For a moment, the table was silent.
Amara looked from Daniel to the girl standing beside them. The girl had long brown hair and a confident expression, but her eyes were focused completely on Daniel.
“You disappeared without saying goodbye,” the girl said to him.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn’t like that, Emily,” he replied quietly.
Amara sat still, unsure whether she should speak or simply listen.
Emily finally noticed her.
“Oh,” she said, looking at Amara. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were with someone.”
Amara gave a polite smile.
“It’s okay.”
Emily crossed her arms slightly and looked back at Daniel.
“So… are you going to introduce me?” she asked.
Daniel cleared his throat.
“Emily, this is Amara. Amara, this is Emily… we used to be classmates in our first year.”
Amara nodded politely.
“Nice to meet you.”
Emily smiled, but something about the smile seemed forced.
“Nice to meet you too.”
There was another small silence.
Then Emily spoke again.
“I didn’t know you were seeing someone now, Daniel.”
Daniel quickly replied, “It’s not exactly like that.”
Amara felt a strange feeling in her chest when he said that.
Not exactly like that?
Emily noticed the tension and gave a small laugh.
“Well, I should let you two continue your date,” she said.
She looked at Daniel one more time.
“It was… interesting seeing you again.”
Then she turned and walked out of the café.
The door closed behind her.
For a few seconds, neither Amara nor Daniel spoke.
The relaxed and happy atmosphere they had earlier was suddenly gone.
Amara looked down at her tea.
“Was she your girlfriend?” she asked softly.
Daniel shook his head quickly.
“No. Not exactly.”
Amara looked up at him.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel sighed.
“We were close during our first year,” he explained. “But things became complicated, and we stopped talking.”
Amara listened carefully.
“Complicated how?”
Daniel hesitated, as if he wasn’t sure how much to say.
“It’s a long story,” he said quietly.
Amara nodded slowly.
“I see.”
Even though Daniel had answered her question, a small feeling of doubt remained in her mind.
She didn’t know why, but Emily’s sudden appearance had changed the mood completely.
Daniel noticed her expression.
“Amara,” he said gently, “you don’t have to worry about that. The past is the past.”
Amara tried to smile.
“I understand.”
But deep inside, she couldn’t help wondering if the past was really that simple.
Sometimes old stories had a way of returning when you least expected them.
And something told her that this might not be the last time she heard about Emily. 💔📖
