Chapter 18: The Rumor

The next day, the university campus was busy as usual. Students walked across the courtyard, talking about their classes, upcoming exams, and weekend plans.
Amara was on her way to the library when she noticed two girls from her literature class standing near the hallway lockers.
They were talking quietly, but one name caught Amara’s attention.
“Daniel.”
Amara slowed her steps without meaning to.
One of the girls, Sarah, shook her head as she spoke.
“I heard they used to be really close,” she said.
The other girl looked surprised.
“Really? I thought they were just friends.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“No, it was more than that. Some people even thought they were going to start dating before everything went wrong.”
Amara felt her heart sink slightly.
She knew they were talking about Daniel and Emily.
The second girl asked, “What happened between them?”
Sarah shrugged.
“I don’t know the full story, but I heard Emily was really upset when they stopped talking.”
Amara quickly walked past them before they could notice her listening.
But their words stayed in her mind.
They were really close…
Emily was really upset…
Amara tried to tell herself that rumors on campus were often exaggerated. People liked to create stories about others even when they didn’t know the truth.
Still, the conversation made her uneasy.
Later that afternoon, Amara sat on a bench outside the campus garden.
She watched the leaves move gently in the breeze while she thought about everything that had happened recently.
Just then, Daniel appeared on the path.
“Hey,” he said as he approached her.
Amara looked up and forced a small smile.
“Hi.”
Daniel noticed her quiet expression.
“You seem thoughtful today,” he said as he sat beside her.
Amara hesitated.
“I heard something earlier,” she admitted.
Daniel looked curious.
“What was it?”
She took a small breath.
“Some students were talking about you and Emily.”
Daniel’s expression immediately became serious.
“What did they say?”
Amara looked down at her hands.
“They said you two were closer than you told me.”
Daniel sighed quietly.
“People love rumors,” he said.
“But is it true?” Amara asked softly.
Daniel didn’t answer right away.
After a moment, he spoke.
“Yes… we were close.”
Amara felt the small doubt inside her grow stronger.
“But that was a long time ago,” Daniel continued. “And it doesn’t change how I feel about you now.”
Amara looked at him.
She wanted to believe him.
But the more she heard about his past, the more complicated everything seemed.
For the first time since they had met, she began to wonder if their growing relationship might face more challenges than she expected.
And she couldn’t help asking herself one difficult question.
