Chapter 1.
Chapter 1: A Flicker of Hope
I pull my scarf tighter around my neck, the cold air biting at my face as I stand outside the small cabin in the Adirondack Mountains. The night sky is clear, and the stars shine brightly against the crisp winter air. The snow-covered trees sway gently in the wind, and the distant sound of laughter from the nearby party drifts over to me.
Ben’s voice echoes in my mind as I glance back at the cabin. “You look beautiful tonight, Vi. Like you always do.” His words still linger in the air, but they feel different now. The sparkle in his eyes that used to make my heart flutter has started to fade, replaced by something I can’t quite explain—distance.
I exhale a breath, watching it dissipate into the cold night. He’s inside, at the party, surrounded by people, while I’m out here. Alone. Waiting for him to come find me.
The holidays were supposed to be different this year. We had talked about it, laughed about it even. A fresh start. A new chapter. A baby on the way. I would tell him tonight, under the fireworks, just as we’d planned. The first step into our future together. I feel my hand instinctively move to my belly, the baby growing inside me—a symbol of hope, of what’s to come.
I push the door to the cabin open and step inside. The warmth envelops me, and I pause for a moment, letting the heat seep into my skin.
Ben is standing by the fireplace, chatting with a couple I don’t recognize. His laughter fills the room, and his easy charm is on full display. I take a moment to study him—his strong build, the way he carries himself with such ease. He looks at home here, surrounded by people. The life of the party.
I force a smile, not wanting to interrupt his conversation. “Hey, Ben,” I call out, my voice softer than I intend.
He looks up, his eyes lighting up when he sees me. “Vi! You made it back in time,” he says, his voice warm, but there’s something off in the way he says it. Almost like he’s surprised I’m here.
“I thought I’d get some fresh air before the fireworks. I wanted to talk to you about something.” I step closer, my heart pounding a little faster than usual. This is it. This is the moment.
The couple smiles at me, their presence suddenly making me feel out of place. Ben notices my discomfort and waves them off. “Why don’t you two grab some drinks? I’ll catch up with you later.”
The couple nods, but I can tell they’re disappointed. Ben’s ability to command attention is something I’ve always admired, though tonight it feels like a barrier.
When they leave, I feel the weight of the silence between us. I take a deep breath and let it out slowly, gathering the courage I’ve needed all day. “Ben, I… I have something to tell you.”
He looks at me, his smile softening. “What’s up? You look a little nervous.”
I try to laugh, but it comes out strained. “I’m pregnant.”
There it is. The words I’ve been holding onto for weeks, waiting for the right moment, the perfect time. I wait for the reaction, for the joy, for that moment where everything shifts.
Instead, Ben blinks, caught off guard, and then, slowly, a wide smile spreads across his face. “Pregnant? Seriously?” He laughs, and I feel a flicker of uncertainty, but I push it down. “That’s incredible, Vi. Wow.”
I watch as he steps forward and hugs me, and for a second, it feels like everything is going to be okay. I close my eyes, letting the moment wash over me.
But as we pull away, I notice it. His eyes flick to the group of people across the room, his smile lingering just a second too long. His attention is divided. I swallow, trying to ignore the unease that creeps into my chest.
“Ben,” I say, my voice tight, “are you really here with me? Or are you more interested in them?” I gesture to the group, hoping he’ll hear the vulnerability in my voice.
Ben’s face falters for a moment, and I see a flicker of guilt. But just as quickly, his mask slips back into place. “Of course, I’m here with you, Vi. I’m just… I’m just enjoying the night, you know? It’s a holiday, and I didn’t think—”
“You didn’t think? Ben, we’ve been talking about this for months. I came here for us, for our future. And you can’t even give me a moment to celebrate?” My voice rises, and I feel the tightness in my throat. I’ve been holding this in for so long, I didn’t realize how much it hurt until I said it out loud.
He steps back, clearly uncomfortable. “It’s not like that, Vi. You know I love you. I just don’t think we need to get too serious about everything right now. We’re just celebrating. It’s a party. A little fun never hurt anyone.”
His words hang in the air, but I can’t help but feel the sting. A little fun. That’s all this is to him. Just fun. The idea of a baby, a future, a family—it feels like it doesn’t matter to him.
I open my mouth, but before I can respond, I hear a laugh from behind me. I turn, and my stomach tightens as I see her—Sophia. The woman he’s been talking to all night. Her laughter is bright and flirtatious, and she’s standing a little too close to Ben for my liking.
Ben catches my eye and smiles. “Vi, this is Sophia. She’s one of the team’s friends. Sophia, this is my wife, Violet.”
Sophia offers me a polite smile, but her eyes linger on Ben with more than just friendliness. I force myself to smile back, but it feels like a knife twisting in my chest. She’s young, confident, and beautiful. Everything I am not, or at least, everything I feel like I’m not in this moment.
“Nice to meet you,” I say, though the words feel hollow as they leave my lips.
Sophia doesn’t seem to notice. She continues to talk to Ben, her voice lilting and playful, and for a moment, it’s like I’m invisible. Ben’s attention is entirely on her, his easy smile directed her way while I stand there, feeling like an outsider in my own marriage.
I take a step back, my fingers trembling slightly as I clutch the edge of my sweater. I try to swallow the lump in my throat, but it’s no use. My heart aches as I watch the scene before me. This isn’t what I had envisioned. This isn’t the man I thought I was married to.
I force myself to speak. “Ben, I think I need some air. I’ll be outside if you want to talk.”
His eyes flick to me for a second, but then, almost as if the words are an afterthought, he nods. “Sure, Vi. I’ll be there in a minute.”
I don’t wait for him to follow. I turn on my heel and leave the room, heading back out into the cold. The fresh air hits me like a slap in the face, but I don’t care. I need space. I need to think.
The night feels different now, colder somehow, even though the fire still burns brightly inside the cabin. I wrap my arms around myself as I walk toward the small porch, hoping that the chill in the air will numb the ache in my chest. I’m not sure where I’m going or what I’m hoping for, but I need to be away from him for a little while.
A moment later, the door to the cabin opens behind me. I don’t turn around, knowing who it is without having to look. Ben’s footsteps are slow, hesitant. He’s not in a hurry to come after me. He knows. He knows I’m hurt.
“Violet,” he says, his voice softer now. “I didn’t mean for you to feel like that. You know I love you. I just—”
“Just what, Ben?” I spin around to face him. “Just what?” My voice cracks, and I fight to keep my composure. “You say you love me, but you can’t even be bothered to put down your drink for five minutes. You’re flirting with her right in front of me, and I’m supposed to just let it go?”
His face falls. “Violet, it’s not like that. You’re overreacting.”
“Am I? Am I really?” I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Ben, I came here to share something important with you. Something that could change our lives forever. And instead of being happy, instead of celebrating with me, you’re over there, laughing with her. I’m not going to be that woman, Ben. I deserve more than this.”
