I’m guessing she felt me tense up because she got off of me and asked if I was okay. Of course I said yeah I couldn’t let her know that I wasn’t comfortable with her touching me because I didn’t want her thinking I was different. I wanted them to think I was normal, even if I wasn’t.
Samantha started the first white chicks movie. Hailey whispers in my ear. “Want me to paint your nails?” She says kind of sounding as if she more excited about it then I was. I nod trying to seem excited and I’m guessing it worked bc she jumped up and went to grab Samantha’s nail polish kit. Samantha sees this and squeals. “Is it time for nails” Samantha sounds way more excited than Hailey did.
Everyone cheers and starts grabbing a nail polish color. Hailey grabbed purple for mine, I grabbed pink for Haileys in return. Samantha grabbed red for Angelica, Angelica then grabs light blue for Samantha. Lizzy was waiting for Angelica to finish with Samantha so Angelica could go do hers.
“Hey so do you have anyone to be all lovey with or are you still single? You don’t really talk to us about your love life so we don’t know if you’re dating anyone.” Hailey said as she started painting my left hand nails. All the girls agreed with what Hailey said and urged me to tell them if I was seeing someone.
The truth was I wasn’t seeing anyone and I didn’t like anyone either. I’ve always been to nervous to confess so when someone confessed to me I didn’t know how to say no so I just say yes.
“No im not seeing anyone” I say chuckling a little at their nosey comments. They all look at each other septically. “You sure? You and Jason seem close” Samantha said.
Me and Jason had known each other since sophomore year. He had dark brown short hair, it was buzzed on the sides. He had dark blue eyes and he was a football player. We study together because he isn’t so good at English and I am. I knew that he liked me but I am way too nervous to confront him about it. He would flirt with me during studying and in the halls, I wouldn’t flirt back but my face would turn red and so everyone thinks I like him. I just get really red when I get nervous.
“Yes I’m sure you nest Nancie’s” I say in a more or less positive sounding tone. “Oh come on Jason is the star football player and you are a track runner and a very good one at that. Y’all would be like the jock power couple. Only you’re not a jock thankfully.” Lizzy says putting her hands in a praying stance as she said the part about me being a jock.
“Yeah I know. I just don’t think that he’s the right guy for me I guess.” I lied I had no interest in Jason at all, he was a football player which meant if we did date I would have to be social. I cannot do that. As nervous as I get when I’m in crowds imagine if I would to date the star football player. I don’t talk to many people except for my group of girls, but even they don’t know the real me. How would people react to me dating someone who is the most socially acceptable person ever? People would start running up to talk to me in the halls, they would eventually find out about my disorder.
That cannot After they were done chastising me about Jason and I’s relationship we focus on the nail painting and the movie. We would occasionally laugh and make comments on how the two men were trying to be white girls. It wasn’t as funny as they made it out to be but it was still a classic comedy.
As we finished the first movie Samantha goes to grab the remote to put on the second movie. “Who wants snacks?” Samantha says as she searches up the second movie. Everyone says yeah and so Samantha clicks on the movie but doesn’t start it yet, she gets off the bed and goes to exit the room stopping a few inches away. “What kind of chips? Spicy or cheesy?” She asks holding two hands out acting as if they were weighing bars. The girls and I all say cheesy.
I liked spicy chips more than cheesy but the thing I’ve learned is that you need to change yourself to fit in this group of girls. I never thought of changing myself until I met them, that’s when I started to realize that I was going to do whatever I can to fit in.
Samantha runs downstairs and the other girls and I start making small talk about classes and stuff until she gets back. She comes back into the room with two bowls. One had a bowl full of mixed candy and the other one had cheesy ruffles in it. She sets them down on the edge of the bed. Samantha was sitting down on the left side of her bed. Hailey was sitting down on the edge of the bed next to me on the right side. Lizzy was sitting on the left side on the edge, Angelica was siting next to Samantha.
The rest of the night went by slowly we watched movies ate snacks and talked about the most random of stuff.
Ive always been against going to sleep at a friend’s house. I was always scared that something would happen in the middle of the night and my friends or I would get hurt so I never sleep at their houses. I mean yeah I stay the night but I don’t sleep. They never really noticed that because they all fall asleep around the same time.
The next morning they Hailey woke up around 7 while all the other girls were still asleep. She woke up to find me working on something on my laptop. It was a history project presentation. I went to grab my bag last night. “Hey what are you doing up so early Maxine?” Hailey asked curiously, her voice sounded like she was still half asleep. I looked over at her slightly confused on why she was woke up so early. “Uh hey Hailey, I woke up a few minutes ago just wanted to get a head start on the history presentation.” I lied but she didn’t seem to catch onto that part.
She stayed up to help me since she was my partner on the project. Everyone else woke up about an hour later. The room filled with yawns and morning greetings.
“Sorry guys I got to go back home, my mom is waiting for me.” I say. I wasn’t sad because I was leaving I wanted to leave but I liked hanging out with all of them but I really wanted to go home. I needed to be with people I completely comfortable with,my family.
They all sound sad and whine saying they wanted me to stay and that they would convince my mom to let me stay. “I will be back later I swear.” I say putting my stuff back into my black bag. “Fine but you better be back before 4 because we have to go to the dress shop to get our dresses for the dance.” Samantha says excitedly. Samantha was all about this dance. She got asked by Nathan he was a basketball player. He had black curly hair and he was kind of tanned.
“Okay I’ll be back before 4. Bye girls see you later!” I say waving at them as I walked out of her room.
