Chapter 17: A Quiet Distance

444 Words
The following days felt strangely different for Amara. Even though she and Daniel still spoke and saw each other on campus, something had changed. The easy laughter and long conversations they once shared now felt a little more careful. Amara didn’t mean for it to happen, but Emily’s sudden appearance at the café had left questions in her mind. One afternoon, Amara sat alone in the university library. A book lay open in front of her, but she had read the same page three times without understanding a single word. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Daniel. Maybe I’m overthinking everything, she told herself. Just then, a familiar voice spoke beside her. “Mind if I sit here?” Amara looked up. Daniel stood there, holding a notebook in his hand. She gave a small smile. “Of course.” He sat down across from her. For a few minutes, they both pretended to read, but the silence between them felt heavier than usual. Finally, Daniel closed his notebook. “Amara… are you upset with me?” he asked gently. She looked surprised. “No,” she said quickly. Daniel studied her expression. “Then why do I feel like you’ve been avoiding me?” Amara hesitated. “I’m not avoiding you,” she said softly. “I’ve just been busy.” Daniel leaned back slightly. “You used to tell me when something was bothering you.” Amara looked down at her book. “I’m just trying to understand things,” she admitted. “Understand what?” She sighed quietly. “Your past with Emily.” Daniel rubbed the back of his neck. “I already told you everything important.” “I know,” Amara said. “But the way she spoke to you… it felt like there was more to the story.” Daniel didn’t answer immediately. After a moment, he said, “Maybe there is more. But it’s not something that matters anymore.” Amara nodded slowly. “I hope so.” Daniel looked at her seriously. “Amara, do you trust me?” The question made her pause. She thought about all the moments they had shared—the library, the lake, the festival, the quiet walks together. “Yes,” she said. Daniel seemed relieved. “Then please don’t let the past ruin what we’re building now.” Amara looked at him and gave a small smile. “I’ll try.” For a moment, the tension between them softened. But deep inside, both of them knew something important. Trust was fragile. And if they wanted their relationship to grow stronger, they would need to protect it carefully. 💔📖
