Chapter 20

1129 Words
The Silence Between Us Hailey Silence. Real silence. Not the kind filled with whispers or distant voices, or the hum of machines that remind you life is still moving somewhere beyond your reach. This... is different. The kind that settles into your bones, seeping slowly into every part of you until it feels like it belongs there. The kind that makes you aware of every breath you take, every crackle of wood, every creak of the cabin as it shifts with the wind. The kind that makes you feel alone. Utterly alone. The cabin smells like moss and old wood, like something that has existed here long before me and will remain long after I am gone. It is clean and neat, untouched by chaos or life, as if no one truly lives here. Simple, yet perfect. I sit on the edge of the narrow bed, staring down at my bandaged arm. The pain has dulled into something manageable now, no longer sharp enough to steal my breath, but present enough to remind me of what happened. A slow, steady throb beneath the surface, grounding me in reality. Reminding me I'm still here. Still alive.Still... me. My fingers twitch slightly against the fabric of the bandage, and for a second just a second something flickers beneath my skin. Warm. Sharp. Like tiny sparks dancing just under the surface, alive in a way I can't explain. I freeze. My breath catches in my throat as my body stills completely, every sense sharpening at once. "What is that..." I whisper, the sound of my voice too loud in the quiet space. It disappears as quickly as it came, leaving nothing behind but a hollow unease that settles deep in my chest. The forest outside is quiet. Too quiet. No patrols moving through the trees. No familiar pack scents carried on the wind.No distant voices, no laughter, no life. No safety net. Just me. And whatever is happening to me. The car and the driver sped off the moment I stepped out of the SUV, gravel crunching beneath the tyres as if he couldn't leave fast enough. He had no words of encouragement, no explanation, no reassurance. No attempt to ease the storm building inside me. Just silence. I swing my legs off the bed slowly, testing my balance as my boots meet the wooden floor. My body protests immediately, aches running through my legs and settling deep into my muscles, but I hold steady. Pain isn't new to me. Training hour after hour in the arena has made sure of that. My body knows pain. It understands it, accepts it, works through it without hesitation. It's a pain I have become accustomed to. A pain I know all too well. I move toward the small window, each step careful but steady, and push the curtain aside. Trees. Endless rows of gigantic, towering trees stretch as far as I can see. Thick trunks rooted deep into the earth, branches heavy with leaves that block out most of the sky above. Ancient. Unmoving. Watching. It feels like something out there is aware of me. Waiting. The world feels distant, like it has shifted just out of reach. Like everything I knew has been pulled away from me. Or maybe... I've been pulled away from it. And something else is waiting for me now. Patiently. And then it hits me. Not pain. Not fear. Something else entirely. A pull. Low.Deep.Unavoidable. My hand presses instinctively against my chest as my heart stutters violently, skipping and racing all at once. And suddenly I'm not alone anymore. I can sense it. A presence. Cold. Controlled. Watching. I don't know how I know. But I do. It brushes against me like ice, sharp and steady, unyielding in its presence. Then another. Warm. Grounded. Protective. Like roots settling deep into the earth beneath my feet, anchoring me, holding me steady when everything else feels like it's shifting. Then something sharp. Fast. Unpredictable. Like storm clouds gathering just before the sky breaks open, energy crackling beneath the surface. Lightning skimming across my nerves. My blood feels alive. Restless. And finally Heat. Dark. Intense. Like fire burning deep inside me, spreading slowly but surely, consuming everything in its path. Dangerous. Hungry. They are all there. All of them. Claiming. Claiming me. I stagger back from the window, the sudden weight of it too much, my breath coming out uneven. "No..." My voice shakes, barely more than a whisper. "No, no, no, this isn't happening." My hand grips the edge of the table, knuckles whitening as I try to ground myself, try to make sense of something that doesn't make sense. I can feel them. All of them. Not close. Not here. But searching. Reaching. Pulling me towards them like an invisible thread tightening with every second. I feel it. The bond. "They can't find me," I whisper, more to myself than anything else. They won't find me. I've survived my whole life without anyone, without my wolf. I don't need them now. I don't need four Alphas showing up and deciding I belong to them. I don't need fate. I don't need them. My breathing quickens, chest rising and falling too fast, my pulse racing wildly beneath my skin. But the pull it strengthens. "Stop it!" I shout aloud, the sound echoing off the walls as I try to reclaim control of my own body. As if I can command it. As if I have any control at all over what is happening. The connection pulses again. Stronger. Closer. They're coming. Something shifts inside me. Deep. Buried. Hidden in the darkness of my mind where I have never looked before. Something. Not fear. Not exactly. Something else. Something older. Something that doesn't want me to run. Something that wants to stand. Fight. Claim what is coming. My fingers curl slowly into fists, nails pressing into my palms. My arm aches, pain flaring briefly, but I don't move. I stand ready. My skin begins to light up faintly, like sparks flickering beneath the surface. Lightning runs through my veins, sharp and electric, my feet rooted firmly to the ground as if the earth itself is holding me in place. My mouth is dry as the desert. My hands are cold as ice. The feeling doesn't fade. It spreads. A silver light flickers beneath my skin. Brief. Unnatural. Alive. I stare at my hand, my breath shallow. "What... am I?" Outside a branch snaps. My head lifts sharply, every muscle in my body going rigid. Every instinct I have screams at once. They found me. And for the first time since this all began... I don't know if I want to run or wait. Because something inside me is no longer afraid. Something inside me... is waking up.
