Grace pov
After we talk with Lisa I drive to the hospital. I check everything I need and I inform Dr. Smith about my off work, he wishes me good luck with Arthur and then I return home to pack my clothes. Steven will pick me up in the morning, and on the way to the airport we will take Lisa.
“Janet?” I say as I walk into the house
“In the kitchen”
“Hi”
“Hi, honey. How was work?”
“Ok. Nothing serious thank God. How about you?”
“Great. Sally is a perfect employer” she says and she gives a plate with the dinner
“I’m happy to hear that”
“Everything good with the hospital about leaving tomorrow?”
“Yes. Dr. Smith is very understanding”
We chat for a while until I eat and then we go to our rooms. I go straight to the shower and when I’m finished I call Steven.
“Hey love”
“Hi, baby. You ready for tomorrow?” I ask
“Yes. My suitcase is ready. You?”
“I finished showering now and I packed my stuff”
“Thank you so much love that you come with me. You don’t know how much I need you with me” Aww he isn’t a cutie?
“You don’t have to thank me, baby. I want to come. I see how much you need someone with you”
“I need you. I don’t think I will want someone else with me”
“I'm here for you baby as I know that if I need something you’ll be there for me”
“I will come running to you if you need anything”
“I know. Rest now. You will need it. You have to do a lot of tests tomorrow”
“I will. Thanks again, baby.”
“I love you. Goodnight baby”
“Goodnight. I love you too Grace. Thanks again” We end the call. And I start packing my stuff. When I finished I got ready for bed.
The next morning I wake up early to get ready. I wear a jean and a blue sweater. My parka and sneakers. Steven texted before he started and after fifteen minutes I was outside.
“Good morning love,” he says as he exits the car to put my suitcase in the back of the car. When he put it in he gives me a long and needy kiss.
“Good morning baby. How are you feeling?”
“Anxious. But I’m good because you are with me” he says and he smiles. I smile back and I caress his cheeks
“Come on. We have to go to the airport”
“Ok. One more kiss?” He says and I kiss him.
“I will text Lisa. How long is it until her parent's house?” I say
“About fifteen-twenty minutes,” he says and I type the message. And push sends and I give my hand to Steven. He kisses it and I put on some music. Country music is his favorite, but I must say that I like it too. Since I came to town I have heard her all the time and I start to like it. We arrive at Lisa’s house and she is outside. Her parents say hello to us and we start at the airport. The flight was quick and with no problems, after the landing, I and Steven went to the hotel to fresh up and then straight to the hospital
“Everything will be ok baby,” I say and the doctors take him for tests.
“Thank you so much for being here,” Lisa says and a man walking beside her
“This is Alan”
“Nice to meet you, Grace”
“Nice to meet you too,” I say and we shake hands
“Don’t worry. From that the doctors tell me Arthur is in good hands and his condition is under control. We have to find a match and the others are easy” They both sigh
“You understand everything they said?”
“I’m a pediatrician, I know the medical terms,” I say with a smile.
“Arthur is sleeping now. When Steven finished do you want to meet him together?”
“That will be great,” I say and I feel welcomed already. Lisa and Alan seem like soulmates like Steven said to me. And is so good that Steven didn’t keep hard feelings for them. And if he was married now to Lisa I would be with him. So everyone is happy. As we waited for Steven I and Lisa went to the cafeteria.
“I am so excited that Steven has found someone. My parents telling that he was on a date but he didn’t continue. I was feeling really bad for leaving him like that. He is an amazing guy”
“I know. I’m lucky”
“How do you find the time? Being a doctor is hard to find time” she asks
“Well. Most nights we sleep together. When I have lunch break he comes and eats something together. I try to get days off when he has his days off. Is hard but we make time” I say with a smile
“Where are you from?”
“From California. I study there and when I finish I find that there need for pediatricians in the town hospital so I go for it”
“Wasn’t hard to move to a different city?” She asks and I frown
“I’m sorry that I ask to like this. And is not my business but I love Steven. Besides what I have done I want him happy”
“Just say what you want Lisa,” I say with a smile
“Do you intend to stay? In a town of Colorado with Steven?”
“I moved here because I wanted I different life than I used to. I like there. My work, the people and to answer your question. I intend to stay, at least as long as Steven wants me” I say and I take a sip from my coffee.
“You thinking marriage and kids?”
“What question is that? And I think that is something that I need to discuss with Steven”
“Of course. I’m sorry. I want him happy and he looks really happy with you” I sigh. If I have to think about marriage. No, before I met Steven. He is a material marriage and kids and he created this feeling for me.
“I never thought marriage,” I say, and her face fall
“Until I met Steven.” She smiles and I continue
“He is made for this kind of life. And I think of that life a lot since I’m with him” She takes a sip
“But I don’t feel comfortable continuing this conversation with you. Is something that it’s about me and Steven”
“Of course. You covered me. I’m not asking anything else about you and Steven.”
We chatted a little until Steven finished the tests. We go to Arthur's room to meet him, Lisa and Alan already told him the truth, he didn’t understand much but he knows that he has two daddies and I’m Daddy Steven's girlfriend. After about an hour the doctor asks to talk to the parents and Steven goes too and I stay with Arthur.
“You are pretty,” he says as he draws
“Thank you. You are very handsome too. You look to your dad a lot”
“What’s your job? Mom is working in a coffee shop and Dad works in a company”
“I know where they work honey. I’m a pediatrician, I work in a hospital like this”
“Cool. I like to be a doctor too”
“Really? What do you like to do?”
“Don’t know. I want to help kids who are sick like me, I want to help people like Grandpa he has problems with his heart.” He sighs and he looks at me
“It’s hard. How did you choose that you want to save kids?” for a five-year-old kid is very smart
“I liked to take care of children more I guess.” I look at him and I caress his cheeks
“Should I tell you a story?”
“I like stories,” he says smiling
“Ok. Nobody knows that story. You will not tell anyone”
“No. It’s a secret”
“Ok” I take a deep breath
“When I was in college before I chose to be a pediatrician. I have decided to be a neurosurgeon.” He looks suprised
“My dad wanted and I didn’t want to make him sad so I have chosen that path. Until one night I was going back to my home after a practice lesson and I saw an accident on the road.” He gasps
“Yeah, it was terrible. I stopped to help and I saw there was a family, the parents, and two little girls.” I still cry when that image comes to my head. Arthur touched my hand. I smile and I continue
“The parents weren’t trapped so they managed to get out but were close to their girlfriend trying to take them out. I call for an ambulance and I try to help them out. With his dad's help, we get out the one girl. She was hurt badly and the other girl that was still inside was unconscious”
“And what happened?”
“After a lot of trying we get her out. She was breathing. The other girl Hanna even though she was hurt was ok so I tried to save Kelly. That’s is their names” I smile a the thought of them. I still communicate with them sometimes times.
“After a lot of tries, I use things that I have learned in lessons,” I say and Arthur nods his head
“She still wasn’t breathing” Arthur looks sad. I still remember I was heartbroken, I wanted so much to save her.
“She was wearing ballerina clothes. I thought that time that she would never dance again. Her parents won’t see her dance again. Her dad comes next to her. I tried again and suddenly she took a deep breath and she opens her eyes”
“Wow. You saved her” I smile
“And that moment when she opens her eyes and looks at me I make a choice. I want to see that smile for the rest of my life. Is not always happen, I know in my life I won’t save all of it, but I try and when it happens is worth all the trying” he smiles
“That’s amazing. I will never make it there. To be in college and I have to choose” he says and his face falls. This kid has so many dreams and he is afraid that he will not love them. I touch his cheeks
“Arthur, I’m not a god but I know one thing. You will be ok. You will go to school and you will become a doctor. Anything you will choose. You are strong and trust me that is enough” I say and he hugs me. I kiss his head and touch my chin on his head
“Arthur? Are you ok baby?” Lisa asks as she walks to us
“Yes, mommy. We just talk” he says and I look, Steven
“You both cry. Everything ok?” Allan asks
“Yeah. Grace tells me why she is the doctor for kids like me” he says smiling
“Oh, why?” Steven asks
“No, I'm not going to say. Is a secret she said to me and I’m not telling the secret“ he says closing his mouth. I laugh and the rest follow. For the night Steven decided to stay with Arthur. Lisa and Allan went to their house to rest and I left last for the hotel. As I walked to the elevator I saw the doctor that is responsible for Arthur and I went to ask him about the tests. When I asked him he didn’t look happy.
“What’s wrong Dr. Holds?” He sighs and looks at the papers. He gives them to me and I start looking at them. My heart stops.
