Chapter 16: Doubts

460 Words
After Emily left the café, the atmosphere between Amara and Daniel felt different. The warm excitement that had filled the room earlier had slowly faded, replaced by a quiet tension. Amara gently stirred her tea, watching the small circles form in the cup. Her mind was full of questions she wasn’t sure how to ask. Daniel noticed her silence. “I’m sorry about that,” he said quietly. Amara looked up. “You don’t have to apologize,” she replied. “You didn’t know she would come here.” Daniel nodded, but he still seemed troubled. “I should have told you about her before,” he admitted. Amara tilted her head slightly. “Told me what?” Daniel took a deep breath. “Emily and I were very close during our first year at the university,” he explained. “We spent a lot of time together, and people thought we were dating.” “Were you?” Amara asked gently. Daniel shook his head slowly. “No… not officially. But we did care about each other.” Amara listened carefully. “So what happened?” Daniel looked out the café window for a moment before answering. “We had different goals,” he said. “She wanted to move to another city after graduation, and I wanted to stay here and focus on my designs.” He paused. “We started arguing more and more. Eventually, we stopped talking.” Amara nodded slowly, trying to understand. “Did you ever fix things between you two?” she asked. Daniel shook his head. “No. That was the last real conversation we had.” Amara remained quiet for a moment. Even though Daniel’s explanation sounded simple, something about Emily’s reaction earlier still made her uneasy. Daniel leaned forward slightly. “Amara, I want you to know something,” he said seriously. She looked at him. “What?” “That part of my life is over,” he said. “What matters to me now… is what’s happening between us.” Amara felt a small warmth in her chest when she heard those words. But at the same time, the doubts in her mind hadn’t completely disappeared. She gave him a gentle smile. “I believe you.” Daniel looked relieved. “Thank you.” After finishing their drinks, they walked out of the café together. The evening air was cool as they headed back toward campus. Although they were walking side by side, Amara could still feel a small distance between them. She knew it might take time to completely understand Daniel’s past. But one thing was clear. Their relationship had just faced its first real challenge. And how they handled it could determine what happened next. 💕📖
