Chapter 6

Juniper POV It had been a week since the incident and my shoulder had healed just fine with all the physical therapy I had been attending. I had not heard another word about the man who had bought me. Alpha Atticus had come by the final day I was in the hospital and made sure that I was alright. Once I was discharged, I went straight to the pack house. "How is it, you get off on being a Luna before I do?" The venomous words hissed behind me just as I reached the door. I turned around and looked at Hannah who was standing there, clearly upset. "I didn't ask for this, Hannah." I said quietly. "I don't even want it." "Alpha Jackson, of the Sun River Mountain Pack, was to be my chosen mate. You took him away. How did a lowly omega like yourself do it?" She folded her arms across her chest, her brown hair falling around her shoulders. "Did you w***e yourself out to him?" "That's enough, Hannah." A deep voice spoke behind me, causing me to jump. Alpha Atticus stood in the doorway and looked down at both of us. I bowed my head and took a step to the side. "I don't want to hear any more of this talk, Hannah. I raised you better than that." She turned and stomped off, I assumed to where her friends were. I stood silently as the Alpha sighed. He didn't say anything and walked out of the pack house towards the training grounds. I ran inside and made my way to the kitchen where I found Cheryl baking multiple loaves of bread. The smell was mouth watering and it made my stomach gurgle. She smiled at me as she kneaded a mound of fresh dough. "Hello Dear, can you pull the pans out of the oven, please? I'm not sure where the other girls disappeared to, but a hand would be most welcome." Cheryl said. I quickly moved and put the oven mitts on and pulled out loaves after loaves of fresh baked bread and placed them on the counter. I took them out of their pans and placed them on the cooling racks. Cheryl took the empty pans and placed the fresh dough in them and slid them into the ovens. Once she was done, she smiled again at me and came over and gave me a big hug. "I'm so happy you're feeling better. I have missed you. How is your arm feeling?" She fussed as she looked me over. "I'm fine. The doctor said I should have no problems tomorrow night when I shift." I smiled at her. "OH! Thats right! Tomorrow is your birthday!" Cheryl exclaimed. "The night after tomorrow is the ball. I'll be in the kitchen helping." I said with a forced smile. "Oh, no you won't. I know what the Luna said, but that isn't right. You should be out there finding your mate like the rest of them." She said as she folded her arms over her chest. "I'm already promised to someone else." I said sadly. She dropped her arms and frowned deeply. Her wrinkle lines forming deeply. "I will make sure you are not stuck in this kitchen the whole time. I'll place you as a server so you can at least be out and hope that your fated is among the crowd." "I'm to reject them as soon as we meet. I was paid for by Alpha Jackson. According to Luna Evaline, I will not need for anything as I will be the Luna of a great pack and this will seal the deal of an alliance between the two packs." I said. "He rejected Hannah who was supposed to be his chosen mate. He didn't want her, he wanted me." "Paid for? You'll be 18. A legal adult. You don't have to stay here after your shift." Cheryl scoffed. "But where would I go? I have no other place. Plus, maybe being a Luna won't be so bad. I won't have to do any cleaning, cooking, anything, really." I looked down and sighed defeatedly. Cheryl grabbed me and pulled me into a hug. "You will find your fated. Whoever it is, will not allow this transaction to go through. It's the Moon Goddess's wish that all her children are to live happy lives. I will find a server dress for you and you will help serve the food. While doing that, you will also look for your mate. The ball happens once a year, but finding your mate is once in a lifetime." Cheryl's words hit me hard. Tears formed in my eyes as I held her tightly. "I don't know what I would do without you." I whispered. She let go of me and kissed my cheek before patting it softly. "Come, we need to get dinner cooking. We also need to look at the menu for the ball. I was told we would have extra help from servers and cooks from the palace." She said as she turned around and checked on the loaves of bread that were baking. I nodded and went to the fridge and pulled out all the salad mixings. I started making the salad and Cheryl started humming as she usually does. Once dinner was all set in the buffet-style setting, I retreated to my room with a small loaf of fresh bread. The words from Cheryl still clung to me and I smiled. Maybe, if I found my fated, things would change.
