to the map.
Closer to a section of mountains east of Bloodmoon territory.
The symbol is faded.
Almost invisible.
Yet I know exactly where I've seen it before.
The ruins.
The place where Garrick found Hailey.
Hailey
My breath catches.
"You've seen it too."
Asher nods.
Slowly.
"The same symbol was carved into the ruins."
The room immediately erupts into discussion.
Questions.
Arguments.
Possibilities.
My heart pounds.
Because suddenly another memory surfaces.
The dream.
My mother.
The ruins.
The command.
Run.
A cold realization settles inside my chest.
What if those ruins weren't random?
What if my parents left me there intentionally?
What if the ruins were connected to the Vault?
The thought sends a shiver down my spine.
Selene rises softly.
Not connected.
The voice inside me sounds distant.
Ancient.
Certain.
They were the first key.
My breath catches.
The room fades.
Just for a second.
The silver wolf appears within my mind.
Watching.
Waiting.
The path has already begun, little moon.
Then she vanishes.
Leaving only her final words behind.
Your parents knew where to leave you.
The connection breaks.
I blink.
The council chamber rushes back into focus.
Everyone is still talking.
Still arguing.
Still trying to solve the mystery.
But I no longer hear them.
Because for the first time since learning the truth about my parents...
I understand something.
They didn't abandon me.
They hid me.
Exactly where I needed to be found.
Alpha Theron
The room slowly settles.
The discussions quiet.
The arguments fade.
Because there is only one conclusion left.
One unavoidable truth.
I look around the chamber.
At the elders.
The warriors.
The guardians.
And finally—
the Silvermoon heir.
"The Crescent Vault exists."
No one argues.
"The prophecy has revealed its location."
No one questions it.
"And if the Veil reaches it first..."
I don't need to finish the sentence.
Everyone already understands.
The witches cannot be allowed to claim whatever lies inside.
Which means there is only one option left.
I meet Hailey's gaze.
"When do we leave?"
The answer comes from Kael.
Immediate.
Certain.
Absolute.
"At first light."
And somewhere beyond the mountains, hidden beneath centuries of secrets and waiting patiently for its rightful heir...
the Crescent Vault waits.
