Calista wakes sometime in the night, her fire burned to coals, and a chill in the air.
Onyx is immediately awake. “Run now” She excitedly says.
“Alright, but we can’t afford to shred these clothes.” She says stripping out of sweats and a hoodie. she grabs the blanket from her bed, and wraps up in it. She walks around the small cabin and sees nothing out of place. Slowly she pokes her head out the door and it looks all clear. Walking outside, she walks a few feet from the house, shifts, and drops the blanket.
“Not far, Onyx. No more than a mile. Until we know it's safe.” She tells her wolf, as they walk around checking for potential danger. Satisfied, they take off running. They run until they reach the clearing, and can look down on the pack house.
All of the sudden, she smells the air and grins. “Mate! I smell mate! on the air. Mate was here.” Onyx excitedly says.
“We don’t need a mate. If there is one, he will probably reject me anyway. I am just an omega now. And Alpha wouldn’t let me go. He takes too much enjoyment in torturing me.”
“18 soon, and still have alpha blood.”
“We need to get back. Alpha said not to be seen all weekend.” She says before they begin to run.
“Once back inside the cabin, Calista locks the door, and walks to the bedroom and grabs a pair a jeans a clean shirt, and her hoodie along, and walks to the bathroom and showers.
She washes her scar laden body, old bruises pollute her fair skin. Once finished, she uses a thin blanket to dry off with and dresses. She brushes her long ebony hair and pulls it up in a bun.
She walks past the chest, the old pictures she saw have intrigued her. ‘I need more light for that. There’s time for it.’ She thinks to herself.
“Maybe answers are in there.” Onyx says suddenly.
“I believe you might be right.” She replies and finds her small stock of fire wood and lights a fire in the stove. “Get some heat in here, and let's see if Sarah sent me with anything.” She mutters reaching for her backpack she brought from the bedroom.
Rummaging through the bag, she finds a few cans of soup, and some packets of instant coffee and several tea bags. “I love you, Sarah.” She says grabbing an old pot and walking outside and across a small meadow to a running creek. She dips the pot in filling it, and carries it back to the cabin and sets it on top of the stove, before going out again in search for more firewood.
Calista finds some firewood on the side of the cabin left by its last resident. She takes an armload and walks around the corner and back inside and kicks the door shut.
After piling the wood next to the stove, she finds the candle from last night, and strikes a match and lights the wick, casting a small area of light. Setting it on the table, she checks the water and its boiling. She grabs a tin cup that Sarah packed for her, and pours in the water over instant coffee granules. After a stir with a spoon, she takes a sip. ‘Not the best coffee in the world, but it will do.’ She thinks gratefully for her friend. “The alpha would’ve rather I starved out here.” She mutters to herself.
“The alpha hopes a rogue kills us.” Onyx says waking up in her head.
“Maybe the rogue will understand and take me away from the pack.”
Onyx growls, “No, we find mate. Not live with rogues. They will hurt us.” She says before going to the back of Calista’s mind.
“Fine! Be that way.” Calista says before sipping her coffee again.
After finishing her drink, Calista grabs her hoodie and walks outside. She sits on the step, and watches as the earth becomes more light, the stars fade and the sun rises into the sky.
She gets up, and walks around, making sure to stay close to the cabin, and keeping her ears tuned to any sounds. A simple branch breaking could just be a wild animal, or it could be a danger. ‘Would Miranda send someone to kill me? She and her mother would love me out of the way.’ She wonders silently.
She makes it to the stream, and it’s a large fast moving creek that is fed from a large waterfall Making it look like a pool that narrows and flows over some rocks to make small rapids. Calista inhales deeply and then exhales enjoying the clean mountain air.
Feeling her stomach growl, she turns and heads back to the cabin to check the woodstove, and make something for breakfast.
