Chapter Nine
Billy Jo knew she was pacing in circles, so she stopped. Mark appeared far too calm as he stood and stared down at the phone he’d just settled back in the cradle. He leaned with both hands on his desk and then walked around her, his hand on her arm. She couldn’t shake the feeling that a secret was being taken to the grave.
Mark pulled open the door and strode out of the office. “Elisha, I just got off the phone with Link Stone’s wife. She said he’s dead. I need you to call San Antonio and find out if this is true, and if it is, I want to know what happened.”
The young deputy sitting at Carmen’s old desk nodded and picked up the phone immediately, and Mark walked back into his office and dragged his hand over his face.
