Chapter 1: The Unexpected Meeting

530 Words
The morning sun shone gently over the quiet university campus. Students walked across the wide pathways, some laughing with friends while others hurried to their classes. The soft sound of birds singing could be heard from the tall trees that surrounded the campus buildings. Amara Mensah walked slowly along the stone path that led to the university library. She held two books close to her chest and looked thoughtful, as if she was lost in her own world. Amara loved quiet places. While many students preferred crowded cafés or busy dormitories, she preferred the calm silence of the library. Books had always been her safe place. Through them, she could travel to different worlds without leaving her seat. As she approached the large wooden doors of the library, she took a deep breath and pushed them open. Inside, the library was peaceful. Rows of bookshelves stretched across the room, filled with books of every kind. A few students sat quietly at tables reading or typing on their laptops. Amara smiled softly. This was her favorite place on campus. She walked between the shelves, searching for a book her professor had recommended for her literature class. Her fingers moved gently across the spines of the books as she read their titles. Finally, she found the section she needed. But just as she reached out to take a book from the shelf, someone else reached for the same book at the exact same moment. Their hands touched. Amara quickly pulled her hand back in surprise. “Oh—I’m sorry,” she said softly. The young man standing in front of her shook his head. “No, it’s okay. I should apologize too.” Amara looked up for the first time. The young man was tall, with short black hair and calm, thoughtful eyes. He held the book in his hand but looked slightly embarrassed. For a moment, neither of them spoke. “I think you saw it first,” he said finally, holding the book out to her. Amara shook her head. “It’s fine. You can take it.” He smiled faintly. “Are you sure?” “Yes,” she replied with a small smile. He looked at the book and then back at her. “Well… maybe we can share it,” he suggested. “I only need a few chapters for my assignment.” Amara hesitated for a moment but then nodded. “Okay.” They moved to a nearby table and sat down across from each other. For a while, the only sound between them was the quiet turning of pages. But every now and then, Amara felt his eyes glance up from the book. Finally, he closed the book gently and looked at her. “I’m Daniel,” he said. Amara looked up and met his gaze. “Amara.” For a moment, something strange passed between them—something neither of them could explain. Outside the library windows, the sunlight grew brighter, and students continued their busy day without knowing that inside the quiet library, two strangers had just met for the first time. A meeting that would slowly change both of their lives.
