Chapter 50

1522 Words
Beyond the First Gate Hailey The mountain groaned. Not like stone shifting. Not like rock breaking. Like something ancient waking from a sleep so deep that the world had forgotten it existed. The sound rolled across the valley, vibrating through the ground beneath our feet and settling somewhere deep inside my chest. Dust drifted from the enormous archway as silver light spread across the ancient runes carved into its surface. One by one the symbols awakened, illuminating thousands of years of forgotten history hidden within the stone. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. For several heartbeats, all of us simply stood there and watched. The First Gate was opening. The realization felt impossible. This structure had stood hidden within the mountains for centuries. Generations had lived and died. Kingdoms had risen and fallen. Wars had been fought. Entire bloodlines had vanished. Yet this gate had remained sealed. Waiting. Waiting for me. The thought should have made me proud. Instead, it terrified me. Because if an entire civilization had built something this enormous merely to guard the entrance... What exactly had they been protecting? Or perhaps a more important question... What had they been keeping trapped? The ancient stone doors continued moving apart with agonizing slowness. Silver light poured from the widening gap. A road emerged from the darkness beyond. Ancient white stone stretched forward beneath towering columns covered in glowing runes. The sight stole my breath. Beside me, Rider's hand found mine. His fingers intertwined with mine naturally. Comfortingly. The bond immediately responded. Warmth. Steadiness. Protection. I squeezed his hand without thinking. Without looking. Without needing to. Because somehow I knew he understood exactly what I was feeling. Fear. Wonder. Hope. And something else. The overwhelming certainty that everything was about to change. Rider I had seen battlefields. I had seen rogue attacks. I had seen entire forests burning beneath a blood-red moon. None of it compared to this. The power radiating from the First Gate was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It wasn't aggressive. It wasn't threatening. It simply existed. Ancient. Patient. Powerful enough that every instinct inside my wolf demanded respect. My attention drifted toward Hailey. Moonlight seemed to cling to her skin despite the afternoon sun shining above us. The symbols carved into the gate were reacting to her. Not to any of us. To her. The runes nearest her glowed brighter. The silver light seemed to reach toward her. Welcoming her. Recognizing her. The mountain knew exactly who she was. The realization settled heavily inside my chest. Because the more we discovered about her heritage, the more obvious it became that she was far more important than any of us had imagined. Not just to Bloodmoon. Not just to the prophecy. To history itself. Hailey The doors finally stopped moving. Silence followed. The kind of silence that settles over sacred places. The kind that makes even breathing feel too loud. Then Selene stirred. Not with fear. Not with concern. With memory. The emotion flooded through me so suddenly that my knees nearly buckled. Grief. Love. Longing. Home. I remember this place. The words echoed softly through my mind. I swallowed. You came here before? For several moments she remained silent. Then: Many times. The answer carried so much sadness that it made my chest ache. What was it? A long pause followed. As though she was struggling to pull ancient memories from the depths of time. Then finally: The Path of Kings. The words sent a chill through me. Something about them felt important. Sacred. Ancient. I glanced toward Asher. The moment he heard the name, his entire expression changed. Asher My heart nearly stopped. The Path of Kings. Every historian knew the legend. Or at least we thought we did. Most scholars believed it was symbolic. A metaphor describing the journey taken by Silvermoon rulers during their coronation. Not an actual place. Certainly not a road hidden inside a mountain. Yet here it was. Standing directly in front of us. Physical proof that modern history was wrong. Again. The deeper we travelled into Silvermoon territory, the more obvious it became that our ancestors had forgotten far more than they remembered. The thought was both exciting and terrifying. Because every discovery raised another question. If history lied about this... What else had it lied about? Zane "Well." Nobody responded. Typical. I pointed dramatically toward the giant magical road disappearing into darkness. "We're definitely not in Bloodmoon anymore." To my immense satisfaction, Hailey laughed. A real laugh. The kind that reached her eyes. The kind I hadn't heard enough lately. The sound echoed softly beneath the gate. Beautiful. Alive. For a brief moment, the fear vanished from her face. And honestly? That mattered more than the giant magical death road. Probably. Hailey The path beyond the gate felt different. The moment we crossed the threshold, a strange sensation rushed through my body. Like stepping through an invisible curtain. The air changed. The temperature changed. Even the sounds changed. The outside world vanished behind us. Ahead, the ancient road stretched deeper into the mountain. Silver light pulsed beneath our feet. The columns lining the pathway awakened one after another as we approached. Symbols illuminated. Ancient runes glowed. Forgotten words came alive. It felt as though the mountain itself was watching us. Judging us. Deciding whether we belonged. I should have felt nervous. Instead, I felt something else. Recognition. As though some forgotten part of me had been waiting my entire life to return here. The realization frightened me. Because this place felt more familiar than Ironclaw ever had. Kael Nobody spoke for nearly twenty minutes. Not because there was nothing to say. Because words felt inadequate. The Path of Kings wound deeper into the mountain valley, revealing fragments of an ancient civilization with every turn. Broken bridges crossed crystal rivers. Massive statues emerged from the stone walls. Ancient towers rose from the forests below. The scale was overwhelming. This wasn't a kingdom. This had been an empire. A civilization powerful enough to shape mountains. A civilization sophisticated enough to hide itself from history. I glanced toward Hailey. The wonder on her face made something tighten inside my chest. She belonged here. Not because of blood. Not because of prophecy. Because every piece of this place seemed to recognize her. Hailey The path eventually curved around a cliff edge. I stepped forward. Then stopped so abruptly that Rider almost walked into me. My breath caught. The world seemed to freeze. For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe. Forgot how to think. Forgot everything except what stood before me. The mountain opened. The hidden valley stretched endlessly beyond the cliffs. My eyes widened. No story. No legend. No dream. Nothing could have prepared me for this. Silvermoon wasn't gone. Its bones still remained. Ancient cities lay hidden amongst forests reclaimed by nature. Massive towers rose from the valley floor. Bridges stretched across deep ravines. Temples clung to mountain sides. Waterfalls cascaded from impossible heights. Silver rivers wound through the landscape like threads of liquid moonlight. The beauty was almost painful. My vision blurred. Tears burned unexpectedly behind my eyes. Not sadness. Wonder. For the first time, I was looking at the world my ancestors had built. The world my parents died protecting. The world I was born to inherit. Hailey A hand settled gently against my lower back. Grounding me. Steadying me. Rider. I leaned into the contact without thinking. Across the overlook, Asher stood speechless. Actually speechless. Which might have been the most shocking thing I'd seen all day. Zane simply stared. For once, even he couldn't find a joke. Kael stood beside me. Silent. Watching. Absorbing. Finally he spoke. "This changes everything." The words barely rose above a whisper. Yet every one of us felt the truth behind them. Because it did. Nothing would ever be the same after today. Hailey Then I saw it. Far beyond the valley. Far beyond the ruined cities and ancient temples. Something rose from the centre of the mountains. My heart stopped. A structure unlike anything I had ever seen. Massive. Ancient. Impossible. Silver walls climbed into the sky. A giant crescent shape had been carved directly into the mountain itself. The entire structure seemed to glow beneath the fading sunlight. Protected by cliffs. Hidden by the mountains. Waiting. The sight pulled at something deep inside me. The same pull I had been feeling for days. Stronger now. Much stronger. "The Vault." The words escaped before I could stop them. Selene immediately appeared. Ancient fear crashed through our bond. So powerful it stole the air from my lungs. No. I froze. My pulse quickened. No? The silver wolf stared toward the distant structure. Her entire body rigid. Her expression haunted. Then she delivered the answer that shattered every expectation. That is not the Crescent Vault. Ice flooded my veins. I stared at the impossible structure again. At its size. At its beauty. At the overwhelming power radiating from it. If that wasn't the Vault... Then what in the name of the Moon Goddess was? And more importantly... How much deeper did this mystery go?
